My grandfather went hunting with a traditional muzzleloader for over 30 years, cancer took him back in January of this year but I inherited one of his traditional 50 cal hawken rifles, thanksgiving day 2022 I claimed my first buck (6pt) using a .490 round ball with 90 grains of FF and greased patches. Being 19 at the moment I’m sure there’s plenty more great hunting memories ahead and I know pops was with me in spirit when I harvested him. Overall these rifles are perfect for hunting and they’re a ton of fun to shoot.

Thank you Mr. BPMS. This was a great refresher. Took my NJ Muzzle Loader hunting course and qualification about 27 years ago and wanted to make sure I remember everything. This was a better lesson than even the state offered. Remembered never to use cartridge re-loader powder and to mark the loading rod. Thanks for the extra attention to detail.

Hi Mark, love your videos. Everything I know about BP guns is from youtube videos. You and duelist1954 are the best help for me. I have a Tradtions blunderbuss made from kit with my grandson, and a Tradtions Hawkin rifle in 50 cal. I didn't pop the cap on a hunting trip before loading and the gun misfired and deer got away. next cap fired main charge lesson learned the hard way. It is good to have a Christian brother doing these videos. Have Merry Christmas!!!

Thank you for sharing! I black powder rifle practically landed in my hands. My mom found it stashed away from years ago, and she doesn't want it. it was my dad's, he passed away in 1998. I never knew this rifle was in the house while growing up. Fast forward a few decades, it's in my hands as my first time holding a black powder rifle.

just took out a flint Charleville and had a "Flash in my Pan" as I did Not Prick my vent! first shot from oil/grease and storage.
Going out soon with my Springfield riffled musket! Bust A Cap.
"I practice" the loaded gun tradition of a Feather in my Loaded Touch Hole, for safety Loaded reminder, And to Help seal humidity out of my main Charge. But I have chickens and plenty of feathers.

Great catch Mark ! You didn’t give information overload, even though a lot more can be said ! A friend showed me his muzzleloader broken stock and barrel pealed back like a banana ! Asked what powder he used he produced a can of 2400 pistol powder ! 😳 and he lived for another day. Black powder only !

Learned a lot. Yesterday I went out and had a main charge fail to go off. Waited to make sure it wasnt a hang fire. Thanks to your advise I put powder under the nipple and it went off like it should, thank you.

My Father used to put together lots of muzzle loaders from kits.
Mostly cap lock, but a few "Flinters".
We had a ball just trying out each new rifle. Some he sold, others he gifted to family and friends.
It's been years, but I'm about ready to become active in the sport again.

I remember back when I got into muzzleloading when I was 18, there was so little out there to help other than what few books you could find, no internet back then and since where I hunted was still "primitive" which meant patched round ball and open sights, not a lot of people really were into it. Over the years muzzleloading has taken off all the new guns like inlines, but I still shoot old school stuff. The good thing is that if you usually go to a gun shop like around here, you can usually find a nice used percussion rifle for not a lot of money, which is good since most muzzleloading seasons are only a week or two, but there's nothing wrong with shooting them all year long and that's the fun part. Once you do shoot them, you get addicted really quickly. Glad you put this video out, there's always a lot of people looking to get into muzzleloading.
Yes...you are right. Books & magazines were about the only info available "back in the day"....I see percussion guns in pawn shops everywhere. I realize most shooters gets one because they are pretty cheap. They are usually priced from $99.00 to $150.00 around here. That's why this video focuses on these type firearms. I had the same problem back when I began shooting BP. Finding how much powder to use was my first problem and I read where the old timers would put the ball in the palm of their hand then pour powder over it until the ball was covered and this was the load. Well this turned out to work but it varied so much it could be dangerous. Flat palm or cupped palm, you can see where the problem may lay.

I understand all too well what the flying expenses are like. Anything airplane related is VERY expensive. I asked my son to find me some audio cords so we can hear the cockpit recordings on video. As he mentioned Pawn Shops are a good place IF they’ll let you inspect the bore, if not new in-line models aren’t bad expensive with models starting under $170 at your local Walmart. Local gun shops usually have at least a couple used muzzleloaders sitting around collecting dust.

Great video. I got started in muzzleloading around 2011, when I bought a Colt Navy (in .44 cal) from my uncle. I did have to buy all my own supplies, and yes, having to clean them immediately upon getting home is a bit of a hassle, but I do love my blackpowder revolvers. But I've seen some dangerous behaviors involving muzzleloading. Namely, pouring powder directly from the flask into the barrel/chamber. I always pour into my measure first.
I usually spend 5-7 minutes cleaning each gun I use. Smart thinking.....using powder measure ensures safety and correct loads. Thanks for watching.

Not sure when....depends on weather this time of year. Hopefully I can get it under 20 seconds. Looking forward to trying it till I get it under 20 seconds or croak trying ...LOL

Videos and answer all my questions. They are very encouraging. I have noticed a variance from your video. They insist to never ever, ever use anything other than 3f black powder in my percussion cap rifle. No 2f, and never, under any circumstance pyrodex, or " modern" equivalent. As titled for a beginner shooter, I would hope your videos would kind of standardize the basics, just to get everyone off to a safe and enjoyable experience. Thank you.
@@kylethebanjoman3295 I need to put one together regarding the usage of powder in various BP guns.. Basically, only use real black powder in flint guns, no substitutes. The sub powders aren't fast enough ignition wise to make them work. Regarding percussion guns, black powder subs such as pyrodex will work in them. I haven't tried that yet. It does sound like a great lube to use and easy to find.

Pre made military style black powder cartridges are the best way to go. Even field shooting and hunting are aided by this and produce faster 2nd shots. I used to own a Hawken replica but if I ever get back into the sport, I would go with a needle fire in-line design. But with my eyes, as bad as they are, this is a dream at best

Do you have a video on mechanics of a set trigger, the purpose of ,and possibly how to adjust one. I have a tc Hawken that the set trigger seems not to work, it's been that way for many years. Thank you, good video.

Great video by the way maybe one day I'll get one!😊 I do have a question though I was recently watching a film called the last samurai and on a certain part of the film the Japanese troops are all in line but they load their rifles before the samurai attack so my question is would the load fall out if you point the rifle down to the floor? If you mentioned that already in the video I apologize I didn't catch that part.
The load would fall out if the projectile is round and a good size smaller than the barrel diameter. Most shooters of that day would have used grass, tow materials, wasp nest materials or other similar natural materials to stuff down the barrel to prevent that from happening. Thanks for watching.
Great video as always. I really appreciate that you mentioned using ear and eye protection. I see many black powder shooters who neglect to wear eye protection especially shooting flint locks. Eye sight is precious.
Yes, it is....I forgot to ask a shooter last year on a video project to wear glasses & the viewers REALLY hammered me about that mistake. That's when I halted making videos ( for a week or so ) and went through to add a miranda warning to EVERY future video before posting. I now have several eye/ear protection snippets to pick from to add to all projects and will continue to do so. I won't make that mistake again. Thanks for watching.

Well, I would have added 1f in the discussion since you can get it for all guns that are over 60 cal. For shot guns it is handy for shot loads over using 2f powders. Load is a lot simpler. Good over all coverage of the sport for the Flatlander.
This video could have been over an hour long if I added everything I wanted to. I had to cut a lot just to get it down to a manageable watching time. Thanks for watching...

Not sure what you're asking.....what is a liner?? If you're asking about "drilling" out a touch hole..I drilled out the touch holes to 1/16" of an inch for better ignition. Thanks for watching....
@@blackpowdermaniacshooter Hi Mark, the touch hole liner a screw in nut with a tiny hole in the center that is screw into the main touch hole of the rifle I always get at least 5-6 miss fire out of 20 shots and not so instant firing. I have to clean that touch hole liner thoroughly. I am thinking just leave the touch hole liner out "cause the touch hole itself with out the liner is about 1/16. I was just wondering with out the liner would this cause some blow back with some of the main charge pressure exiting through the touch hole without the liner resulting in lost of some main pressure on the main charge? Thanks.
@@dantankunfiveancestorsfist I follow you now. You should keep it at a maximum of 1/16" of an inch whether you use the factory touch hole or the "white liners" like Chambers sells. If you are using a 1/16" liner, you shouldn't have that many misfires. Pick the vent hole after every shot & keep a sharp flint on the gun should help eliminate those problems. Most important thing is...keep on shooting brother.
I just got the building kit
Its a Traditions Kentucky Hawken, its the short one. Percussion cap, 50cal. Its built and finished now. I understand the cap end. Uncapped, how much 3F goes in ? I have the lubed patches and the 50cal balls.
Start out with 50 grains of 3F black powder. Shoot 5 times at a paper target out 50 yards. If it groups to your liking, stick with it. If you wish tighter groups, move up to 60 grains & try again.
You’ll find that sweet spot. When you find it, stick with that combination. Thanks for watching.

Given all the YT censorship (just ask Small Arms Solutions, Hickok45, and even a mostly blackpowder channel Duelist1954 -- or all the reloading channels that were shut down), please create a channel on Odysee.com/LBRY.com. It's a general video platform with lots of gaming content, but they also have big gun channels like BlokeOnTheRange and CandRsenal, and lots of other stuff (news, commentary, history, etc.). It's much smaller, but it is a great backup for the next time YT attacks gun/outdoor channels.

I wish I could give you an honest answer, but, I cannot. I have absolutely no idea of how to load an inline safely or even give you an idea on what powders ( or substitutes ) to try. I've shot inlines a few times, but, had the owners load them for me. I'm primarily a traditional percussion/flintlock shooter with throwing in those inlines occasionally. Since Pyrodex P is supposed to be 3F equivalent what are your thoughts on using it in the same volume amount as you would GOEX or another true BP in 3F for a rifle .50 caliber or less?
Pyrodex burns at a slower rate than real BP does. I notice very little difference between the two while using it in percussion guns although the real BP has a slightly quicker reaction time. I really like that. I believe you will be much happier using real BP and where I live, Pyrodex is around $4.00 higher per pound that real Black Powder. One other reminder....Pyrodex doesn't work very well in flintlock rifles. Its best to use real black powder. Thanks for asking...and watching.
Thompson Center bore butter and barrel cleaner has been very good to me. No more hot water or oil when cleaning and the products are all food grade.
That"s awesome. I've tried all kinds of ways. There are as many ways to clean the guns as there are shooters. I believe as long as you're shooting something & cleaning the gun afterwards, pretty much anything will work.

They flintlocks you work with do they all have the same size flints? My trade gun seems to have the largest at about 1 x 1 .
The Pedersoli KY I have used the 5/8” flint. The trade gun and my GPR uses a 7/8 to 1” flint.
I carry all kinds of spares for these guns.
Can I use two 50 grain pyrodex pellets in my CVA Kentucky percussion rifle? And can I use a 245 gr. power belt bullet? Thank you in advance for your reply.
Pyrodex will work in percussion rifles but not too well in flintlocks. I've never tried the 245 grain bullet in muzzleloader. I'm not sure how well the accuracy would be. Thanks for watching...
So, how safe is it for a lefty to shoot a right handed flintlock? I have done percussion in the past, but always been "gun shy" about a flintlock

I no longer use a powder horn, I have a brass flask with the nipple which is the correct size for the powder charge I wish to use. It is my powder measure and leaves one less loose item in my bag. The flask however goes in my bag unless I create a leather sheath for it.
I have a flask for the revolver I recently picked up. I still enjoying the horn for all my other guns. Thanks for watching...

I would say with prices being how they are the new muzzleloader is likely going to start with an in-line of some sort. They’re less expensive and used ones are virtually worthless thanks to putting from Pyrodex use and improper cleaning.

To put the percussion cap on do you need an accessory? Or can you do it by hand?
You can put them on by hand. When shooting at the range or somewhere there is a table, lots of shooters put them on by hand. When shooting out of the pouch like I usually do, some type of a capping device is easier than fiddling around looking for a cap in your pocket. Thanks for asking.
May I ask something? In Europe soon all (and I mean it) all (!) lead ammo will be banned. Is it possible to shoot steal ball from a muzzle loader? What alternate material could be used to shoot with the muzzle loader instead of lead? Thank You for Your answer.
Steel round balls would play havoc on barrel with rifling in it. I suppose they would work on smoothbore guns. Regarding alternates, what is the government wanting the shooting industry to replace the lead with?
@@blackpowdermaniacshooter Thanks for the answer. Its not our government, it is the European Chemical Agency who will force the EU to ban lead in 5 years. Alternative in modern hunting guns are nickel plated soft steal, and full copper bullets. But absolutely nothing for muzzle loaders. Any ideas? Thanks so much!

Hello, just reading through comments and saw your post. My husband wonders if clay like the Confederates used during the Civil War would work. As they used clay with the 50 cal.
Will #10 caps work with a percussion rifle?
They may work....#10 percussion caps are mostly used in black powder pistols where as #11 and musket percussion caps are mostly used for muzzleloading rifles. You may have to change out the nipple if #10's are all you have.
Question on flintlock. Do you put the flint down on the frizzen when hunting? Seems like leaving it at half cock would be unsafe.
Leaving a flint in half cock is OK...providing the lock & trigger mechanism is working correctly. To find out.... load the gun in a safe place and place the hammer in half cock then pull the trigger. The gun should NOT fire. If it doesn't, it will be safe to leave for hunting. Thanks for asking.

I have two grandsons and one grand daughter into flintlock muzzleloader's. My son is helping too. I am the family gunsmith so I'm outfitting them. They all got a 22 rifle, 20 gauge, modern deer rifle and a flintlock muzzleloader. That will get them started. I got 4 more grandkids yet to outfit. They are too young. Figuring Grandpa is gonna make a family hunting party like we used to have.

We did hit a little dry spell but now my brother, sister and me are all getting grandkids. We are raising them all country. Really it how we was raised. We raised our kids that way now it's time for the next generation.

@@charchitmishra Yes, there are lower calibers. 45 calibers are popular. 36 and even 32 calibers are popular for those wanting to use to hunt small game such as squirrels, rabbits, ground hogs, etc. They are powerful depending on the amount of powder you place in them. Working up a load for best accuracy for those smaller guns is what you would need to do if you purchase one.
I’ve been watching you load for years, , the round ball slides down so easy, like you don’t even have a patch on the ball. What’s the secret to your easy loading?
99% of the time I shoot the .480 round balls instead of the .490's using pillow ticking in my 50 calibers. I occasionally use those .490's if I participated in a shooting match, but, I seldom get involved with those. Thanks for asking and watching...more coming soon.
It's not a practice you want to copy if you want the best performance from your firearm. Lower velocity and accuracy is the result. Doesn't matter with Mark because he flinches with every shot.

When you point out the finer grained powder is used in smaller calibers and the larger granulated powder is used in larger calibers say why.
Good thought. Generally, I use the finer powders in all guns...unless it is very moist outside or high humidity. Then...I'll switch over to the 3F powders. 3F seem to work a little better in those conditions described. Thanks for watching.
