I am not a brass player and have never thought of being one, but fine musicians showing their music never gets stale. And these two, both true masters, can't help entertaining either.

I am an 80 year old, rheumatoid arthritis befallen retired clarinetist and love these classes. I'm sad to no longer be able to play, but thrilled to see these young musicians, so talented and receiving the training we could only have dreamed of in my time. Thank you to everyone who makes these classes possible.

I love all your videos. I'm catching up as I spent most of July in the hospital. As a trombone player for 35 years, your advice is spot-on for ALL brass players... ESPECIALLY when it comes to moving lots of air and producing a sound that the player likes. I'm returning to Big Time Jazz Orchestra tomorrow after weeks of practice attempting to get back up to par after almost dying. I attempted to play a rehearsal immediately after getting out of the hospital and I sounded like s***. All the young players watching should heed the need to move air if they get nothing else out of this video. I know that'll be my #1 challenge tomorrow evening after so much time away...

I learned about straw-breathing from a student of mine who just wasn't getting it about how to breathe-in correctly. After a time of unsuccessful teaching we took a cigarette break (for him) and I was appalled and aghast to watch him suck in the poisonous fumes CORRECTLY. Smokers want to get as much of the smoke in their lungs as they can and keep it down there. They all know how to do this. Although this is causes all sorts of health problems in not as many years later as one might think, it is exactly how you must breathe-in as a flute-player. Using the straw gives - as Mr. Bain says - a little resistance the way a cigarette does. After a fashion with this helpful item (straw) I graduated to breathing-in through my fist, closing the fist to give me a tad more resistance. Before I finish this action I open my hand so that the air then flows in very quickly. Ms. Willis notes that after taking a satisfying breath there's sometimes something stopping you from then breathing out. We don't always have Bob around to blow down (or have a birthday cake, whose candles have to be extinguished all at once - which I can no longer do in one breath - probably from smoking for 60 years - joke). But after breathing-in in the described manner, I say the letters 'fffffffffffffff' (like a vibrato) as loudly and continuously as possible until all my useable air is gone. I do this daily with about 20 second-grade flutists a week which is a lot of fun to do.

At 15:25 I was happy to find the best performance of the horn Trio from Beethoven's Symphony #3. I compare this to the Deutsche Grammophone recordings of Beethoven's symphonies with Herbert von Karajan conducting the Berlin Philharmonic. The trio of Sarah/Andrew/Melia sounds better! I should look for master class recordings for the best sound performing the horn trio. Fantastic where at 16:32
Sarah says with great enthusiasm: "Once more!" I think she wanted to hear how good they sounded together just one more time. :-)
