    In "Off the Rails" I think that the cottoncraft in the ending is the symbol of eternity. That would also explain the environment; heavy machinery and metals are a reminder of the "endless" fabrics, which doesnt due like organic materials does. The metals is a an existentialistic reminder of us all will die, while the metals live on in eternity.

    The story is more than that, also those two kids are siblings, they're not the old lady and her husband, they are their kids, the kids grow up and the daughter gets a girlfriend, her and her girlfriend are the ones that carve their names into the tree, they move away by train to go see the world, then after that is when that company comes and starts destroying the land, I think their son started working for them but then realized what they were doing and tried to stop them which got him fired, then he was forced to move away because he couldn't stand living in all the poison,.. leaving her and her husband, they lived by themselves for a while after that, with no one wanting to come visit, then they get a letter in the mail, their daughter and her girlfriend adopted a child.. then her husband has the heart attack.. leaving her alone.. and it gets her so sad that she tries to distance herself,she tries to forget..this is what gives yarni life, he was brought into existence to recollect the memories and reconnect the bonds that were never meant to break,
    Every time I come back to this game the story makes me cry, it makes me feel so many things

    I played this game for the first time over the weekend. Not gonna lie, but when it finished and I read "Love forms bonds, like strands of yarn. Like yarn, those bonds can be fragile or get all tangled. But when they're kept and cared for, they can bridge any distance." I started crying.
    I did think of a bond of family that sort of became distant with time and towards the end things were mended and they were spending time together again. But I do like your interpretation!

  • @ameliam7292
    @ameliam7292 Před 3 lety +18

    When I played it, I thought they were parents and it look like their kids were growing up. I thought the first few were family trips, the railway one was them letting go of her daughter moving away, and the one with the radiation was their son dying in an accident. Then the later one was her and her husband growing older.
    This makes more sense.

    • @larkspur1517

      i mostly saw it this way too, except i didnt think the son died, i think he was the one that got "the letter" and it was a letter from his sister/the daughter wanting to reunite with her brother after separating herself for all those years after "off the rails." then "winter sun" is the sister visiting her brother with her children, thats why that level has the adults and little kids again

    Thank you OxyCorp for this beautiful and passionate video. During this pandemic crisis my teenager younger son showed me this game. 'Try it, dad, you will like it'. He was absolutely right: I felt immediately in love with it... Unravel is romantic, creative, beautiful, emotional and has an incredible soundtrack. I spent many well spent hours playing it. I have my own interpretation of the story, but it is not important for me if it's the right one or not. What I keep with me are the great emotions I had playing it. For that my great 'thank you' to the game authors... and to that little red yarn toy that allowed me to unravel it.

    I think the ending is the old woman's daughter, who is know a mom, and finds the red yarn and collects it, causing yarny to reform, the girl that we see in the end that picks up Yarny is the granddaughter of the old woman, the reason why they are there is because they went to visit there grandma.

    I work in a nursing home, and my personal take away at the end here is that she passes away. Usually when a couple thats been together for so long when one passes the other isnt too far behind and will pass of a broken heart and often times when near the end they will see and even reach out for loved ones. So through the levels that get progressivly colder up to the last level, the lantern symbolic of life and of course yarney being a manifestation of love and herself, and when yarney unravels at the last bit chasing the half of a heart, possibly symbolic her husband she passes away as i dont remember seeing her again after that scene and also why i think we go from the end winter cold dark level back to a very warm centered memory filled forest and collecting that last half is being reunited in death. As for the little girl she looks too young to be their daughter so maybe granddaughter, though id also make an argument its her younger self

    • @jordanwilliams1447
      @jordanwilliams1447 Před 11 měsíci

      Maybe. I think that was the idea, at least until the granddaughter enters the equation. When we find the old woman at the beginning, she is very upset and hopeless. I think Yarny jumping into the harsh cold and unraveling completely while chasing the yarn heart half is definitely meant to signify that the old woman lost herself to her grief, and that it had consumed her completely…that is, until we see the hand retrieve Yarny. At the very end, we see the granddaughter enter the kitchen and take a cookie from the table. I think the plate of cookies signifies that the old woman is still alive and well, and I think that while grief for the loss of her husband-he better half, her soulmate-weighs heavily on her from time to time, the old woman found her hope in her granddaughter. After the hand picks up an unraveled Yarny from the snow, he wakes up in a bright and warm environment and uses the happy memories to traverse back to the woman’s house. I think that while the old woman will always have those hard memories, she has so many good ones to keep fighting for. The book in the end says something along the lines of “life is always worth it.” While she no longer has her husband, she has the testaments of the life they built together: their children, now grown, and their grandchildren.

    This game is pretty simple, and puzzles are easy once you figure them out but how it well...unravels it just outstanding. From level selection through levels to story about love, loss, passing and changing time, death, broken heart and all metaphors - rust as last level where you find half of broken heart just before cemetery level? Yarnys death? New beginning where you learn that when something ends something new start? Those strong experiences. I played it with my son for over 200 hours (where single complerion is 3~4), and what can i say? One of very few games that made me cry like little boy. Thank you for this video. It sums up very good why this game may be not too complex, but is veeeeeeeery deep.
    PS - i always thought about girl in the end as granddaughter of lady and that most of lady family left city when there was toxic incident but your interpretation make lot more sense, and is even more depressing

    Her husband died from the heart attack. The girl found a girlfriend and they went to travel the world. The boy worked for the chemical company, but when it closed, the boy have to leave to find another job.

    I just finished the game with my friend. I thought of a theory that two of those kids in the background could've possible represented the two yarn characters that you control. Or it seems like a memory from long ago, and somehow these yarn people have reincarnated to help themselves in the past, and help themselves as the yarn characters. If you notice on the girl's shirt, she has one of the yarn characters on them. I believe red with two horns. And the spark that follows you around helps them as they help you. Also the kids and the yarn people both have to run away from something bad, that contains evil energy, evil men and evil black and red particles. Again, it's jsut a theory, I don't have much more clues, and I don't know how the kids and the yarn people are fully connected somewhere along the lines, but these were possible clues that this could be a theory.

    Wow. This is such a different interpretation than mine after playing lol. I like yours quite a bit though. I always love such ambiguous story telling like this game

      Thanks! Would you mind giving me insight on your interpretation? It would be interesting to hear how someone else thought of it.

      @@oxycorp3261 I thought of the love bond being the bond of a family. Or the bond the woman had with her family. Each of the stories were memories of family members, telling how they were separating apart, rather than being all memories of the woman. I'm sure a lot is left open for interpretation, and I'm sure mine could be totally incorrect, but what's the point of ambiguous story telling if people don't come up with different storylines haha

      @@nedfo72 That actually makes a lot of sense when I think about it. I bet if I were to take a deeper look into it, there would be a good deal of pieces that could further fortify this theory. I’ll definitely take it into consideration. It really goes to show the simplicity a story can have while still working so well.

    So I just finished playing this game with my daughters and we loved it! I think this is absolutely an inspired game and an inspired analysis of the story on your part. Well done my friend I absolutely agree this game needs more hype. By the way have you played the sequel? Unraveled two came out in 2018 I believe it was and we are currently playing through it. It puts a different spin on the game by adding a second player who you can lasso onto and swing around the game world with
