  • Gyeongbokgung, or Gyeongbok Palace, is an iconic landmark in central Seoul. The compound looks stunning in all seasons, by day or lit up at night. But it also has a rich and often turbulent past since being built in 1395. It was the main Joseon dynasty palace until a fire destroyed it in the late 1500s. In the 1800s, it was restored - before being destroyed again by Imperial Japan during the first half of the 20th century. Now, we can celebrate the 30th anniversary of excavation and restoration work at Gyeongbokgung

I knew I'd made the right choice to see as much of this palace FIRST as I could on my first trip to SK back in 2019 (walked from one end to the other -- i.e. from Gwanghwamun on a roundabout path out to the "back gate" that looks out north toward the Blue House) - and what a walk it was! I could very easily have taken TWO days to see it all, but took about 5 hours wandering around, and was very happy I saw as much as I did.
Next time I'm in Seoul I'll tackle the other four remaining palaces - but I definitely want to see what renovations have been made to Gyeongbok as well!

Japan was originally called "Wae(small n snide)" before Baekje collapsed, and "Wae" was called "Yamato" in ancient Japanese. "Wae" is extended to "Wa (Chinese characters)". "Wae = Wa = Yamato" both have the same meaning. Japanese clothes were called wae clothes, and food was called wae foods. and now they are called Wa clothes, Wa foods. When viewed from Shandong, China, the place where the sun was born in the east was called Japan, so there is a book that called Baekje is Japan. It was only then that the eastern sun of the Korean Peninsula was born in the "Wae" country that passed after the fall of Baekje, so the national title of Japan = Nihonguk began to be used. This was in the late 7th century, after the fall of Baekje, that is, it is simple to explain that Baekje was what made Japan an ancient country. Susano, the founding myth in the Japanese Clerk, is set in Sosono, the mother of Onjo, the founding king of Baekje. And the Japanese royal family (his blood is a descendant of Baekje) created by prince SHOHOKU. Who crossed the tradition of Baekje's fallout culture, has continued for more than 1,500 years and has become a culture that dominates Japan even in the 21st century. Baekje delivered it, but why one-party dictatorship is possible that we do not understand, and because they are lower-class people, they live in compliance. If you study this idea "Wa", you can easily understand Japan and know why it does not change.

The Japanese can be very proud of their heritage, because they hide all the atrocities they have committed.
The rest of the world knows better.
This palace is ultimately one of the most beautiful places I have seen online and there should be great pride for the Koreans when they look up on the reconstruction.
      Well done South Korea.
They destroyed your palaces and then tried to destroy your heritage, but they could never take it away from your mind and your heart and your souls

Japan should really be ashamed of their military ancestors for destroying a lot of Korean heritage and monarchy. Has the govt ever said sorry for its atrocities? Now that many of us are getting interested in Korean history (although without a good background yet), We now look at Japan a little differently and somehow its shine and esteem we held for its culture is now a little diminished in some of our eyes.

Cultural appropriation is a concept born lately in the US and doesn't really have to do with the rest of the non-western world. Japan and Korea, even China under certain circumstances, like it when people from other cultures embrace their language and culture. They consider it as a sign of respect, if done in good faith, with good taste and care. Because they consider imitation as the highest form of flattery.
In the US it's the complete opposite, regarding certain cultures. It's taboo. And the international K-Pop fandom imposes some of these beliefs on K-Pop companies, as customers. Like forcing artists to apologize for having their hair done in cornrows. So this isn't really a Korean thing. It's a US thing imposed on Korea, via globalization.

That´s right. JPN destroyed it bcoz Kor´s emperor abdicated the throne by JPN´s annexation of Kor and the royal place lost the meaning of existence. JPN rebuilt the robust government office as you guys can see it at left photo in thumbnail and museum etc. instead. Kor ppls were definitely happy upon facing the end of misruling by former Kor´s government and touching modernization by JPN.
