  • Last year I dove deep into Notion but then discovered Airtable. Unable to find a video explaining the two, I decided to compare Notion and Airtable. I hope this helps you decide which one to choose.

    Thanks so much for walking us through the differences. I can see that notion is attempting to be a higher functioning Evernote... and Airtable is more focused on database, less on content creation. In the end it really is a matter of what option works best for the person, and then just committing.

    Another thing that I loved in Notion (have been using Airtable for the last few months now) was the ability to embed other sites so I didn't need to have multiple tabs open, I could just have them all surfaced in a Notion dashboard. At least on free Airtable, that's not possible. And the minimalism and muted colors of Notion were so much nicer than the bold Google-ness of Airtable.

    For me , Airtable is Database. Notion is Wiki & SOP sheet. I use both. btw, You can try Airtable + dropbox paper.

    Thanks a lot for this video Jerad. I use Notion throughout the day. Started as a brain dump device, then moved to the PARA method and now fully in using August Bradley's life OS method. I've poked around airtable a tiny bit. I'd LOVE to see the blocks' functionality (e.g. flowchart) in Notion sim to a visual scripting platform. That, and of course an open API for developers and folks like me that like MS automate, zapier, etc. Notion just got a huge funding boost so it'll be interesting to see their development.

    Great comparison. Very helpful. I feel like Notion has much more potential for growth, but there are so many things it can't do currently. Charts, properly embedded and interactive maps, integrations with todoist and other apps etc. etc. Once it has a bigger feature-set, this will be the obvious choice. But right now I'm still very torn.
    Evernote has all the integrations and is super seamless being that it's a mature platform, but isn't really designed for the flexibility and mixed media stuff I'd like to do with notion. You can do a few more things with Onenote, and I like the look of it, but that's very much focused on the Microsoft ecosystem, and doesn't connect with enough other apps either.

    Here's the thing: all those organizers out there (Notion, Clickup, Evernote, etc.) are based on databases. The interface they put on that database will be limited to the developer's ideas of what you want and need. For Airtable, there are no limitations--except for your skill level. For example, when you said Airtable didn't have the sections for notes like Notion, my thought was, Those notes in Notion are just links to a related record in another table, so you can definitely do something like that in Airtable, if it gives you a way to display things how you want. You can have a Notes table in Airtable and relate it to any other record in any of your tables. Does Airtable provide a formatted text field? If so, boom. There ya go! If not, your notes won't be fancy. Even then, you might not be able to link to other records in those notes, which apparently Notion allows.
    I've been considering Clickup recently, but I'm not sure it's going to work out. I'm not currently using Notion or Airtable, but I'm leaning toward giving Airtable a try. It looks to be the most capable and most powerful, but you also have to have a certain skill set that those other apps don't require. You have to think relationally. If you can do that, you can make Airtable do anything.
    ADDED: OK, just got to the part where you discuss the Airtable blocks. SOLD! :D

      I totally agree, I’ve tried tons of different apps and when I new one comes along, I get tempted to try. But, the flexibility of Airtable to create anything you want with a bit of extra work makes me always stop, think, and return to my bases lol

      Insightful comment. Thanks for sharing. Now, 7 months later, what's your opinion? I'm on the exact same path by far using both clickup and notion. Also, how is clickup with the tables?

      I have a feeling it will be 1-2 years before Notion releases and API. They’ve been saying “coming soon” for quite a while.
      I have a feeling Notion will be like Spark (email app) when they said “Android app coming soon”. They told me that when I got an android phone and were still telling me that when I switched back to iPhone.... 2 years later.

    My plan is to use both apps and connect them via notion-automations (while I wait for notion api to open up). I haven't tested it out yet, but if it works that would be a gamechanger for me. So Notion would be my beautiful front end and airtable would be the powerful backend.

    For me, I’m a long haul trucker and I started keeping my trip information in Notion. I’ve switched to Airtable though for one specific reason. In Notion, I have not found how you can reorder the fields of a record on the iPad. I use a 2018 iPad Pro (1T storage) and, at this time, a Brydge keyboard (which will be replaced by the Apple Magic Keyboard in June). For me, that is extremely frustrating. I have to wait to get home (sometimes up to 3 weeks) before I can adjust the fields using my 2020 Mac Mini.

    I liked Notion, though found it slow, and wasn’t even pushing its limits. When Notion lost a large amount of my data that could not be reproduced, I was rather devastated. I thought it may have been my problem, so tried again.
    I opened Notion first thing next morning and literally watched my newly entered data disappear. There one second, gone the next. Reached out to developers and got excuses, no action. Other issues include, as you’ve discovered, once the data is in Notion, the ability to get it out for anything else, if it can be done, would take too much time and effort compared to using alternative solutions. Notion is like having a girlfriend that steals all your furniture while you’re out of town. She may be pretty, but can’t be trusted and the relationship is over. Best regards. Thanks for the video.

    What would suggest as a note-taking app that works on the iPad Pro and a MacBook Pro?
    I just got Goodnotes 5 but I can’t type when I might need to when I am on my Mac. Thanks!

    • @DannyHatcherTech
      @DannyHatcherTech Před 4 lety

      Preface (Notion based channel so biased 😅), if you take notes primarily by typing on a keyboard I would go with Notion as the storage and review aspects of Notion can be really useful, having said that, if you are 'writing' a lot of your notes down on the iPad for capture then I would go for an app that works with what you are going to do with your notes, eg store, review.
      Reduce friction for yourself.
      Capture, Store, Review..... Just my thoughts 😁

    • @jeradhill
      @jeradhill  Před 4 lety

      Yes, but that seems kind of counterintuitive. While I like certain aspects of AirTable that I wish Notion had, I don't think it would make sense to use both. Plus, the only way you can display Airtable data in Notion is to embed it. What use cases can you suggest? Maybe I am missing something.
