The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

With this being only 2 years after the death of martin luther king this was not only a chance for joe and his family to get out of an almost hopeless life, this was a statement for the whole black community and the only way to make sure joe's children would't get beaten down by the american system.

But joe got the jacksons into a position the system would never allow them to get in to because of the way he raised his childen. He did what was necessary for a black family to get to the top of the system only to give michael the oppertunity to break the barrier between "black" music and "white" music.

Micheal said they would move furniture from the living room and dance and would have a songwriting competition while they washed the dishes… while they were cleaning.. Joe was a former boxer/musician who took on Three Jobs to take care of the family. It's the 50s and 60s with eight kids and black! They were just trying to survive. They probably weren't thinking that deep about it. The story is that their father found out Tito broke a string on his guitar they no one was supposed to touch. Joe made him play it to see what he could do with it sense he disobeyed him and was surprised how good he was. That's when he got the idea for a group (Tito, Jermaine, Jackie 1963).
He added Micheal and Marlon three years later when he was 8. If he was trying to hide Micheal why add him to the group at all. He was 8!
In the 60s groups were popular more than solo acts. Look at all the famous groups from that era. He was probably just following a format of the day. It probably wasn't that deep. BUT what made him even more rare and overwhelmingly amazing is the fact that it wasn’t just music and vocals that he was in his own league is that he was talented beyond anyone else in dance, creativeness and in every facet of entertainment! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it til I’m gone, even the worst Jackson brother was still better than any other star or entertainment! You can’t teach this type of mind blowing talent! I am the same age as Micheal I remember seeing this and could not believe someone could be so talented and so young and the rest of the band too. I remember my older sister bought the 45. I also remember their hits in the early 70's maybe it's me but it seemed like a different world back then.
I'm so proud of my African American Race, inspite of how we are hated, treated with injustice, and prejudice. We are still a very gifted, talented, intelligent, great athletic abilities, beautiful race of people. Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5 was a example that proved that. Michael Jackson was a Phenom and that's what some today don't understand when they are comparing him to the Beyonces and Brunos today. MJ was on another level. And it's funny how easy it is to make a star today with youtube and music downloads. Both very easy and accessible. Imaging standing in a store for hours to buy and= album? lol MJ has some of the biggest videos of all time and they didn't get that way from youtube. Had youtube existed MJ fans would have crashed the internet all by himself. People don't realize how HUGE his GLOBAL fanbase was and that's without youtube. It grew from TALENT!

@@julias7504 she is an entertainer. Singing whether you like it or not is mediocre at best on a technical basis. She is ehhh you could say a legend now. Quite a few catchy songs but less timeless songs you see. As a peer to the stars of last century no. Groundbreaking not really either. She is my age last star from the 90s. Beautiful as can be. But the golden age really of American music was 60s to 90s. What new genres are there not from last century. It's a bizarre time to be alive for those who lived last century. All of our decades were so distinct. Now everything is a disposable blur.

@@kazi2683 You must be young. I was at Beyonce's concert with Destiny's Child. lol I was at Stephanie Mills when she song Home LIVE. I know great entertainers all my life. Beyonce's live performances were taken from Tina Turner. Now saying she isn't good but I wouldn't say "greatest ever" after what I've seen. Beyonce had to learn how to perform live as it never came natural.
