The ending disturbed me as a kid (and I love it for that). Not so much that his parents died, but that he was now all alone (having just been abandoned by the Bandits). My young self could have done with Connery scooping him up and fulfilling his promise from another time to become his father.

48 years old and I still love this movie. When I was a child the ending scared me. As a typical kid, I wished my parents were gone and thought I could take care of myself. This movie ending made me realize I didn’t want to be alone and needed my parents… the thought of being alone didn’t sit well with me.

I didn't love it - I was about 9 when we got it out on video in 1983. I didn't see the comedy at the time - I just thought it was a freaky film - something I'd never ever seen before. SO many scenes take me back to that feeling even today. Og turning into half man half pig, the giant with the boat as his hat, the horse coming out of the wardrobe, the parents blowing up and he's left alone - scarred me for life!!

It wasn’t the parents blowing up that bothered me. I actually cracked up at that. It was that the kid was left alone in the end that bothered me. I was 10 when this movie came out. My dad died when I was 11. I did not like the ending because he was left alone. You did get a sense that he was going to be ok, but every adult failed him. God was distant and uncaring. It was disturbing and sad. However, the movie had a lot of other dark elements along with a lot of laughter. It was the end of the 70’s and beginning of the 80’s. That was the way it was. Really, this is the way my life was, though I do believe God is not the Supreme Being in the movie. My parents did love each other and me, but I identified with that isolation at the end at times. I guess it is part of growing up.
This is still one of my favorite movies of all time. I just realized the Robin Hood scene is probably one reason I mistrust socialism, but also why my sense of humor is warped. Thanks for that, lol.

What I liked about ending is that it seemed that the parents don't pay attention to kid like neglect. One can say that the character was a father figure.

The ending goes far beyond what anyone can muse upon here. I loved this movie, when I saw it at five years old in a theater (mom had no sitter)and the mindset of kids and parents in that period of time coincided with the ending. I also have the box set off the movie(that came with a map prop), plus behind the scenes. Nostalgia niche came close enough. And there was supposed to be a sequel with half of them(three had passed already, vermin, Randall (sad, suicide)and strutter). Fidgit, Wally, and og were set to return, (with a daughter of ogs) but with the death of wall due to damage from aprevious car wreck, the idea was shelved. Anyway, in the case of the ending, the boy(Gillian's words) had become more mature through his travels with the bandits, and in the end didn't need the parents for the rest of life. Now consider yourself in that position. After travelling through all of time, meeting god and the devil....I wouldn't need my parents anymore either. No authority would best with I had just went through.
Oh and BTW, Agamemnon was an example of history repeating itself, alot like pansy and Vincent.

Terry Gilliam nailed it with the ending of a "kid's movie". Was the perfect ending. I saw this film when I was a little child and it was released in the theaters. I absolutely loved this movie. Don't know how Terry Gilliam does it, but this movie spoke perfectly to me at around the same age as the main character Kevin in it. He casted Kevin's role perfect. My dad didn't like the ending at all though. I think it ruffled his feathers a bit. And it turns out Terry knew exactly why all along. 🤣
If you think about it, that wink at the end from Fireman Agamemnon is like Terry winking at you about a joke he just told that went over their heads this time instead of yours. I think it is a rather genius ending myself. I've enjoyed this movie both as a child and later on as an adult.

I was kind of the opposite. As a child, I didn't really understand the ending. As an adult, I think it's genius. Let me explain why. What I don't see anybody else here pointing out is that Time Bandits actually has four endings, the first three of which are predictable fantasy tropes, and then the final ending, which is completely unexpected and actually makes you think. In sequence: 1) The cavalry arrives and saves the day. Hooray! But no, Evil makes a comeback, so we move on to 2) the Deus Ex Machina. God arrives and tidies everything up. In fact, God is *obsessed* with tidying things up. And then 3) Kevin wakes up and it was all a dream. How boring. How predictable. And then 4) WTF just happened? Kevin is ready to grow up. He already has a better understanding of the world than his parents ever will. His parents are morons. He doesn't need them any more. It's a huge slap in the face to pop psychology books that tell you that your destiny is defined by how you were treated by your parents. None of that matters. Your life is in your own hands. Let them go. Anyway, that's my take on it. Hope that makes sense.

I was also disturbed and confused that no one else even noticed, and that Kevin was left all alone, leaving the rest of us to wonder what in the world was going to happen to him now? I understood that his parents were rather bland, but, being a kid, I didn't get that they were actually quite worthless people. They just seemed preoccupied the way all parents seemed to me. As an adult, I love the satire and the indictment of mindless materialism and the loss of wonder, but it was all lost on me as a youth.
