Exactly
You’re always at the right place, at the right time.
Do not love half lovers
Do not entertain half friends
Do not indulge in works of the half talented
Do not live half a life
and do not die a half death
If you choose silence, then be silent
When you speak, do so until you are finished
Do not silence yourself to say something
And do not speak to be silent
If you accept, then express it bluntly
Do not mask it
If you refuse then be clear about it
for an ambiguous refusal is but a weak acceptance
Do not accept half a solution
Do not believe half truths
Do not dream half a dream
Do not fantasize about half hopes
Half a drink will not quench your thirst
Half a meal will not satiate your hunger
Half the way will get you no where
Half an idea will bear you no results
Your other half is not the one you love
It is you in another time yet in the same space
It is you when you are not
Half a life is a life you didn't live,
A word you have not said
A smile you postponed
A love you have not had
A friendship you did not know
To reach and not arrive
Work and not work
Attend only to be absent
What makes you a stranger to them closest to you
and they strangers to you
The half is a mere moment of inability
but you are able for you are not half a being
You are a whole that exists to live a life
not half a life

@@yourbuddy007 What Khalil Gibran says here is that over the time I learned what not to do from those who displayed bad qualities (intolerance, cruelty, mindless chatter), I learned to do opposite of that and in spite of that because I was unconscious in my learning from them, I forgot to thank them for teaching me how to be (i.e. exactly opposite of them).

@@jubilent07 from my understanding, I think it's saying the other half was never lived. Never known. Forever lost but it's the you that could have been if you had a full life. You can't love what you never had or experienced.
In other words someone you love is your desire of who you want to be, he or she is the things you want or hate to be. Your object of affection is a mirror of who you want ( healthy ) or doesn’t want to be ( codependency). And your other half is not meant to be exactly who you are.

So I just broke up with a friend that I’ve had over 20 years and I couldn’t quite explain why I felt like I needed to end the friendship and kind of downgrade to an associate relationship…and this sums it up perfectly I was a whole friend to her and she was not even a half friend to me let’s say a quarter of a friend so thank you Khalil Gibran for helping me to decipher my feelings.
It's tough.
Im in the exact same position right now as you my friend, i still like here and she claims it’s mutual but she doesn’t reciprocate with her actions. It feels soul-crushing

I’m ashamed to admit I’ve been a half lover in the past and I regret that so much that at times I don’t know if I can live with myself. I’ve recently been going through a period of awakening and realization of my past mistakes and this poem really hit close to home for me.
Edit: I wanted to thank yall for all the positive attention, I've been doing better although it's still really hard a lot of the time. Progress isn't always a straight line and I've fallen off and then gotten back on track several times and I like to think that won't happen again. I feel alone and sad a lot of the time and it's even harder because I know I did this to myself with my narcissism and jealousy, but that's just something I have to deal with at this point. But I'm still young (only 21 atm) I doubt this is the person I'll be for the rest of my life. Thanks for all the encouragement and if anyone else is going through something I know it's hard but we gotta make the most of it.
Late realization is still better than no realization. Try to forgive & promise yourself to be fully present next time.
I have spent 1/2 my life with Men who where 1/2 lovers. I wish I had encountered this poem earlier in life.
I would pour myself, like a fountain, into people who where drains.
Then one day I realized that none of my relationships where reciprocal partnerships but rather my partners would give for gain.
Unbelievably, these types still come my way---all I can do is love myself and God and keep, emotional fence high and avoid pathological loneliness. 🤷🏼♀️
I'm ashamed I've only discovered some of these poems just now( 40)

He left Lebanon during Ottoman persecution of Lebanese Maronites and massive famine that killed his relatives and half the Christian Lebanese population. "In the dew of little things the heart finds its morning and is refreshed.”
-Khalil Gibran
Exactly!
Khalil Gibran pierces the heart in a beautiful way. He enlightens and speaks harsh truth without hurting but making you fall for his very words 😍
That is one of the best descriptions of what reading Gibran feels like and the reason he’s my favorite poet.
These words are meant to sound very wise and there are grains of truth in there, but ultimately it is a very simplistic and even shallow world view. This guy is the poetry equivalent of instagram motivation coaches.
Real life isn't like that, you have your main goals (e.g. family, wealth, success, art), and you often need to make compromises in order to reach them. To put it into his words, sometimes you have to eat half a meal, so you can afford the feast at the weekend.
Not going to lie. Definitely cried listening to this.
So many truths within his words. I needed this today. We must keep marching to our better selfs. We all deserve it. ❤️
This is a great motivational poem for giving 100% to something you love. But it could also easily be interpreted as validation for fanatically minded people. There is also joy in balance and sampling many things, not putting all your energy into your job, hobby or your family. Arguably people who spend a lot of time just sitting quietly and reflecting rather than being 100% productive may also draw a lot of wisdom from that, and an ability to understand others on a deeper level than modern life sometimes allows us space to.
This poem presupposes a highly black and white world, while where life takes place is always the messy middle. Hollywood taught us the hero narrative, and to not be content with the ordinary, whilst it's not in shunning the ordinary that we learn how to live, but in deeply embracing it. The half-talented and the half-loving are what life will always be about. And there's extreme beauty to it if you dare to look it in the eye.
Quite right ! The poem is incantatorily seductive, but, at the end of the day, kitsch.
What's the title of the poem?
Yes, you are right. That is what I thought while reading this powerful text. You wrote the perfect antithesis. Bravo!

You're lucky to have such amazing role models, in Khalil and your mom.
@Smart Idiot Nope he wasn't and if he was it does not matter I have grandparents from across the border. We all lived together the border is man-made by the french colonizers. All are from Bilad al sham so it does not matter.
@Smart Idiot nope. He was Christian Lebanese from Bcharré, a hardcore Maronite Christian town that has resisted Ottoman and Syrian invasions. It's a town full of Christian Lebanese Nationalists.
@Smart Idiot You clearly don't know your history. We where all part of ottoman Syria. Yes Khalil Gibran was from Bcherri his grandfather is a known priest. Marionite infact. To unite Syria and Lebanon was not a radical idea back then. Especially not for us north lebanese. If Gibran was born today he would be given a lebanese citizenship. All families born before 48 are lebanese. Even Armenian or Circassian they under our law are lebanese. So yalla take cred from somone else. I'm sure he would find this debate of yours beyond stupid. It's all Bilad al sham!
@Smart Idiot False. Gibran never endorsed SSNP cuz SSNP was fascist party that drew influence from Nazism.
Tears in my eyes. Powerful words.
Not only chills but also some headeach. This is 1000 iq stuff. I dont understand i scartch my head and now dandruff 🤣
I love and yearn for poetry like this. Clear, everyday words woven into seamless beauty. Nowadays I find no flow, no emotion. Sometimes not even sense. With all the respect writers deserve.
"Do not fantasize about half hopes"..... I needed this
On this day, I needed to hear these words they act as a reminder, a life lesson and a prophecy for the future. How poignant, how honest in a lying world, how kind in a cruel lie and how freeing in a cage of illusion .
Thank you Xxx 🙏

What's your interpretation of that part?
Thank you. Beautiful truth.
They that love beyond the world cannot be separated by it.
William Penn
To reach and not arrive, work and not work, attend only to be absent; what makes you a stranger to them closest to you and they strangers to you... what chilling words every father should ponder over.
