  • In this video I repair a 500MHz TDS620B oscilloscope and show how to hack it up to a 1GHz TDS680B.
    This mod will work for many scopes in the TDS500/600/700 series.

    Nice Job Jared, that was dirty, nice cleaning ..Upgrade indeed easy peasy . now you need to build your DOS PC and Calibrate it with FAS when your ISA card comes in, so you can use the full 2 GS/s .. then all the ADC's need to be in sync.

    The previous user of this scope was definitely oldskool,if you look at the "cheaterplug" that he used, that says enough.
    Everone knows these days that you must float your DUT and not your scope.
    The "cheaterplug" was in the old days how oldskool technicians protect there scopes, but that left the metal chassis of the scope ungrounded
    and can cause a electrical hazard when the chassis becomes live. Also, safetycaps on the input of the scope, will leak a certain amount of mains voltage to the chassis, and to the negative part of the BNC connectors on the front of the scope. This leakage can sometimes be up to 50% of mains voltage.
    When dealing with sensitive circuits, this mains leakage can cause damage to your sensitive circuits.

    Thanks for your efforts to share with us = m-u-c-h appreciated. Let's not forget that the real fix was just replacing a super-cheap diode = woot = that's gotta feel really good! I am sure you know these two cleaning tips, but for those that do not... You can remove the smell with ozone... If you do not have a generator, ozone is even sold in a can (or, it used to be.) IIRC, the cans could be found in automotive parts stores. Remove the top of the can. Put the plastic parts and the topless can in an air tight/Zip-Lock bag, force the air out of it and zip it closed. Press the valve cap through the plastic to fill the bag with ozone. Then, wait a day, or two, before removing the parts. Work outdoors and don't inhale the fumes. But, one trick to it is that you must remove every bit of dirt/ash/dust/oily residue, because it will hold the smell. You can restore the color of the plastics with a process called "RetroBright/RetroBrite." I am just learning about this, but it does not seem to be a cleaning product, so much as a cleaning process... Put the plastic parts into a clear container and fill it with high-percentage Hydrogen Peroxide (12%, or better, I think.) Then, shine a UV lamp on it. The UV light seems to be the trick. Search CZcams for videos on both cleaning processes. I am not responsible for anything, if you attempt this. NFM, I can't believe your wife let you put the plastics into the dishwasher! You are a brave man, to tread those waters... For those who also dare to do this, do not add liquid dish soap to the machine, just use the regular dishwasher machine soap. Proper dishwasher detergent will not suds up. Liquid dish soap will and it will literally fill your kitchen with suds. Cheers!

    • @NearFarMedia
      @NearFarMedia  Před 2 lety

      I actually used 6% hydrogen peroxide held at 50°c under UV LED's for a few hours on the smaller plastics after the dishwasher.
      Also, don't tell my wife! 😂

    This is really nice! If you did the hack without the subsequent re-calibration, how far out of cal would it be?

    • @NearFarMedia
      @NearFarMedia  Před rokem +1

      It will remain in calibration up to about 500MHz where it was previously calibrated, beyond that it is up to the luck of the draw.... :) It probably wouldn't be too far out, and would still show the waveform fine as long as you don't do any critical measurements from it.

    Why You talk so much about nicotine? (You were probably smoking like a steam locomotive a few years ago and now you pretend to be holier than the Pope...) Is it an anti-smoking ad or a clip about the scope service?
    Wouldn't it be easier simply to disassemble the casing and external elements, knobs, buttons, etc., throw it all into the dishwasher and after an hour take it out clean, smelling like it came straight from the factory?

  • @conorpodonoghue
    @conorpodonoghue Před rokem

    To attribute the discolouration, stickiness etc. to nicotine is unscientific and betrays an irrational anti-smoking bias. Who knows what sort of environment the device was in over its lifetime e.g. an urban area with significant air pollution, a factory etc. And to suggest that you are going to get addicted to nicotine simply by touching it is ludicrous. Equivalently, to suggest that it was unsafe to touch before cleaning is equally ludicrous.

      If you are so triggered over my comments on a nicotine stained oscilloscope that stank like an ashtray, the result of a disgusting self-destructive habit, then you are in serious need of some self reflection.

      It doesnt take a mass spectrometer to determine the stench, discoloration, and chemical deposits burning tobacco creates on equipment, furnishings, appliances and automobile interiors, let alone the skin and lungs of the smoker. Its a filthy habit and smokers are generally rude individuals.
