Look no further for one of the best offroading places in India. Often more challenging than a ride to Leh/Ladakh. In this video, we are on an expedition on our bikes from Manali to Kaza (in the Spiti Valley). In Kaza, we would stay in a monastery (Key Monastery) with the monks to get a taste of the buddhism life.
The ride started from Manali, via Rohtang Pass. Day 1 was not really tough in the beginning but by afternoon, there were so many water streams that we had to cross. That was fun and challenging at the same time. We could go only upto a max of 10kmph, so, by the end of the day we could cover around 100Kms and reach a place called Bathal..
At Bathal, there is a Chacha Chachi Chandra Dhaba, run by an old couple who are very welcoming and can provide you beds, blankets and food. If you stay at Bathal, you should look at the stars at night. Its just mind-blowing. Because of no light pollution from nearby areas, you can see the whole sky filled with dust of stars. The next day we started to Kaza from Bathal.
By the end of the day we reached Kaza. Kaza, looked like it was a town in Tibet. Didn’t feel like India at all. We ate some local food. Thenthuk and Thukpa, which was a first time for me. Then we were on our way to the Key Monastery which is around 14Kms from Kaza. They allowed us to stay there for only Rs.50 per person for a night with food. It was a nice experience since it gave us an insight into the monk’s lives. Then it was time to start back.
The ride back home was very very challenging, because the Classic 500 started to come apart, nut by nut. First the mudguards broke, and started to rub against the tires. We couldn’t even take it out. We tore our jeans, and tied it up to the headlamp. But it kept getting torn every 5Kms because of the friction. At some point of time, we also lost the springs of the side stand, and that started to hit the ground. We had to keep everything tied up till we reached Manali, where we had to roam around to sell our excess petrol before returning the rented bikes.
We shot this video on an iPhone and a OnePlus 3. I had no additional camera equipment at the time. Anybody could do this.. You can too. Nothing is stopping you. In fact you can do even better. Aswin Christo that's why we carry petrol cans. Notice two petrol cans at the back of the bullet. There are no petrol bunks on the way..

Nowhere. From manali to Kaza, there is no fuel bunk. At Kaza only we can refuel.
