Today, Jeff Massey (Steepwater Band) popped by the studio to run through some of Ry's enchanting slide techniques so you can add them to your next jam.

Wonderful job. Lowell George must be featured sometime, in addition to one of the best slide guitar styles, he was a fantastic songwriter and vocalist.
I agree! A feature on Lowell George would be amazing! To make it authentic a socket will be needed for the slide.
Here's another shout for Lowell George, a master slide guitarist whose band Little Feat was the funkiest thing that ever crawled out of a Louisiana swamp! He was also a peerless songwriter and with his band recorded a series of seminal albums in the early 1970s. Sadly Lowell died of a heart attack in 1979 but if you love Ry's music and you have never heard Lowell George/Little Feat then you are in for a treat!

Jeff - I really enjoy your playing, your Reverb instructional material (GREAT!), and your work with The Steepwater Band. This was a terrific lesson. I was first introduced to Ry Cooder when I bought his album Talking Timbuktu, with Ali Farka Toure, back in the mid-1990s! I've tried a bit of slide guitar with a couple of slides that I made from wine bottle necks (like yours)!
Great video. I've listened to Ry a lot and you nail those techniques. It's inspired me to tune my Tele to open D to try the stuff you do on the Guild.

I was lucky ..1979.. Ry Cooder and David Lynley played one show at Festival Hall (now gone ) in Brisbane Australia...myself and Mick Walker landed the job ..opening for freakin' RY COODER AND DAVID LYNLEY...so cool man ..they wiped our arses totally... i really freaked man ..3000 shitfaced fans ...id never fronted a crowd that huge before..we pulled it off ...then watched the show from the front row..with our respective better halves..it just blew my mind... such control and poise ...awsome...my youngest daughter Jedda. Was a month old... on the breast.. she now has an encyclopedic knowledge of music that stuns me on occasion such is the result ,i believe, of that exposure the these two geniuses ...i can still hear Ry singing " You gets no bread with one meatball" how lucky was i man ??? I still play all day most days..busking or any where ..i cant help myself... Thank You Gentlemen ...eternally grateful... John(Lazy John ) Duffy... 😎☠😎 Deadly.

i switched to D'Addario wound third 13-56 and switched out the High E and B string to 14 and 18 (1 up so its 14-18-26w-36-46-56) tuned to open C with medium high action/brass slide, and on my strat with the middle and bridge pickup selected, tone rolled off slightly, you get a really good sound. Also for tone just some low gain, and slap delay that sounds more like a small room reverb works wonders. that with the amps reverb to increase the tail of the roomy delay. and a subtle medium slow tremolo and working the whammy bar ever so slightly sounds so sweet and ry cooder sounding. it may not be your thing, and it wasnt really mine either, but i found from trial and error this sounds best to me. give it a try on an old squier strat or something, you wont be disappointed. ive found too that having your hand resting on the whammy bar when not using it, sortve acts like a ground, in that it quiets the noisy single coils

Great video . Ry is a hero of mine . He doesn’t use a puck playing this kind of stuff - not much at all actually .
And Ry picked it up from Blind Willie Johnson! Back in the 60s when the white Blues Boom happened I learned to look back to the originators of the music, and I think it was Ry who turned me on to the early slide players. At least he was modest enough to attribute them, a lot of people didn’t.

Nice video, but don't forget the other side to Ry's playing: he's also a great vocalist. He combines his guitar with his voice in a masterful and unique way. Nobody else sounds like him. If you want to emulate his style and sound you need to learn how to sing too.

"He's played with Taj Mahal"? They both came up together at The Ash Grove in the LA folk circuit in mid 60s...and formed the Rising Sons...check out their recordings in Wolfgang's Music, where you can download unlimited vintage recordings from that era for $39. No, I'm not affiliated with them...just a collector of recordings from that era.

How do you get that amp tone?
So I've recently taken up slide playing over the past few months and I've noticed that it's pretty easy to fret out when I'm playing with 10 gauges. I was wondering if anyone on here could recommend if I should use a higher gauge or just work on getting the feel down with lighter strings. Thoughts?
I have the same issue & from what I've learned go to at least 12s and maybe tune down a half step to relieve stress on the neck, especially if you get up to 13 gauge or more.
Heavier strings will make it easier, but it's definitely doable with 10s. Personally, I try to work on having a lighter touch and sticking with 10s. If you do more slide playing than conventional fretted playing or have a dedicated slide guitar, though, it might make more sense to up the string gauge.
Hi. Depends a lot on what you are going after. Joey Landreth plays super heavy but he is in Open C. I know a lot of people who use a straight set of 10's with no issues. Maybe a mixed set like Derek Trucks would work best? He uses a 11 and 10 mixed set I believe, That high E string for me is where I go back and forth on a 10 or 11. I actually played this on my son's Jackson shredder guitar with 9's on it. I wouldn't recommend it but it is doable :-) , czcams.com/video/VcNaln2LuxU/video.html
I've for a long time followed the advice of martin simpson, which is to get the usual comfortable set you prefer and swap out the 1st string for a higher gauge only, as the rest of the set will be heavier anyway. This way you can play slide & standard picking easily. I usually put a 12 gauge high E on a set of 10 gauge strings etc..
Also importantly, Ry Cooder played in early Captain Beefheart bands
