- I traveled on Japan Airlines JAL B787-8 from Moscow to Tokyo Narita in May 2019. This video shows JAL B787-8 Business and Economy Class details. Despite the flight was great in terms of seating, food and service. There was one terrible design that made me couldn't sleep. Find out in the vlog.
Japan Airlines is the only airline in the world that have 2-4-2 (8 abreast) economy seating on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. The standard economy seating is 3-3-3 (9 abreast)

I was one of the 1st Mechanics at Boeing who built the 1st 787's. I built this one in the video! Yes, Japans MHI and KHI built the wings. And out of all the people/Companies around the world building the 787, Japan did the best! They do quality work!! Brings back memories....

JAL is the best. They serve all pax with the same attitude and standard regardless business or economy! Love it
ANA are just as good.
The advantage of having the entire meal on one tray is you'll know how much of each dish to eat (eat the most delicious and skip the not so good ones). If it's one at a time, the main course may be terrible but you only ate a little of the appetizer, as you thought the next dish would be better :-)
Just flew with JAL for the first time twice last week and their 787 was my favourite of any airline I've been on! I loved the 2-4-2 fit out, and the toilets were so clean and spacious! My one complaint for both flights was also the cabin temperature. Ended up changing from winter clothes to shorts and a T mid flight because I couldn't handle how warm it was.
Food on a tray or course by course? It doesn’t worry me as long as the food is good quality and is served with a smile 😊✈️🥂
I’m so glad you mentioned JAL Economy 2-4-2. I’ve been on the 787 of United, Air Canada, El Al; 3-3-3 is NOT a comfortable ride. 😕

Tihamer Csepregi Actually, the 3-4-3 configuration isn’t as bad as 2-5-2 configuration, which was utilized in DC10/MD11s and some of the earlier B777. Imagine sitting on the middle seat of that 5 seat configuration 😱.

I perfer the 2-4-2 economy configuration to the 3-3-3 economy configuration on long-haul flights. Hence, that’s one reason why I perfer the Airbus A330 to the Boeing 777:)
Also, Japan Airlines seems to be very welcoming and kind to their passengers.

I flew JAL 787 Economy SYD-NRT and return recently, and undoubtedly the best economy flight I have ever experienced. Also at a great price!
All respect to the Japanese companies that truly respects its clients and think outside of the box to have them happy and satisfied!

The length of this video was perfect. Really appreciate when a video is less than 15 minutes. It makes it so easy to sit down and watch from start to finish without skipping around or feeling like I have to dedicate a ton of time to it.
I also think the content is better with a shorter video. No over the top unnecessary BS like in a lot of the longer ones. Really make things much easier to watch.

Well in general CZcams videos with a duration of 14-15 minutes get more views (or likes can't remember which. Maybe both). Assuming that the source that this was from is accurate. Just a little fyi.
I enjoy whatever length of video is published, 10minutes or 45minutes. If it's full of good information and footage it's worth whatever length :)

However, you should consider the average viewer on here who has a job and a million other things to do and can't afford to spend that amount of time on a CZcams video. That's why CZcams isn't a platform for short films. It's a platform for relatively short entertaining videos.
It really doesn't matter how informative it is as people will weigh the time it takes to watch the video versus what they could be doing otherwise. You can see this with podcasts. They are extremely informative, but really freaking long. Thus, clips are made that are short and to the point which get much more views than the actual long form podcast.
It's great that there are people like you that will watch anything no matter the length. However, that does not represent the overwhelming majority of viewers who simply want to watch something for 10-15 minutes max, and move on to do something else. They don't give a like on the video, comment, or give feedback. They just watch or don't watch and that's it.
Great video Sam! Love JAL, they provide one of the best customer experiences and inflight services. Never under why they don't have blinds for B787, make it so shade is dark enough so no lights can come through.

To answer your question about food service, I definitely prefer receiving everything at once. That way I can choose what to start with, what to mix together, etc. Probably easier for the flight attendants, too.

Flew their 787 Dreamliner SAN - NRT. Loved their economy seats, my return flight had an empty seat next to me so I was able to spread pretty far out
Never thought JAL operates its own japanese support team in Moscow. Even a team car has a JAL branding on it.
I think on all cities they fly they have their own basic ground crew. They don't trust Swissport. :)

Awesome video as always. One thing that I've never noticed that clearly was the wing de-flexing immediately after touchdown once the spoilers are open. Impressive how it kills the lift immediately in order to maximize brakes efficiency. Aviation is just mind-blowing.

As a JAL‘s Cabin Loading staff, I can suggest you to ask to Cabin Crew that rubber window shade to completely shut down the sun light through windows. We are loading a few number of rubber window shades on all B787 .
So, please do not hesitate to ask it to our cabin crew. I wish your sleep will be more comfortable on next flight ^_^

I prefer one tray meal for sure. I eat fast and every time I have to sit there waiting for the next course. If they come in one tray, I can finish quickly and fall asleep. And I hate 787 window too. Especially in business/first class. When you lay down the sun shines straight into your eyes.
Could have be prevented by the crews, also that to need to press the button for 20 second I'm other to do it right

@@projectkilo8370 It's a super low-cost airline that packs in as much passenger it can on one plane. Reclining seats would reduce the number of seats. I flew on Frontier Airlines and their seats don't recline. Nothing is free on both airlines except water and the lavatory.
@@projectkilo8370 You sacrifice comfort for a very cheap fare. You can fly from LA to Denver one-way for $36. Other legacy airlines like United, American, Delta would charge double to triple the cost one-way. Basically, you get what you pay for.
Course by course or one tray really shouldn’t matter at this point. No one should lose their safety for just that little bit of luxury feeling

Great vlog, only flown JAL ecy twice, SYD NRT SYD and found it a great experience. The 777 300 had 3 3 3 config and was extremely spacious, the service and meals were superb, can't wait to fly with them again.

best economy class, hands down! you can't beat 2/4/2! make sure you sign up for the JAL mileage bank! (its free! and you might accrue enough miles to get a domestic one way which comes in handy when traveling there!)

I am a B787 fan but the only thing I don’t like about it is the window. Light passes through the window even if you set it to full shade. If’m I am in Sam’s situation, I think I would be hard to take a nap too!
Temperature on almost all night flights are too warm. Flew JAL 777 and it was suffocating..no nozzles even in F. Lufthansa is even worst. Despite all the luxuries and space, if it too hot and no nozzle, it's all for nothing. Stay at a 5* hotel with no AC in the summer, and I'd rather a Motel 8 with air con. CX is the only airline I've flown that consistenly keep it cool, and for that they are my favorite.
ANA has nozzles on 777, keep it cool, and even though JAL beats them in most aspect, I'd have to choose ANA for coolness. I wish more airlines would listen and read sleep science that cooler temps are healthier and promoted better sleep.
Eli I find this issue off in Delta One while flying international. Because the pilot controls the temperature of the different sections of the cabin, I just ask the purser to ask the captain to turn down the air. This request has never been rejected and has always been accommodated. I would not be able to sleep otherwise.
@@jasonray5219 I wish it was that easy. American carriers are often cooler, sometimes cold! So it doesn't surprise me they would honor your request.
I have always asked, and they either say they will, or that they can't. My last flight of LH 7478 from JFK will be my last time on them overnight... Can't do it again. I was in F class and asked 3x and they said they did it, but it was unbearable. And I love LH F, but rather be on DL One if they are cooler (never tried them crossing over)
The flight attendants CAN ontrol it easily, just like home, especially on newer aircraft. Some just don't want to hassle or make someone else upset. It's always the cold people who are more vocal and get it their way. (Unless they are elderly, i find the cold people to be, well arrogant and cold themselves, usually wearing wafer thin clothes, selfish when they can easily put a sweater on)
Worst though, are older planes and where the classes partition. These are reconfigured with more segmentations than originally designed, so one area can be cold, and another hot simply because the airlines are cutting off airflow of the original design.
Either way, its mostly non-american carrier which are almost suffocating at times, and my worst flights have always been eastbound transatlantic night flights, and JAL anywhere.
And again, it usually takes one person complaining to be cold that ruins it for everyone else. Most of the times, these are healthy, young persons!
@@nywaterny I agree with you but being healthy and young has nothing to do with it. It depends where you are from. The level of "cool" for someone who was born and raised in Qatar or Dubai, is very different from the "cool" of someone born and raised in eastern Siberia or Norway.
@@911shan its purely observation on my part. Not scientific. The hot person cannot do anything about it, while the cold one can... That's the biggest difference. And it is healthier too, but I'm only talking comfort here.
Sadly, airlines fail on that many aspects.

They do when they can. I mostly fly ANA and ground crews and counter staff are mostly japanese. Bag handlers are mostly local though. Might be a Japanese thing

Sam, We just flew JAL 787 Dreamliner from Narita to Jakarta, in coach. I must say that it was one of the best coach flight I have experienced. The 2-4-2 layout is very good. For a very long time my favorite aircraft was the B767 because of its 2-3-2 layout but the Dreamliner is almost as good with the 2-4-2. I love to travel but my budget keeps me in coach 95% of the time so I look for B767 first and now B787 the B777 is ok but only if I can get a good seat. Thanks for sharing your experience.

5:29 The duck meat appears overcooked, but the grilled sea bass looks good. The vegetable soup is nothing spectacular. 9:06 The grilled salmon with steamed rice may very well be delicious, but the plating leaves something to be desired -- the large chunk of root vegetable undeservedly steals the show. // I prefer hot food served course by course, so that it does not get cold. // From watching many of his videos, it is quite obvious that Sam enjoys being in the spotlight. By now, he is known to the airline industry and is _de facto_ a part of it. The very fact that Sam almost never voices any constructive criticism for improvements makes me question his independence and impartiality in these flight reviews.
Criticism is a fine art, I have always given fair and constructive reviews but will never give sensational, entirely subjective or over the top comments. It is extremely important that my views and opinions are always reflective of my journey, which showed in the video. I usually chose to fly with top world class airline and these experiences are totally reflective of their good product and service. In this particular video, I have given my view of the 787 window, and the lack of fan nozzle created a warm flight experience.
