Hi my name is Phil I did 50yrs on the footplate I started at edgeley shed on the 4th of April 1961 in 1962 I was made a fireman at Trafford Park shed i did 8yrs on steam i finished my time out at longsight as a driver Regard Phil.
Thankfully, this era is well past. I remember it as being absolutely filthy. Smuts in the eyes, black collars after an hour outside. Washing drying in the kitchen on a pull-down rack since if it was put outside it came in dirtier than before it was washed. Choking smoke and soot everywhere. But I am still very nostalgic about it all and regret the passing of steam, bit I can't help asking myself, why?
