You cannot claim someone as wife if you don’t get a marriage license and register your marriage!

Marriage existed before any nation that stands on earth today. You can marry someone, live together. It's just that you wouldn't get any legal benefits of marriage, and the state wouldn't have any knowledge or record about your marriage.
Amish people are technically US citizens, too. But they get married in the church and often do not register. But it doesn't matter because the villagers would recognize their marriage, and they do everything a married couple does, and they don't need the help of the US government anyway.

@emilysummer Hi hi! Do you know of a way to obtain a certified copy of one's marriage certificate plus an apostille?
7 years have passed since our marriage in the Bahamas and we are trying to make it official, using that date, in the USA (we initially gave up trying to get any reply from the registrar after a couple years of emailing and leaving periodic voicemails...).
To request a certificate online, one must be a Bahamian citizen, which neither of us are.
Is our only option to fly to Nassau for X days and try to obtain the certified marriage certificate, then take it to the Foreign Affairs office and try to obtain the apostille?
We were really hoping there would be some sort of remote process, but I cannot find documentation on the matter.... =(

question ! What if you just want to get a marriage liscence. certificate without having the ceremony and reception - like just get married at the court house? its still two steps or can this all be done in one visit?
If you plan to get married at the courthouse, typically you can do this all at once! But again, it can vary based on where you are located.

The marriage license is to be signed by the person that married you, and on the same day, so no, there wouldn't be a way to change this info

This can vary depending on your location! Only a valid driver’s license is required where I live, but some states (if we’re talking about the US) do require a birth certificate (even for US citizens). All requirements should be listed on the government website for your state.

It can vary, but usually within a month.
Can we just get the certificate without a wedding?
You can acquire a certificate without a wedding, yes, but there is a requirement for a witness and an officiant to complete the ceremony (even if just a justice of the peace or court house “ceremony”) to officially sign and file the certificate.
Actually to clarify, you would be acquiring the marriage LICENSE (not certificate) and then the certificate is what you receive once you file the license.
Can a witness be a family member ?
Usually, yes! I haven't encountered a situation where this hasn't been allowed, but always a good idea to double check the laws/policies where you're getting married!
My ex wife and I had a private wedding ceremony. The preacher signed the marriage license and then gave it back to me. I never took the marriage license back to the court house.
