KNIFE SHARPENING TIPS BEGINNERS MUST KNOW 2 | HOW TO MAINTAIN AN ANGLE

  • This is my exact freehand knife sharpening method I use when I'm not filming. Note: In some of my older videos you may see me using a little bit different technique. Thats due to me filming, and trying not to block the camera.
Separating the knife sharpening movements, and using two different joints, or muscle groups to help maintain the blade angle goes a long way.
Some of these things I talk about in this video may seem simple and insignificant, however I believe they are extremely important in getting that hair whittling knife edge. Hope this video help!

The tip of locking in wrist, elbow, and shoulder, then allow the torso to make the movement is a great tip which I am going to try. Having your workspace free of clutter around the stone most people would call common sense. But a good lesson taught. Important to to get into that habbit.

I just watched your video again. You give some good instructions for beginners and even make some good points for those who are experienced. I see quite a few people lift the blade off the stone at the end of a stroke and it will usually change the angle as it’s coming off the stone. You can actually tell that the angle changes from the sound it makes. The sound is something to listen for when sharpening anyway: a change in the sound will happen if you accidentally let your angle rise or fall. With experience you will be able to feel a sudden change in the angle and the sound confirms it.
    Good video.

It's a very simple concept. Bring two pieces of steel together to form a point or apex in the middle. Everything else is personal preference, and what works, or doesn't work for the individual who is doing the sharpening. Thanks for watching and the comment 😀👍

  • @Airik1111bibles
    @Airik1111bibles Před 4 lety +5

Great video man, I've found that sharpening is like playing an instrument you must practice or you will get extremely rusty. Once you work with a certain edge your muscle memory takes over and it becomes second nature. I recently switched from using nothing but scandivex grinds to full flat and saber grinds with micro convex edges and it has been a chore finding that apex . The thing I like about moving to higher fine grits is that you can hear the blade sing ....If it ain't making that curtain smooth ninja sound its not working 😁
You are spot on with locking in and using your waist rotation.... One huge thing I would add is that taking care of your knives makes sharpening almost a non issue, a well maintained knife usually only needs a few passes on a loaded strop to bring it back to hair popping sharpness. Many people literally use their knives to the point of destruction making what could of been a simple task into a much longer stressful one.

This is a great video, really helpful, thank you. Your emphasis on ergonomics and correct anatomical positioning were so on target.
I think it's important to be standing with the counter/work surface equal to the height of your hips. The closer the work surface is to hip height the easier it is to maintain consistent momentum of your hip swing, proper angle of the wrist, and blade pressure on the stone. Also, holding the knife close to and perpendicular to the body, centered between the hips was helpful to me.
I guess it's like learning to drive a car, after a while you don't have think about the mechanics of each movement, you just get in it and drive.
Thanks again for your thoughtful explanation. This was hands down the single best video on the subject I've seen. And, quite frankly the amount of time I've spent watching knife sharping videos is concerning.

I've found that keeping a really firm grip on the handle helps. I think most of us, when we grab something in a "death grip" (a rope, a bar, someone else's wrist or judo jacket), we tense and set everything for optimum strength, and don't change that. If I use a loose grip, I find it easier to move my wrist, letting it change with varying pressures. Also, getting the initial edge contact is maybe a little easier if you watch the water on the stone. Not a puddle, but moist, so when the edge makes contact, it squeezes a bit of water out. And of course the Magic Marker trick (painting the edge).

I've watched many sharpening tutorials. Honestly, the vast majority of which, would send into Noddy land. I mean 30 mins plus per knife and up to 5 stages of 220-10,000 grit media - yeah, right! I'd rather spend the time chopping veggies and eating good food.
Anyway, by accident, I presume, I landed on your tutorials and have to say, for the first time every, I've managed to get my cheapo supermarket and expensive Japanese chef knife really sharp again.
I've been sharpening chisels for years and found that 220 and 400 usually did the trick. I have owned a double sided diamond plate 400/1000, just like the one you demo' in one of your other tutorials - never really used it much for the chisels - but following your guide, along with an old best strop I made years ago, I now have super sharp knives in no time.
Thank you for sharing! Very much obliged.

Hey great videos! I have a quick tip to help solve your weak side strong side problem and everyone will have one because when you change the direction you are sharpening you are looking at the knife from a completely different angle. My solution? Don't switch sides switch hands!! I know it sounds scary doing something with your non dominate hand but after a few times doing it you'll find that your non dominate hand is much easier to use than trying to keep an angle using 2 different surfaces of the knife. I shave my face and head several times a week using a traditional straight razor and I switch hands when I do that too for the exact same reason its a lot easier to move my left hand straight up or down than it is to reach across my face and try to move my right hand at all those funky angles. I literally seen the little light bulb over my head in the mirror when I thought this might work for sharpening too. I am by no means ambidextrous, if I can do it anyone can. Love the videos thanks!

Thanks for these smart and easy tips. Too many of the videos of people "teaching" how to use stones are already good at it, and they go too fast for a beginner without stressing that as a beginner you need to SLOW DOWN, really take your time and think about every single stroke. One off angle stroke can ruin the work of the last 5 good strokes (or something). Like you, I started having better success with the stones when I started locking my arms and slowing way down.

What you did in this video is to reveal the struggle we all have when we try to sharpen a knife. Normally, watching you do it on youtube seems so easy and nice but in reality, for me, for example, it is a constant focus on keeping that angle right. It sometimes happens to me to mess it and lose the angle on the "hard side" and then I have to start it all over again. What I wanted to ask you is how do you sharpen convex edge knives, like the Bark River Aurora ones? Thanks and great job! You've guided me to modify an old long-bladed butcher knife into a small but bushcraft useful one. Still that is my first, I promise to do better with the second.

Some pretty good advice. I have always had the stone in front of me and used my arms as opposed to my torso, although I have caught myself at times using my torso in a back and forth rocking motion. I still prefer to keep the movement in my arms and the stone in front of me, so my blade is moving to and from my body instead of side to side, but whatever works for you, go for it

If it's stupid but works, then it's not stupid. Great video and excellent technique! I sharpen knives all the time and I enjoy others sharing the trade because it's a dwindling trade. I have been around others who buy cheap to mid-range knives, only to throw them away after a year or 2 of use! I hope to see this channel continue to grow!

Thanks my friend! I appreciate you taking the time to watch! It is a dwindling trade. Not many people can do it. Its worth learning though. 👍

Hi Alex, I like your videos because they are not like you are a actor or something. It shows me that you are a real character and not like the other people on CZcams! Thank you for your great videos! I hope we will see more from you.

Seems like consistency for the ordinary Joe, its probably best to get a sharpening device that can also maintain the angle for you. If heard of a Lanski system or something like that. Your technique is great.

Just wanted to say thank you. I have yet to find a better and more concise explanation of how to do this.
