  • As Jesus carried His cross to Golgotha, He was met by Simon of Cyrene, who was compelled to bear the cross for Him. Upon arrival at the place called Golgotha, meaning 'the place of a skull,' Jesus was offered vinegar mingled with gall to drink, but He refused. There, they crucified Him, dividing His garments among them by casting lots. Above His head, they placed the written accusation: 'This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.'
Two thieves were crucified alongside Him, one on the right and one on the left. Passersby mocked Him, shaking their heads and saying, 'If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross.' Likewise, the chief priests, scribes, and elders mocked Him, challenging Him to save Himself if He was truly the King of Israel. Even the thieves reviled Him.
From the sixth hour until the ninth hour, darkness fell over the land. At about the ninth hour, Jesus cried out with a loud voice, 'Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?' meaning, 'My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?' Some bystanders thought He was calling for Elias. Soon after, Jesus cried again with a loud voice and yielded up the ghost.
At that moment, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom, the earth quaked, rocks split, and graves were opened. Many bodies of saints who had died were raised to life. The centurion and those with him, who were guarding Jesus, witnessed the earthquake and the events and exclaimed, 'Truly this was the Son of God!'
