Correction: the 744t only supports 1 CMD 42 at a time due to it's lack of SRC on each AES input - Zábava
This was an awesome video. Great work Nathan and thanks so much!
Great video, thanks
Good bro
Thanks for posting - really interesting. Given Aaton Digital's demise, it seems there there's an even more scarcity of recorders with AES42 support. If digital mics' time has 'arrived', i wonder if we'll see the likes of Zoom offering such facilities?
I hope to see more lower cost devices come to market now that there is clear value for them to make such a device. Sound Devices and some others have already made some new products that have AES42, like the a20-tx. I look forward to seeing more out on the market soon. I know I would be interested in a low cost device so I could use even more CMD 42's on larger recording session where I might use 12-25 mics 😂
@@NathanSmithSound whats aes42?
@@creativegreatsvisuals AES42 is a digital format for audio signals that allows for direct digital connection between microphones and devices. It also allows for the control of internal microphone processing, like gain control and filters. It powers DPP Digital Phantom Power 10-volt power supply.
@@NathanSmithSound what powers dpp 10volt ?thanks so much for the feedback, I appreciate it
@@creativegreatsvisuals If a Device states it supports AES42 then the device should be able to supply DPP, if a device is AES3 then you need something like the Schoeps PSD 2 that can provide the needed DPP 10 volts.
I'd love to know what you work on professionally
I mainly work in games when I'm not recording. The tuff part about games is you can't talk about what your working on until they are close to coming out, so I can't say just yet, but hopefully in the next month I can answer that for you :-) good question
Hi, have you (or anyone reading this) tried the Sonosax m2d2? Also, any further thoughts on how the CMD would perform in extreme environments? Looking to aquire my first toolkit, working freelance with sound for picture, (LET/Sound Recordist/Sound Design/Sound mixing/Boom op/TV, Web mixing) out of Norway. I'm hoping two CMD 42 amps, a double set of Mk 41's, 1x Mk8 and Mk2H, would last me a lifetime. The M2D2 has a multitude of possible uses for me, AES in, Field recording, sound design and TV/Web mixing (headphones and mixcube). But i really need it to be rugged, and the lack of internal recording is also giving me pause : (
I belive it will work with the Sonosax m2d2, here is a link to a video of Sonosax saying it does as well. I have not tested it myself, but I too love the form factor and would love to have one. czcams.com/users/shortsEnVmKERPEho?si=EMvrVaeRzvW0lop-
Here is also a link to the current supported devices (with more to come).

A great video from Simon Hayes going over his all digital film set rig that you might be interested in. czcams.com/video/LE2-ywtlcTM/video.htmlsi=rhQxRw6atq22hUOf
Simon used the CMD 42 in very harsh conditions here is a snippet from his testimonial on Schoeps site
"We were starting a film in Tenerife/Saudi Arabia. We used them in +40 degree heat, in vibrating vehicles for long periods, in the desert during airborne sand storms, in humid sound stages. Not once did they let us down...." schoeps.de/en/products/colette/microphone-amplifiers/cmd-42.html
Hope that helps, I'm not kidding when I say that the CMD 42 is a total game changer. I have 6 and saving up for 4 more 😆for my larger multi mic sessions.
What about word clock? digital to digital needs word clock... 🧐
In my Part 2 video, should be up tomorrow, I go over this in some detail. Let's wait until then since in that video I have some diagrams/pictures that I think might help. Good question though, one of the reasons I wanted to cover Mode 1 and Mode 2 in Part 2.
so, can i use this with the Lectrosonics Hma
I don't belive it has an AES input unfortunately. Here is a link to the current supported devices (with more to come). schoeps.de/fileadmin/user_upload/user_upload/AES_42_interfaces_for_Schoeps_CMD_42_and_SuperCMIT.pdf

@@NathanSmithSound it looks like the cheapest option would do the psd 2u but that converts it into analog which do I really want to. Also the best way if I want to stay with lectrosonics is, I found they do have a digital transmitter that accepts AES it's a DPR-A
how with this cmd 42 work with the mixpre 6 ii? will it be compatible?
It will not work with Mixpre, you need a device with AES inputs (AES is Digital) like a Sound Devices 788
@@NathanSmithSound it’s saying that the deity plug in will have aes42 to be compatible with mics like the Schoeps cmd42 so why will this not work if the deity plug in is connected to a receiver that’s plugged into the mix pre 6ii? Will the digital features inside the Schoeps cmd42 still do their magic ,like no need to do things like gain control on the mic ?
Mixpre is analog input only device
