Actually the disease moves really slowly, the average time from initial infection to symptoms of AIDS is 10 years and from there anywhere between 9 months to 3 years before AIDS itself kills you, obviously there are exceptions to the rule and once you get symptoms of "full blown AIDS" for want of a better term, progression becomes more and more rapid but to describe HIV/AIDS as a rapid disease is not accurate. Obviously we have good combination therapy now so it's all rather a moot point now anyway.

Yes! Go look at Rock Hudson's 1984 interview, or what Eazy-E looked like in '94 (both a year before they died). Absolutely startling.
