Episode 88 - AKG C414 or the C3000?

  • The AKG C3000, for me was a mic I forgot? I really don't know why, but losing the mic clamp was probably what relegated it to the back of the mic box. I got an email asking if I could do a comparison with the much more expensive C414, so here it is. Any it will NOT be going to the back of the box any longer. I rather like it!

Quite ironic, the design of the c3000 is theoretically to prevent it falling out of the mount like the 414 - the shock mount is internal and theres a flange on the stem to stop it slipping out of its mount. You might be overlooking the mount somewhere as its not a shock mount, just a simple collar

Indeed - I have a dump bin with the assorted mounts and cradles over the years - perhaps I was imagining something totally different - but I had not picked up on the internal suspension - cheers.

A pal turned me onto the AKG C3000 and after I bought one, I bought another for my twin brother, and another one for me to run stereo. I rather like my C214 on my voice, but I wanted to deploy the C3000 on my acoustic guitar and also see how it handles percussion. The trick is to get the much better quality C3000 from the early '90s that were manufactured in Austria when they had a higher retail price. They were manufactured to a higher spec and some engineers swear by them, saying that they even prefer them to their C414BULS models. The C414EB are just a much higher cut above.
The Chinese mic craze lowered the overall price of LDC mics and AKG had to respond with a re-engineered C3000. They really should have changed the model number altogether because they created a lot of confusion with the quality of the C3000 models over the years with cheaper Chinese made versions that followed. So the delineation is if it is made in Austria. The good news is that the cheaper, lesser-sounding models made in China have depressed the overall resale of the original mic so there are real deals to be found out there.
Another thing that my pal pointed out after I bought another shock mount for my second C3000 is that they do not really need a shock mount. The reason why AKG sold them without a shock mount is that the diaphragms are suspended with a shock mount inside of the mic. They will work with a simple clip just fine. My secondary AKG shock mount was a Chinese knock off and it works great and even tighter than the OEM AKG. Also, I found that the AGK shock mount had no trouble gripping the end even with its tapered end.
This video explains the differences between the different versions of the C3000 rather well.

With headphones on, the 414 is brighter than the C3000. Thanks for the video

In was stuck wondering if it was brighter, or was the 3000 a bit darker? Interesting

Oddly I just discovered the holder now supplied is the same as the C414 uses, the H85? That was not what the mic was supplied with new? Wierd!

It's taken me a day to understand what I think you mean. I'm a bit slow sometimes. The 414 sounds brighter to me than the SM7B. It has a kind of 2-3kHz boost and the C3000 has none of that upper presence and does sound darker than the SM7B@@pauljohnson4590

I always love your videos! I had to jump in and check out this one, because I have a C4000B. Shockingly, on YOUR voice, there was virtually no difference between your two mics there! And you see those C3000 mics for sale all over the place for beans, so grab one when you can! The C4000B is a step up from the C3000 because it's a multipattern mic. It came with the exact same shock mount that you have with your C414 (I bought a SuperLuxe copy of this shock mount to use with my Audio Technica AT4040 mic -- the one that came with it was pathetic). I still use it for occasional background vocals (because my Blue Baby Bottle suits my voice better), but use it a LOT in Omni mode for recording guitar & bass amps and drums. This was the first really NICE studio mic I ever bought. 👍🏽

I was quite surprised too! It's been sitting there for ages, and I never bothered to even consider it - and they are indeed being ignored on ebay and the other common places. If I see one for silly money, I'll absolutely grab another - they'd make a really nice stereo pair. I actually went back to the cables and double checked the purple cable was indeed the C3000. Strange it just passed by!

Firstly, if you "remove" the foam inside the "AKG C3000", the sound will be more “open”. Since the AKG C3000" is intended for "outside the studio" use... So for "inside the studio" use, this headband (foam) is not necessary.
Secondly, the new "AKG C3000" (black one Made in China) is better than the old one (Made in Austria).
    In other words, it's "brighter".
The "AKG C3000" is also "brighter" than "AKG C 214" that costs twice... But still the same "high fidelity" and "detailed" and "warm" as a "True AKG C class professional Mic" ( "C3000"... "C 214" .. "C 414".... ).

@@pauljohnson4590 You're welcome. By the way, the Mic is more suitable for the "male deep voice" as the most C-class AKG Mics. "AKG C3000" and "Neumann TLM 107" are the most "high fidelity" Mics of all times. Even though "AKG C3000" is still "Darker" ... Neumann TLM 107 is a bit better but it still cost 5X more...

    • @arinin77
      @arinin77 Před měsícem +1

These are ("AKG C3000" and "Neumann TLM 107") Mics of the 2010+ that is "The digital recording era" when all "musical effects" are supposed to be added to in the "post".. No need for 6k $ tube mics of the 20th century (Analogue recording era)... So the most important thing is "high fidelity".
