    The RAV4 Prime seems to have some type of program to determine how much range you have based on your driving style. When I drive on the freeway or drive stepping on the brakes and gas all the time, I get 41 mile range on a full charge. When I drive 25 mph and gently stop and accelerate (not super slow to be annoying), I get 45 mile range.

    Perhaps you can answer a question that has been bugging me. I have sleep apnea and require a CPAP machine which I run off of the 12V battery. My question revolves around how the 12V battery gets its charge.
    What happens if I plug in, enter room mode and the EV Battery gets to a full charge. Will the 12V battery eventually run down and shut off my CPAP?
    In a similar vein, what if I do not have electricity available, so I use Ready Mode instead, but I start the night with a full EV battery so that the engine does not have to cycle for long enough that the 12v battery gets drained?
    The answers I get to these questions always seem to miss the target. I am beginning to suspect that the only way I can camp in my Rav4 Prime is to use the Ready mode exclusively, and only then if the EV battery is low on charge.

      @jiggawuhhjiggawho Před 2 lety +2

      Technically, not switchable. This is a factory installed option/package so you can’t go to your dealer and ask for it as an upgrade. Having the 6.6 kWh onboard charger (OBC) will only truly benefit you if you plug into a Level 2, 240V wall plug or charging station. If you plug into a standard 120V wall plug it’ll take 12 hrs even with the 6.6 OBC. That’s been my experience in my new 2021 Prime XSE AWD. Note: Don’t use general-use extension cords as they aren’t rated to handle the amps needed to charge your vehicle. They’ll get hot and could melt or catch fire. I’ve seen some that are supposedly rated to handle the amps, but I’d still advise against them all.

      Yeah, drivers seat heat on max and passenger seat on 1/3. Plus, he had the cabin heat on, which would use a heating element and a lot of energy. He did have the AC button on which controls if the compressor runs to dry out the air. So he had the temp turned up and AC button on which blows hot dry air. If he had the temp dialed low and AC on, it would have blown cool dry air. Electric heating element uses a lot of watts and so no wonder having on the heated seats and the cabin heat and the AC compressor, it was using more energy than he was putting in from a tiny 120v circuit.

      What do you need to charge it with 220 v in 2.5 hours ? I have welder outlets already in
      My garage . Can it just plug in with an adapter?

      @@underdog576967 - Look on Amazon for "Level 2 PHEV Charger". They look just like the L1 charger that came with your Prime, except 240 volt. They come in a variety of plug styles: NEMA 10-30 (typical of electric clothes dryer outlets in pre-1990's built homes) and NEMA 14-30 and 14-50 plugs for electric cooking ranges. Your arc welder outlet is probably one of these. Just look at the outlet and determine the type of plug it accepts, then buy an L2 charger that has that plug type. NOTE: If your Rav4 Prime has only the base-model 3.3 kW charger, it will only accept 13 amps of input power (3,300 watts at 240 volts), even on a 240 volt circuit, and still take 4.5 hours to charge, even if the outlet in your garage is capable of delivering 30 or 50 amps.

      He was only using a 120volt circuit; not 240volt. Most 120v circuits are 15 amps max so 120v times 15 amps is 1,800 watts available. Not very much. Think of your household plugs that share one circuit; if you have a 1,500 watt heater and plug in a vacuum cleaner to the same circuit, it will trip. And he had the heating element on which uses a lot of electricity. He did have the AC button on which controls if the compressor runs and dries out the air. So he had the temp turned and AC button on which blows hot dry air. If he had the temp dialed low and AC on, it would have blown cool dry air. Electric heating element uses a lot of watts and so no wonder having on the heat, it was using more energy than he was putting in from a 120v circuit.
      For many, charging overnight from the included 120v plug is all they need especially since the prime will drive normal on the gas motor if you fail to charge fully. Plus it costs the home owner a fair bit to install a dedicated 240v charging station. But many owners find it worth the expense to install the 240v it to reduce charge times from 12 hours to 4 hours.
