      1:12. A mistake. Chilean librarian here; that is not an English word, "placer" does not come from anything being "placed" somewhere. According to both RAE (Real Academia de la Lengua Española, Royal Academy of the Spanish Language) and USGS (US Geological Survey), Placer is an Americanization of the Catalan word placel, which itself came from the Spanish word plaza, meaning “open space.”

There actually a few cases of the host material that have been found on the missouri. The host rock is called lamproite and some of them evem have little sapphires inbeded in them. The mystery is something we discussed pretty regularly ! Love your content!

      I noticed that there is a peridot source in some of the rocks up by Ming bar on the north side of the Missouri River. I’ve been looking for sources for years. I think I still have your information in my wallet on a business card.Are you over Spokane Bar?
      There’s also some other information on stray diamonds being found in Montana.
      I believe that over the years the rock creek corundum was moved by mudflows from volcanos that blew up and eventually eroded the volcano down to an unrecognizable volcano.
      What’s going to solve this is by running soil samples further east and west of the alluvial deposits

    I bought my wife a Tanzanite ring. It is blue like sapphire but it is exclusive to Mt Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. The mineral profile is very unique and it needs a little heat processing to bring out the blue color.

    • @GrumpyOldFart2
      @GrumpyOldFart2 Před 10 měsíci +5

      They’re a beautiful stone. I bought my sister a Tanzanite pendant necklace because she adores that stone. Only thing I’d say is that they’re not quite BLUE blue like a Sapphire; they veer a little more into the blue-purple range. Pity they haven’t yet found a way to make synthetic Tanzanite.

    • @victoriaeads6126
      @victoriaeads6126 Před 10 měsíci +5

      Tanzanite is a very interesting mineral. It's a form of Zoisite (which is also cool, often found with Ruby corundum crystals) that is Trichroic. They try not to heat treat because it can reduce the trichroism effect. Sapphire is often heat treated, too, natural sapphires are a much lighter color than the deep blue "sapphire color" stones.

    The same weird mystery applies to gold nuggets too, huge gold nuggets are always found in placers and they don’t find the largest nuggets in situ in a vein. So it seems like the gold flakes travel through the placers and somehow attach back together maybe through some ultramafic processes because they usually end up in ultramafic dirt downhill from the hard rock gold mines.

    The geology of the Montana area is absolutely fascinating! Glaciers floating to cause the Columbia Gorge and dump radon all over the west hills of Portland on the rush to the Pacific. Bubbling magma a mile below the surface with hot springs to scald you dead in seconds and colorful, boiling pools that reek of sulfer. Just a glimpse of what lies beneath Montana and Yellowstone. My dad was born in Boulder in 1921. His grandad and uncle had driven horse-drawn buses of tourists around to see the sights of Yellowstone after the park was opened in 1872.
    I have a fascination with opaque stones and have quite a variety in beaded bracelets in all sorts of stones and colors. Perhaps my love for opaque comes from my childhood trip thru Lewis and Clark Caverns in Three Forks, led by the head of the place, my cousin's husband. Seeing the colors inside the mountain impressed me. And I can afford them. I love color!

    The "sapphire" on the watch at 2:25 is referring to the crystal (the transparent cover over the face, traditionally glass or acrylic), while the predominant use of sapphires in watches has been for jewels (the bearings of the gears inside)

    I work in a crystal store, and i want to cry. This is the type of information I need on so many crystals
    Super 7
    Prasiolite
    Moonstones, and all semi-precious feldspars. They say some moonstones are colored by one chemical and other moonstones colored by another chemical (mineral? element?) and yet i see them form together seamlessly. For example, black moonstone and rainbow moonstone. Garnierite also?? Is green moonstone?
    crystal quartz. what is up with the formations known as being from their localities. Herkimer, tibetans, mongolian quartz
    What is up with satin spar selenite vs other selenite
    SO MUCH MORE
    :') So happy to have you here, Hank. I've been watching you and John for 12 years (I was 13)

    Small correction, since this is a fact-based, science show. The country west of Venezuela is spelled Colombia in English. It is the official, accepted way of spelling that country’s name, according to authorities on the language and foreign relations. The Washington Post and the Miami Herald have written articles about this. It’s also in the Webster’s, Oxford, and Cambridge dictionaries, several encyclopediae, and in Federal documents such as “A Guide to the United States’ History of Recognition, Diplomatic, and Consular Relations, by Country, since 1776: Colombia”.
