BMW E88 roof lock problem

  • I can open the soft top all the way without an issue.
When i try to close it, it goes all the way to the final position and just when the roof lock latches would turn to complete the locking process, it stucks.
My only option is to manually lock the roof using the emergency soft top release / lock screw, located above the dome lights. The process stays in an incomplete status, i cannot open the baggage compartment and i have a red warning light on the dash depicting the soft top. When i drive faster than 30km / h, i even get a non stop warning beep, just as i would get if my seatbelt is not worn.
I tried disconnecting battery, tried reset all errors using my Foxwell NT510, tried moving the soft top manually all the way back, then all the way forward, absolutely no difference.
I had the following error codes before resetting:
CVM: A69A Speed in convertible-top intermediate position higher than permitted
CVM: A68A Hall sensor, cowl panel closed
    CVM: A69B Enable / STOP line V_MOVE
CVM: A688 Fault in coding data
CVM: A689 Hall sensor, roll bar unclamped
CVM: A68D Hall sensor, roll bar set up
CVM: A692 Hall sensor, convertible-top compartment lid locked
    CAS: D904 K-CAN line fault
My permanent errors are (will not go away whatever i do):
CVM: A688 Fault in coding data
CVM: A689 Hall sensor, roll bar unclamped
CVM: A68D Hall sensor, roll bar set up
CVM: A692 Hall sensor, convertible-top compartment lid locked
I'm also sharing a youtube video of the whole process.
Has anyone of you faced something similar? Anybody with a suggestion where to start from? I tried going through the sensors 1 by 1, so far no luck, not even sure where my focus should be.

    fixed it.
On my car it was the sensor on the hydraulic strut that raises the rear part of the roof.
The cable was tied to the hydraulic pipe and was pulled tight, it had pulled the sensor out of position
you can easily get to it by taking the top trim piece off on the rear RH side, it just prises up. lift the roof half way and the strut is right in front of you.
    Good luck, hope it helps.

Hello. Same issue here. What is the correct position of the sensor you referenced ? I’d appreciate it greatly. Cheers Bill

if you put the roof half way up and take off the top trim panel on the RH side (I think it just prised off but you need to take top seat belt mount off).
There are 3 hydraulic struts on each side, one will be sticking up at 45 degrees find the hydraulic pipe going to the top and the sensor is just under the pipe. Its a little black block with 2 wires, its well hidden and should be tight in a cutout on the hydraulic ram.
I'll find the tech picture and post.
Ive got a pic of the locatin but cant post here.

@@flyingmonkeyslayer on the BMW parts cat its strut 07, see nthe little cutout at the top - the sensor sits in there - very difficult to see unless you follow the wires. www.bmw-etk.info/parts-catalog/prd/BMW/VT/P/E88/Cab/120i%20N43/ECE/L/N/2008/01/50765/54/54_0387

@@GregParker15 Hi Greg, I dont know how to post a pic on here. If you look at the link I posted you get a good idea of where it is. Pic doesnt help a lot anyway.
I put a post on this thread describing how to get to it. put roof half way up and take off the top trim on drivers side rear qtr, remove top seat belt bolt.
you'll see the hydraulic ram sticking up at 45 degrees. easiest to find sensor by following the wires tied to the ram, its a little black block about the size of a fingernail and 5mm thick. With luck it will just have pulled out of its seat.

    hi Mate,
    did you fix it?
Ive got exactly the same problem, even the pump noise is the same.
Im sure its a simple fault, but without 2nd level diagrams I cant see what is failing. Im sure it must be a hall effect sensor but I cant see where they are.

The cords reset themselves with the mechanical movement of the top.

Get a free version of ISTA+ version 4.3 and a k-can cable run diagnostics. You can’t get exact errors sometimes but it will show you the hall sensors status which you can use to diagnose which sensor isn’t responding
