@@MFDOOMSDAa The first time I heard Fat Joe was on the Showbiz & AG album Runaway Slave. That's also the first time I heard Big L. I was blown away immediately. DITC ushered in that "hoodie & Timb boots" underground NYC sound in the early '90s, before Onyx, Wu Tang and Boot Camp Clique came to be.

Funny thing about this video, there are several artists whom I like better standing with Joe, not only DITC members Lord Finesse, AG (slept on), and Diamond D, but Grand Puba (the man back in the day, word to Mary J. Blige), Juju of the Beatnuts (great first album), and Greg Nice of Nice and Smooth. When this song came out you’d have never guessed Joe would be the last man standing-I thought he was outright wack. But he improved his flow on the next album, professedly inspired by Illmatic. (You may know he also opened a clothing store called Halftime, after the song.)
yeah Jealous One's Envy was a huuuuge step up from the 1st album. plus first appearance of Pun was on that album.
I never thought Joe was wack per se, but he couldn't hold a candle lyrically to his DITC bandmates like Big L, Lord Finesse, D-Flow and A.G. He had a dope, booming voice, but his flow was kinda elementary back then. Like you said, he didn't step it up lyrically until Nas came out with Illmatic.

Being Latino when this 1st dropped I was happy as hell to see a Latino putting out music. Can't front this was just okay when I 1st heard it. The bangers to me were "Watch the Sound" and "Say Word". But then he released Jealous Ones Envy..I was like now this is a classic album. Arguably one of the best intro songs to an album at that time. Every now and then he released this type of music (DarkSide Mixtapes) after his success came and he lets you know he can still go there. 300 Brolic and Slow Down being personal favorites.
Cypress Hill, Kid Frost and Mellow Man Ace over there on the West Coast really blew the doors open for Latinos in rap music. Fat Joe was making it happen on the East Coast, then later on you had Kurious Jorge. Remember him? He was a NY cat, but he also hung out with Heiroglyphics on the West Coast, building in ciphers and shit. Before the early '90s, you mainly saw Latinos in hip hop breakdancing and writing graffiti.
@@KtotheG for sure I'm 45. My dad took us to see Best Street in the theater. Long story short buying CDs was my thing in the 90s. I still have a CD wall in my apartment. 2600 CDs against my wall. In alphabetical order, about 90 percent is East Coast.

He shows up, we're talking, and the attitude is thick. Told him my family was from his general area on Simpson St, and his whole demeanor changed.
This was Fat Joe first joint but as far as New York Bed-Stuy Brooklyn is the worst place to go.. Cat's from Harlem and the Bronx don't even go there. Especially back then. When they said the Bronx was rough they meant the building's.. It was a lot of abandoned buildings and blocks in the Bronx. But today Brooklyn and the Bronx is totally different. Brownsville/East New York, Brooklyn is news breaker territory. Lived in both. In the BX now. Edenwald, Forest Projects (where Joe is from), was hot... but can't touch Brownsville. The crime is different. Don't sleep on Queens either... Lived in South Jamaica when I got out of the service and crack was just coming in.
Only east New York was know to be the most dangerous place in Brooklyn in the 90s. The Bronx always been dangerous for ever.
