If that's something that bothers you-her leaving it on the table or you not liking physical contact or silence or whatever it is-let her know! What I do with my therapist is write what I'm thinking or feeling on my phone that I'm not comfortable saying and then we go from there. It makes it a lot easier to ease into the conversation. I would love to see a video on "tips and tricks"/ ways to get someone who is shy about their problems to open up. Like a lot of people are shy and feel uncomfortable. How do you deal with that?if people don't answer your questions do you just move on and change the topic or try another "technique" to get it out of them? I just know that people can be stubborn because we feel awkward talking to someone, especially when they're new, and are worried about being judged. So I was wondering basically how you help a patient of yours to open up so you can help them with their problems.

    • @kimberlyvelezlmhc6745
      @kimberlyvelezlmhc6745 Před 6 lety +1

      Hey Chronically Cassidy- there are many techniques we can do- I try them all if I have to. Sometimes it's about asking more open ended questions, definitely asking them to clarify or explain, ask them to help me understand something, etc. If that doesn't work then I will be very honest with them about them taking the risk to open up more about what they want to to discuss... remind them of their goals for therapy, etc. I usually don't have an issue with this- I think it's a skill you learn through out your years as a therapist. :)

      That way you acknowledge that boundaries are something you are concerned about crossing and then your therapist will let you know if it is or isn't. That's what I would expect, at least

    I quit therapy recently because I felt like I didn't have the time for it in my life. I now realise that that was a mistake, but because I was doing ok at the time I for some reason was too stupid to have the foresight to know that I wouldn't do well without it. I'm now really struggling to reach out and go back into treatment because I know I'll probably self-sabotage and mess things up before I give it a chance to work but I think I have to now and I'm going to try and get hold of care coordinator's contact details to ask him to refer me back to the DBT centre.

And how are you ensuring you get the nutrition you need to get that goal time?” And she ends the session telling me she wants to hear how my training goes next week. Baixiulan Hi. I think that either u guys have to find a way to communicate and answer questions or ask the right questions or find someone who does because that's what it will have to take. If your car is on the point of breaking down and going to the junk yard but it can be fixed but u take it to a person who could fix it yet u refuse to tell them what u think it's wrong, or they try to diagnose it and won't get any feed back, so they can't do their job. so it looks like either u are blocking information, basically wasting time, or u are having trouble or fears to tell this information? well, if the latter is true then ask her to help u out with that. BUT try to make progress. what is an example of a simple question? because any simple question may be irrelevant if u don't trust her to answer her. first work on why u won't respond to simple questions. then work your way up to simple questions. Do u have Alzheimers? do u immediately forget her question? did u just forget that question?

    Ahhh glad I'm not the only one who does "door confessions"...I've gotten a lot better at speaking up about big things earlier in my sessions, though :) I try to bring up the important stuff first but sometimes I get nervous! I'm sure I'm not the only one here who does that! Xoxo

    I really like this video and would love to see another one like it--what kinds of things are you thinking about during session? Do you have any examples of times you have struggled in a session with your own emotions or reactions and how you worked through it? And a couple unrelated ED questions: 1. Do you ever comment if you notice a client has gained or lost weight? What do you think about this? 2. Can you do a video that explains the difference between AN B/P subtype and BN?

    If I am quiet or not really opening up my therapist will suggest we meditate. We usually do for about 15 minutes and it does help me open up. Though last time was hard because my anxiety got pretty severe towards the end of the meditation. My anxiety level has been up lately so I don't know if the quiet and trying to clear my mind just made it worse.
    Thank you for doing this video. I have always wondered what it was like from a therapists perspective.

    This is a great perspective of therapy. I personally developed some sort of mistrust of therapists because of some unsatisfactory past therapies.

      Karol I completely understand your concerns. Unfortunately, all therapists are not created equal. While there are some out there that you weren't satisfied with, I hope you keep looking for one because there are many many professional, well trained therapists out there.

    Thanks for everything you do, Kati! I have a question how do you deal, as a therapist, with emotional fatigue or therapist burn-out? I am working towards being a therapist, and I think it would be interesting to hear about that from a professional therapist.

    Therapists are like human librarians. They get to keep all these memories and life stories in their mind. They see the deepest pain and experience of society. And with each case, their practice gets stronger.

    I find it interesting that you call them clients and not patients. I just assumed I would be looked at as a patient if I went into therapy. Is this just a personal word choice, or is there meaning behind choosing one or the other? Really loving your videos. Just found them three days ago. I'm bingeing trying to pull all the info in as fast as I can because it's so interesting! Thank you for taking the time to share all of this with an audience. I'm sure it's hard work and certainly time consuming. I do love how succinct you are. Clearly, I'm not. I have a lot of trouble stating my feelings properly. Sometimes there's such a block between feelings and verbalizing that I literally am saying uuuummmmm, searching for the right words. Very frustrating.
