I was at so many Hello Sailor concerts late 80s. I pushed for our musicians way back then. They were so good!
We went to th dudes , hello sailor, Sharon oneil etc etc I loved thier music and loved they were home grown. Sharon oneil faded away. Why? She had amazing songs . In that era all of our amazing artists should be front and centre with crowded house.
One time ( in band camp) lol, sorry, couldn't resist, but one time I was at the blue hotel at Methven , my ski group knew this was the placet to be for good home grown bands. ..
a ski village accomodation below mt cook and hello sailor played in the bar and they were staying in the pub rooms same as us. That's how home grown they were. rooms.I wasn't going to show them I was star strucķ.... I did the Maori wave when we left next day and they obviously had a gig next night.
We chilled with them in the lounge

I remember the day he passed away......I was having a quiet drink in my local, there were a few of us there all just flying solo minding our own business.........some random dude picked up a guitar and started playing this and the whole bar joined in singing...such a beautiful and memorable moment

I was so sad to hear of his passing. I met him once thru a musician mate during the 5 years I lived in Auckland and also saw him a few times after that going into the bottle store next to the Crown in Pt Chev....talented bloke, but I guess he overdid the partying. 😞

And...Graham Brazier, the main lead singer...OMG what a sexy man! They all were, in their own way, but Graham was an incredibly charismatic frontman, singer, songwriter.
I lived in Mairangi Bay all my high school years after emigrating from England to NZ in 1970 with my Parents. I saw Hello Sailor a few times, they were AMAZING. One of their gigs, at the Poenamo Hotel, as I was dancing a mere 5 metres away form the stage I saw Graham sort of keeping an eye on me. In their break, I was standing just off to stage left, Graham sauntered up to me (the guy didn't just walk, lol)....looked at me in the eyes holding up his cigarette & said "Got a light? I was sooo taken aback, & intimidated so I just froze. I was 17 going on about 13 then, very naive. Graham waited a moment, holding my gaze, then as I froze he just flicked his head to one side, scoffed & tutted then walked off.
I'm 65 now, he was only about 4 or 5 years older than me then, I found out years later, but they all seemed so much older & streetwise. That was one of my life regrets, not speaking with him at that moment... as trivial as it may seem. It was like one of those "sliding doors" moments, whereby if I had made a different decision in that moment, something may have developed further from that introduction. A friendship, a mere kiss, a musical alliance (I became a singer too, later on).
I left Auckland for Sydney a couple of years later, & into 2010 or so I started googling Hello Sailor via the web. I came upon a lengthy text of interview Graham had done late 90s with an Auckland journalist, where he spoke of his family background, literature, his poetry, his political views & more. My heart went out to him! turns out his Parents were from an English town very close to where I was born, & his values, beliefs & tastes were so very aligned with mine. I could totally relate to the man. Years later, I read that he died of a massive heart attack, after getting out of his hospital bed & walking thru the ward. RIP GRAHAM! You were incredibly important as an artist. I hope we meet up in the next life.

I remember being a good boy going to Pt. Chev Baptist Church. This drummer from my school lived over the road and didn't GAF about practising drums regardless of what the church was doing. Ricky Ball was his name.
The Zarks, Larry's Rebels, great times. The Baptists thought dancing was sinful. The Anglicans had dances in their halls. The Catholics are in this song.
