I really understand the "Captain of the Ship" thing. My hubby liked for me to be the captain. He was my best friend and we had a blast together. For five years we went to every RV show, deciding what we were going to buy when he and I retired. I must say we had so much fun doing that. Well, I know now what I'm going to buy. My sweet hubby won't be coming along but he blessed me so much with helping to make the final decision as to what I would be doing. You might say I'm my own captain now. And that's ok. I'm looking forward to my RV adventure, and I've had some really great memories in getting there. This was a great episode. It addressed issues that I would think a lot of people wouldn't think about. Looking forward to next week. Safe travels guys.

You all are so right about pop-up campers! They DESERVE the respect you gave them. Lots of people can “get into” one of them, go camping, and never realize that there may be another solution - because - they do not feel a need for anything else. I, for one, am 100% on their side.

My tip is add an extra day to the itinerary at each stop (we can since we are full time) to discover what else is in this area other than the known tourist things. That day reduces stress by having the time to do nothing or the laundry, or that maintenance issue. We always ask at check in what is around here no one knows about which has lead to some very interesting finds!

Mark and Trish I have enjoyed this. The cherry on top was seeing Charlie. I always have been an adventurist type of a person and at 72 I've never met anyone that has had the drive to do so. So by watching y'all I vicariously am doing what I always wanted to do. I appreciate you both for the opportunity and look forward to next Sunday. Hugs to Charlie and Love y'all.

Start small, start now is the best advice for anything. When we were looking for our first RV my wife was thinking about the extended family and them staying with us. I asked her “are we looking for everyone else or just us?” Once she stopped thinking like that we were able to find a rig that suited our family that wasn’t over our comfort level of towing.

I loved the editing of this video. Not simply two talking heads spitting out advice. Sometimes you were both seated, sometimes action shots like when Trish was getting the mat out of the truck, changing of venues, lots of beauty shots and B-roll. Well produced video and great advice by a couple whose caring is transparent and authentic. Great job! 👍

I was very fortunate in that I married a wonderful woman who was pretty much right in line with my interests. She had actually traveled the country with her parents in a pop-up camper several times. We didn't have the money to do that right away, so we started off doing a combination of hotel and tent camping. Once we were finally in a financial position to buy an RV she was fully on board and we've now been to 42 states with out trailers. Since we started our travel adventures when the older boy was about 8 months old they've never known any different so they're both great road trippers. I have made a compromise of making sure that we aren't out of cellphone/WiFi range for more than a few days, but in the future Starlink should eliminate even that concern =)

All my husband had to do was take me to the airstream store. The moment I sat down in our Airstream I was sold. I'm a homebody and he has wanderlust. So having a traveling home is our compromise (not really a compromise because I love our airstream).

Marc and Trish, You guys are so enjoyable to watch. There are a lot of good RV CZcamsrs out there but what seperates you both from the rest is it feels like I am just sitting there with you and you are having a normal conversation. Your ability to communicate simple ideas (and complex ones as well, this video is a great example) seperates you from the rest. I have never been the type of person to "follow" anyone on CZcams but I find myself looking forward to your new videos each week. Keep up the great work. Maybe one day we will see you out there. Looking forward to the arrival of your cookbook "Small Space, Big Taste".

I loved the comment about the pop up being the unsung hero. We started tent camping when our three boys were very young and money was tight. Decided to finally "upgrade" in 2000, and purchased a new 12' with a slide out dinette. We put more miles on that camper than I can even add up, including surviving a flood at a state park. Our "rig" was the only one still sitting on the site until the water went down. Still own it to this day, but has taken a back seat since 2015. As empty nesters, we decided to go all the way ... and purchased our fifth wheel that my wife fell in love with the first weekend we started looking. We will never be able take a step back after getting used to our rolling condo. The pop up is now going from one son to the other. The first one that "borrowed" it, now owns a 33' tow behind. I guess they fell in love with the experience over all of those years with mom and dad! Enjoy your content, and look forward to the Sunday postings.

For Allison and me, this was likely the best of all the KYD videos we have watched. Many of the things you discussed are things we have been working through as we make decisions about what our RV style will be. This video crystallized a lot of our thought process and a number of times we gave each other that look that says you were talking directly to us like you knew us. Really well done on this video.

this video hit home. Hubby doesn't go with me very often. I tried to find ways for him to enjoy the experience, and after 31 years of marriage and 14 years of T@B camping, I'm getting closer to learning what he enjoys, BUT not always successful. I could go to just about any campground as long as it has electric, and sit in my chair all weekend and watch the clouds and the trees and be perfectly happy. I have discovered for my hubby to go, we have to have a purpose, and it all has to work :) For example, last weekend, the plan was to hang with friends at Stone Mountain, watch college football, and cook copious amounts of food on the grill. Well the football at the campground became a complete bust. Their cable system didn't have any good sport channels, and we spent most of the day trying to get streaming football. We ended up listening to the 2nd game on the Sirius XM. We still cooked copious amounts of food on the grill. So it was a very frustrating weekend. Yet, back in March, we successfully went 3 weeks cross-country and we both had a blast!! So the conversation is not a one and done, it changes over time!!!

I made everything about her needs and wants, also we went with friends. She had mixed feelings about our first trip. We went every year and purchased our first camper in our third year. We upgraded our camper last year and believe it or not we are now full-time RVers and she loves every day

We started in 1978 with a self converted Dodge Maxivan and a tent. I was in the USAF at the time and we had to move to S.D. from Ill. The kids were 9, 6, and 3. What great time. We continued to use the Van and tent for about 3 years venturing into the Black Hills for a weekend. Then we bought a 21' TT and still ventured into the Hills and a 2 week trip up to Crow Agency, Mt. and on over the Yellowstone for a week in the park. We even pulled it back to our home state of Indiana one year. Life changes and I retired, bought a house In Rapid City so the camper had to go. Fast forward to 2000 after a move back to Indiana in 1987, we bought another TT, but there was only two of us as the kids had all flown the coup. In 2005 we upgraded to a 32' 5th wheel and upgraded again to a 36' 5th in 2017 that we still use now. We use the RV mostly as a hotel room now as we have family scattered from northwest Mt. to southeast N.M. We have done one winter snowbird trip to AZ. and will be in Fl. this coming winter for 2 to3 months. There are still place we would like to visit, but age is catching up with us fast.

I was definitely the person in our family that wanted and pushed for the RV. After two years of cajoling she agreed to look at RVs. We had a Pop up TentTrailer about 20 years ago that we loved when the kids were young and did allot of weekend getaways. Love those days so I wanted to go back to RVing instead of Hotel hopping vacations. Now after a year of owning our RV we spent our longest trip to date, 4.5 months and she didn’t want it to end. We were forced to come home because of those annual and semiannual appointments that were already scheduled. Originally we left for a 6 week trip. As we learned about locations and adventures they got added to the itinerary.

The light is the recent situation in the van life community this topic is very apropos. While RVs are great, they aren't magic and you're taking everything from your everyday life with you on the road.
If reminds me of the Adam Sandler SNL skit (from his host episode) where he plays a travel agent..."if you're sad where you are, you'll still be the same sad in Italy. We can take you ziplining, but we can't make you say WEEEEEE and mean it"

My wife and I have talked many times over the years about what our RVing expectations are. For us the most fundamental question that has to be answered is, what type of RV do we want (after you answer IF you want to try RVing)? We are both in complete agreement that our answer is a popup, which is usually referred to in the industry as a tent camper. No, they are not for everyone, but we bought our first popup in 1988 and we purchased our fifth popup in January, which we refer to as our retirement camper. It is our first with a hot water heater, shower and cassette toilet. We have always enjoyed the camping feel which the tent gives us. Our travels ordinarily take us no further than our home state of North Carolina, as well as Virginia and South Carolina. Although, when our son was much younger we did take a trip to Georgia and one to Florida (Fort Wilderness at Disney World). Thanks for your videos and sharing your adventures! Safe travels!

Yall are THE BEST. The point about "the answer may not even be RVing" is awesome. We all stand to gain by testing our assumptions. Totally agree with the person spearheading taking the bulk of the responsibility. At the same time, both people can taking responsibility for asking of the spearheader "why?"
Want to go RVing - "why?" Because it'd be fun - "why?" Because I want adventure - "why?" Because I want to experience new things in our marriage ------ or whatever the root happens to be
Ask "why" until you reach the root - then ask "How can we acheive that?" "What are our options?" Every time my wife and I do this exercise, we're continually shocked at how many options we actually have. It's no-joke life changing. Absolutely love KYD and everything yous stand for - sending love from Richmond, VA!

Thank you for the "start where you can, even if it's small" thought. We were saving up for a motorhome when life took a quick turn. My reliable little car finally gave up on me when I hit a deer. I had to split the motorhome funds on a daily driver. Hmmm . . . when I looked at the various options, I realized I could get a good size SUV and a teeny tiny towable. Serenity, our 18 foot hybrid, was welcomed in to the fold. It worked! She let us RV and have fun for two glorious seasons. I'm back to purchasing an older motorhome now, but we would have had to wait so much longer for our travels if I hadn't started small first. Thank you!

I know when we have large adventures such as leaving from NJ, heading to Yellowstone or Glacier, we look up the top 10 things to do in the areas we will stay and we each pick one thing we'd like to do. This way we support each other's desires and get to achieve our personal favorite as well. If your selection is picked by another family member, you get to pick your next favorite choice. This seems to work terrific for us. We talk about the choices and then select. My niece gets to pick when she comes with us too.

No expectations is where happiness lives. Where ever you go just keep the warmth of relationship. Share the moments of life. My Wife and I have always loved RVing because we just get to go and enjoy what ever we see and experience. Sure there is work involved. But that's living no matter at home or camping or RVing. But RVing or camping (same thing) you get to get so much more out of life. JUST DO IT!

Great video and great advice / tools. Marc, I was thinking about the Blue Bird as far as the lack of power. We have a 2003 Country Coach with a 370hp Cummins. Last January taking a trip to Florida, we had no power to go up the smallest hills and lost speed on overpasses. Even trying to merge onto to highway was nerve racking. I was merging in at 35mph and took at least a mile to get to 55mph. I was truly a hazard. When we got back home, we took it to a Cummins shop and found out that the wastegate arm came off of the actuator. This was causing everything to bypass the turbo. Somehow it came disconnected. Anyway, it was a simple fix. Maybe have that looked at on the Blue Bird. Once that was reconnected, we have more then enough power and shouldn’t be a problem going up the mountains.

We purchased a brand new Class A 10 yrs ago. It was hubby's idea. We have done weekend campgrounds in a nearby state, Fort Wilderness, drove from Atlanta to Oregon to visit our oldest son and gone to Family Reunions and stayed on Family lake property for a week in the summer. Now that hubby is retired, I can't get him to commit to a date to book a campground or go to the Grand Canyon for a week or to the Keys for a week or even go back to Oregon to visit our son again. I don't get it. When we have planned a trip, I pan the food, grocery shop, pack up the RV, plan the route and all our stops. He just gets in the RV and drives, sometimes without even asking what the route is. We get home and he is done, I unload and clean up and make sure all the linen and dishes are clean and back in the RV.
We have a beach home. I have done the same with it. Pack the car he drives 6 hrs, I unpack the car and put everything away. I'm just thankful we have clothes, toiletries and things already there that we don't have to pack each trip. I used to cook and have lots of cleaning to do because the house could be closed up 6 weeks or 2 months at a time. Things get dusty, we have wood floors, so there is lots of sweeping, mopping, dish washing, grocery shopping etc! I finally said, I would like to go out for seafood at once during a trip. Longer trips we don't have to eat expensive all the time. There are plenty of small joints to eat at that are good.
I am stumped with the RV. We keep our 2 youngest grandkids almost every day. They have spent 3 weeks at a time with us before they started school and have asked many times about going on an RV trip. I'd love to take them and do things that are educational for them. Hubby has promised them we would take a trip for 2 yrs already. He just drives, walks the dog and watches TV. I'm stumped. HUGS~Donna

I had to accept that I can go on 50-60 days of awesome camping adventures a year where I do everything or have 2-3 super expensive weeks of vacation a year where we go to resorts and then the rest are staycations because we are broke... As long as you go into camping with both eyes open and clear communication, you can make it work.

I was really concerned about asking my hubby about going full time. He has much more RV experience than I have but we both love road trips and traveling so I was hopeful he'd want the same life. When he said yes I didn't really believe him till HE started bring up videos and talking about rigs on his own...then I knew he was committed to the idea as much as I am. 2020 proved to us that we can live in a small space happily and both of us committing to this new dream was the beginning of the adventure! Thanks for the tips guys!

Interesting subject. My wife (of 42 years) has only one word in her vocabulary and that is NO!, for many years I wanted to travel/RV as you would guess the answer is always NO!. Solutions were separate vacations I would seek out work travel since I worked for the Airlines and get my travel in that way or stay at home vacations. Fast forward to when we retired and can dedicate ourselves to travel and finally get that RV and guess what our health started failing so we have a brand new trailer that never got used because of health reasons and had to get rid of it. Learn to compromise, don't be so hard nose in your ways and go out and do things while you are young and healthy.

My husband was absolutely against RVing. I begged and begged. Then I finally got sneeky 😁 a group of us were going to stay with a friend who asked if anyone would be willing to sleep in her RV due to a shortage of rooms. I of course volunteer ourselves. On the way down I inform my husband of the situation 😁🤣 to which he was not happy but a good sport. As soon as we walked into their class C with the television and air conditioning on my husband said "well if this is what you mean my camping, I can do this!"
He loved it so much, I had to drag him out of it to join the group lol. I then dragged him to an RV show and now he is more hooked on it than me. In fact thanks to his bragging about the lifestyle two guys at work has gotten RVs and joined the lifestyle. 😁
Oh and we are on our Third rig since starting in 2016.

I owned a cruise only travel agency and I had many wives that wanted to cruise and their husbands related a ship to the military experience and said, no, no, no. But once they got on a cruise ship it was, where do I sign up for the next one . When perception and reality come together the good experiences win everytime. Thank you for sharing this insightful video.

🤣🤣🤣the poor rafting woman. That was not a good technic at all ever. Great video. I am solo. So, I can go and do what I want, however, I miss someone to talk over plans with. I have to be careful about what I do, because if I get into trouble (fall while hiking) there won't be someone to help me, unless I am on a well trafficked trail.
I made the decision that those moments that are lonely, anxious, etc.....I accept them because it is better than not going. I lived on a sailboat the majority of my adult life, as much as that is where my heart is.....without knowing mechanical things it is tough. In a RV, I can pull over and call for assistance...so here I am. I check out airstreams everywhere I go, hoping to meet you, hopefully someday.😊😊

I think as a couple, communication is key but also a common thought. The couple you presented in the video almost seems to me like " you go by the book or it doesn't work". Whatever happened to fly by the seat of your pants kind of camping trip? Just go and enjoy the journey!

My girlfriend and I are Paramedics. I told her that an RV has no chance of bedbugs and she immediately forgot hotels even existed. On the more logical side, every night I stay in hotel, pays for my RV for an entire month or more and we get to choose the rules.

My wife and I are similar, but we have our differences. She likes to cook in the RV and I like to eat out so we do a mixture of both. My wife is handicapped so when we reach a destination we usually explore the town by car. We both really enjoy this. We both love museum's. We bring her wheelchair and we have a great time. She has always talked about going fulltime, but I have been the hesitant one. Our last trip was our longest. It was a full month. Towards the end she shocked me. She said she was ready to be home. It seems full timing is not for her after all. We are getting set to go to the FMCA Rally in Tucson Arizona in October. For that trip we'll be out for a month or longer so we'll see how this goes. Safe travels.

There is a lot packed into this little video. I started seeing different aspects to life when I got into kyacking. You have white water, river/recreational, sea, sit on tops, inflatables. All have different uses, and different applications. I'm seeing the same with RV's. If you are just going weekend camping a smaller RV is fine. And yet over the road a class A is good, then all areas in-between. You are right just start. Lol someday I'll get out of my tent :-)

We are very seasonal and won't be doing a week long trip this fall because of other travel commitments but we did just go on a date night at a nearby Harvest Host (two wine flights and a charcuterie board for the price of a camp spot was so much better!) When we can't get away, we still use the rig as our 'clubhouse' on weekends - in the backyard! Hope we go full time some day but we have a pool/yard we'd miss too much. We do talk about we want go RVing all the time. Good advise! Another thought is to be able to punt plans if things aren't working out. We took two college-aged sons on a week long trip last fall when their classes were virtual. We had to move things around to accommodate their WIFI needs.

Trish & Marc...we have way too much in common. Agree with all you've said. We did soooo much with 5 children and tents, pop-ups, travel trailers that we could never have done via planes and hotels. After 30+ years of camping/RVing there are no hidden agendas. We are so clear on our communications and expectations that it can be very smooth sailing. And when a surprise hits...yes memories get made.

My wife has a tendency to plan vacations like Clark Griswold....and will pack every moment with some kind of activity. After a whirlwind trip in the Orlando, FL area I was more stressed out and joked about returning to work to relax. So we discussed what is a vacation. I'm not a crowd or an amusement park type of person...so our next trip? Vacation in a cabin in the north woods....with bike rides...and the one after that...we discussed exactly the level of activity and did a week in the Chicago area...with downtime days. So I would say communication is key and be very upfront over what your "ideal" is.

These are things that would help so many people in their marriages and in all their relationships. And it's fantastic to switch things up. Thank you. Have always camped since my parents figured out it was cheaper to camp with 5 people. My husband never camped and actually enjoyed going with my parents. Tenting to pop-up pulled it with a 4 cylinder hatchback to travel trailer and finally to 5th wheel (which was the most pleasant). Had so much fun. Now looking forward to retirement & traveling.

Your video from Sunday was great. Just watching and listening to what we’re committed to as apposed to what we’re attached to is huge. My wife and I are pretty good communicators, and there’s always room for improvement. I’m definitely a hidden agenda guy, and my wife see’s right through me. I like the part about communicating before we take our trip and put out there what we want out of the trip. This goes for anything we’re planning. Thank you for that.
