This is actually my favorite song from Midnights. She’s reflecting on herself, her past, how it affected her relationship, and how she overcame her fears and untrustworthiness with the help of her partner. So after the great war she finally she can vow not to fight, because she’s free from her trauma and past.
I admire her for such self reflection, honesty and ability to admit her faults.
    She’s very brave

This song is so emotional to me. I've been with my partner for a long time now and my triggers and past trauma have caused issues we had awful fights because of something I mishandled and was not even a big deal but I felt at the moment so triggered and scared, he has been so patience with me and I admire him for being so thoughtful with me and so loving even during those hard times. It is amazing how talented Taylor is that she can share these experiences and make you feel so connected with the song message.

We had our own Great War a few months ago I know the pain of being in that moment but we have come out on the other side better 🥰 and I’m soo happy that she will alway be with him because she deserves the say his loves and happiness ❤

I really feel that this song is her remembering the Great War past tense and her song Afterglow from Lover is the ‘in the moment’ perspective. Soooo many allusions to afterglow in this song. Also the first line of the chorus in afterglow is like a premature version of antihero.

this gave me the same feeling i get from listening to afterglow. this was really insightful. sucks how trauma changes people and how it hinders them from trusting their partner wholeheartedly and loving them more freely; how the smallest things can be so triggering. i feel her because i'm the same. and this is what i love about taylor's songs-so vulnerable and honest. as somone who's also struggling from her own inner demons and intrusive thoughts, it feels nice to be heard; to be able to understand myself, my own issues and what i'm going through. it makes me realize that i really needed therapy lol. thank you for this analysis.

@@Love-so7rs it must’ve been a hard time in their relationship that she had to let go of the issues from her past and just break out of her old habits and patterns which she’s mentioned in other songs of him calling her on her tricks ( I forget the word she used but it’s like games or something to that affect) he called her out and this relationship is so different than her others. And she was probably like “oh wow someone who sees right through me” woah and kinda reverted inward and had to work through her issues and he stuck by her side despite her probably not treating him all that well (like blaming him for things he didn’t do) because she was working through her past.

“But diesel is desire, you were playin' with fire”. Thanks for explaining this. I definitely think you hit the nail on the head when you said she was threatening to burn them down. I’ve connected this song to the same event in After Glow since I first heard it, and in after glow she says, “I'm the one who burned us down“. I recommend that song if you haven’t heard it. There’s so many parallels it can’t not be about the same event. The ONLY difference is in After Glow she’s still asking for reassurance and in this song she seems to already have it. She’s confidant about their future together now. It’s all so sweet.

i don’t know if you’ve listened to them already, but Peace and Sweet Nothing are two other songs about taylor and joe that are definitely worth listening to and tell you more about their relationship. in Peace she asks him whether she’s enough since she could never give him actual peace because of everything she’s been through (it can also be viewed as having a significant other that has a mental illness) and fans speculate that Sweet Nothing can be seen as joe’s response (especially because he helped co-write the song)

Second this for sure. Peace and Sweet Nothing both are favorites of mine as they both remind me of my relationship with my husband - I have a lot of disabilities and Peace hit me HARD about the guilt I feel about what I can “contribute” to a relationship, what my value is. And then Sweet Nothing was just this reminder that you don’t have to do anything to earn happiness and love and peace, and you’re allowed to not want to have more than just quiet contentment. Just such good pieces of music. Taylor continues to be a lyrical genius first and foremost.

Fun fact: The poppy is the enduring symbol of remembrance of the First World War. It is strongly linked with Armistice Day (11 November), but the poppy's origin as a popular symbol of remembrance lies in the landscapes of the First World War. Poppies were a common sight, especially on the Western Front.

"this relationship has been so deep that it will bring the past thing up to the surface" this kind of reminded me of you drew stars around my scars and now I'm bleeding because to me it signified that the person was really good to her and it reminded her of the time when other people in similar situations weren't good to her and it opened up old wounds. And of course, that hurts but it also allows you to heal

Loved this! It´s such a great song. Equating fighting to war is obvious but she does it so beautifully in this song. The parallels to afterglow are brilliant they really are sister songs. The nature references, violets, poppies, clover, morning glory plants is so folkore/evermore. Clover is a legume that puts nitrates in the soil so other plants can grow. To me the "maybe it was her" line is referencing her ego because of the previous line. A great video, thank you.

    "It turned into something bigger
Somewhere in the haze got a sense I'd been betrayed
Your finger on my hair pin triggers
Hold you down on that icy ground
Looked up at me with honor and truth
Broken and blue, so I called off the troops
That was the night I nearly lost you"
So incredibly open and honest and clever. He did something that set off her internal alarm and she was ready to destroy the relationship until she realized he had good intentions, and did not betray her, and she was reacting to past trauma and had to metaphorically "call off the troops" and stop punishing him for things he didn't do. Really hits home to anyone who has met the partner who takes their shit and loves them anyhow, while also making them realize they don't deserve the reaction they are getting.

Your Taylor reactions are quickly become my favorite! I didn't know that about crimson clover, I was trying (unsuccessfully) to tie it to that song by Tommy James and the Shondelles but your take makes much more sense.

    • @keenanicole23
      @keenanicole23 Před rokem

No, you’re right. Tommy James & The Shondells explained that the mix of “Crimson” and “Clover” explores a love that could develop into some beautiful and moving the motions to keep someone. Lyrically, the story plays out more directly in the song:
Ah, now I don’t hardly know her
But I think I could love her
      Crimson and clover
But since then Crimson & Clover has been used in that same context to reference this very same thing, as well as the process of grief when you have lost someone or think you may be losing a romantic partner. It fits perfectly with this song. Lana Del Ray uses the crimson clover lyrics in one of her songs from years ago as well and she also worked on this album with Taylor. Dessner (who produced the song) is a big fan of Crimson & Clover as well. Jimmy Eat World made the crimson & clover reference in their A Praise Chorus song from 2001’s Bleed American. It has been used in this same context dozen’s and dozen’s of times by many different artists. I love that Taylor used it because there literally could not have been a better fit for this song contextually. But yes, you are right there. You’ve just gotta know a little more about musical history and lyrical history to get this one. It’s not meant to be such a literal reference, as in the actual plant itself.

The way I interpret the line “There’s no morning glory, it was war, it wasn’t fair” is like, she woke up the next morning after they had a big fight and literally one or the other didn’t feel good about “winning” the argument, because it was “war” and bad things were said and like referencing back to knowing the other persons secrets and knowing what to say to really hurt them. So the “win” wasn’t fair because they “played dirty” basically.

This song reminds me of the 2nd verse of Cornelia Street where she talks about when they were "card sharks, playing games, I thought you were leading me on" and she left, but then he "called, showed your hand, I turned around" pointing again to the insecurities she has and the process of learning to trust the person you're with. Lyrical genius.

  • @heidiclement4923
    @heidiclement4923 Před rokem +1

Morning glory is a double-meaning. Coming back from a victorious war, you're given glory, you're the one still standing, you're hailed a hero. But those who fight it know that's it's not glorious, it's not bright and good and noble. It's messy and often dishonorable, and you do what you have to in order to survive. And she did that, it's kept her who she is this long, but it wasn't fair. She didn't come out 'winning,' there was no honor or glory to it. It was war, it was battle, it was survival (emotionally). I love the duality of the images here, the war and the flowers. Also like how flowers and war are juxtaposed, usually they are considered opposites, the flower child vs the warrior, lover vs fighter, and in this, she has to come to terms with being both.

11:25 to complete this thought, I think poppies used to grow a lot on trenches and battlefields during times of war. The "myth" goes as if flowers grew in theses locations specifically to remember the fallen soldiers with the association of their colour to the blood of these men. From this, the connection to the theme of the song becomes obvious :)

He left me. it was 5 years ago and we were 17, so you know, nowhere near being wise, but looking at it now, these lyrics just remind me of that. “telling me to punish you for things you never did, so I justified it” I did it, because I was in pain. Now I have matured (slightly lol) and am in a healthy relationship (4 years going on) and I just cannot imagine putting my partner through what I did in my previous relationship. I think this is why she stayed with Joe, even after things started to turn bad. I think she felt like she owed it to him, since he helped her heal from her demons. But I think he started to feel resentment and apathy towards her at the end of the relationship. She desperately wanted things to work out, after all they had been through. She tried to stay in the prison of the relationship. I hadn't heard this song before the breakup, since I'm a fairly new Swiftie. Only about 6 months or so. It makes me think a little better of Joe, but I still think he led her on and left her to dangle around at the end.

Crimson & clover is referenced a lot in song lyrics since Crimson & Clover was released by Tommy James & The Shondells in the 60’s. It was covered later by Joan Jett in the 80’s, has been referenced by Jimmy Eat World, Lana Del Ray (who worked on this album with TS) and now Taylor. Dessner who produced The Great War is also a big fan of the original song. Crimson Clover is commonly used in lyrical writing to reference the loss of someone you love and going through the stages of grief associated with that. It’s in tons of songs across many genre’s since it was first referenced in the early 60’s in Crimson & Clover and it’s always used in this context, same situation here with The Great War and is very appropriate for this song.

I am so happy for her and honestly her songs when you truly listen, and I always do have always just been just a testament to growing. Whether is was learning love isn't what you thought it was, being excited by new cities or experiences, storytelling, heartbreak, and unresolved trauma, or love being exactly what you hoped for all along. I think her recent albums give me hope because while we may not have had the same circumstance, I feel the same when I listen to songs like these and maybe if she had found love and is healing I can too in my own time.

I always get excited when I get a notification that you've uploaded a new Taylor reaction, and this one didn't disappoint! I love how Taylor used imagery in this song and all the references to flowers and your explanations! I'm excited to see which song you react to next, from Midnights I would love to see Maroon (has another flower reference), Midnight Rain, Anti-Hero, and Dear Reader!
Also, would love to see you react some Paramore songs, especially from After Laughter - specifically Forgiveness, 26, and Tell Me How. They tackle some really interesting topics surrounding depression, relationships, etc. and I think you could give some great analysis!

I woke up with this song in my head and listened to it this morning several times just wondering hmmm. I think “spineless in my tomb of silence” and “took the battle underground” is like, she didn’t speak up when she should have maybe. Like she kept something behind the scenes instead of confronting someone publicly?

I actually think the crimson clover was a reference to the clover in her song Ivy, but now they're covered in blood which is crimson. Clover is a symbol of hope and luck and young love, but her clover is crimson and on a battlefield now.

My knuckles were bruised like violets
Sucker punching walls, cursed you as I sleep-talked
Spineless in my tomb of silence
Tore your banners down, took the battle underground
And maybe it was ego swinging
    Maybe it was her
Flashes of the battle come back to me in a blur
    All that bloodshed, crimson clover
    Uh-huh, sweet dream was over
My hand was the one you reached for
    All throughout the Great War
    Always remember
    Uh-huh, tears on the letter
I vowed not to cry anymore
If we survived the Great War
You drew up some good faith treaties
I drew curtains closed, drank my poison all alone
You said I have to trust more freely
But diesel is desire, you were playin' with fire
And maybe it's the past that's talkin'
    Screamin' from the crypt
Tellin' me to punish you for things you never did
    So I justified it
    All that bloodshed, crimson clover
Uh-huh, the bombs were close and
My hand was the one you reached for
    All throughout the Great War
    Always remember
    Uh-huh, the burning embers
I vowed not to fight anymore
If we survived the Great War
    Uh-huh
    Uh-huh
    It turned into something bigger
Somewhere in the haze, got a sense I'd been betrayed
Your finger on my hair pin triggers
Soldier down on that icy ground
Looked up at me with honor and truth
Broken and blue, so I called off the troops
That was the night I nearly lost you
I really thought I lost you
We can plant a memory garden
Say a solemn prayer, place a poppy in my hair
There's no morning glory, it was war, it wasn't fair
And we will never go back
    To that bloodshed, crimson clover
    Uh-huh, the worst was over
My hand was the one you reached for
    All throughout the Great War
    Always remember
    Uh-huh, we're burned for better
I vowed I would always be yours
'Cause we survived the Great War
    Uh-huh
    Uh-huh
    I would always be yours
'Cause we survived the Great War
    Uh-huh
I vowed I would always be yours

I feel like everyone’s missing the point of “maybe it was her” lyric. I believe Taylor’s referring to herself in that lyric, as just immediately before it she sings, “maybe it was egos swinging” including her own + in much of the song she sings about HER own past essentially sabotaging her mind and perspective of Joe

  • @abigailkgomo8790
    @abigailkgomo8790 Před rokem +3

In my overactive imagination, this song ties with the one that follows it 'Bigger Than the Whole Sky'. If she did in fact have a miscarriage, it makes sense (in my head) that the 'Great War' was one where they went through something so big and scarring and in that mess she more or less took out her grief and pain on him instead of trying to hold onto him and lean on his for support, acknowledging his pain too while he held on and never gave up on her and on their relationship. Again, all in my overactive imagination.

100% I agree with you. I’ve been thinking this all week and you are the first comment I’ve seen over multiple videos that shares this thought!

    • @jbolt6609
      @jbolt6609 Před rokem

The song starts with the immediate grief of the miscarriage and the unfairness of it all, and then Taylor retreating into herself to grieve and having memories of the event. All the while Joe was reaching for her in support and for support, drawing up good faith treaties and reaching for her hand. Then this created greater distance from him, bringing up her trust issues from her past. Then it all reached a pinnacle where they turned a corner and agreed to work on it together. Then they grieved the child together (memory garden). And ultimately their relationship is stronger through this experience.
Key lyrics with this theory, sort of hinting at a miscarriage??:
      - ‘Maybe it was her, flashes of the battle come back to me in a blur’
      - ‘Spineless in my tomb of silence’ Some womb imagery double meaning???
      - ‘Sweet dream was over’
      - ‘We can plant a memory garden’
      - ‘There’s no morning glory, it was war it wasn’t fair’
      - ‘Bloodshed, crimson clover’
