Big paragliding asymmetric collapse with twists

  • Two collapses, one small one, and then the biggest one I'd had in 11 years flying. The mistake? Not flying actively. Note my right hand control moving up to the keeper at exactly the wrong moment.
This was my first flight in Piedrahita on a one week visit and a big day. The Piedrahita valley was benign, but it all changed when I crossed the pass into the Ambles valley. I was thermalling at about 800M above a combine harvester when I popped out the side of a strong thermal I'd only just found. If I had applied more RH brake to get back in, I'd have probably been ok, as it was the resulting surge I failed to correct hard enough ended up with two twists which made me glad I'd just upgraded my reserve. I ended up gliding on for another 25Km as I bricked it, and so missed out on the 85Km distance done by the other two members of our group who crossed the pass that day.

Nice vid. I think the dab on the breaks during the second one contributed to the twist. I used to have a Sport3.... very nice glider.

No instrument will warn that you're about to gett a collapse, but it will tell you how strong the thermal is as you fly through it. I just got spat out the edge and hand poor wing control. I went back this year in rougher conditions and had no collapses, so it's 90% active piloting and 10% luck.

Impossible To feel the glider holding the brakes like this !!! Try to rool at least one time the line over your hand

Mike, nice to watch it again sitting in my office in Greece. You might like to watch another twist video, a local pilot with one year's experience in hot, strong mountain conditions here. You won't believe that he walked away from it!

I'd have to check my track log to see exactly how much height I lost. 200m or so I think it was. As for the beeps the Aircotec alti vario gps I was using had a fault. What should happen is a high pitch for ascent and low single tone for decent.

Ha, it won't let me post the link. I'll email it to you.

How much altitude you lost second time, raffle?

    What's your wing loading?

Caps Pik top end of the weight range. It was probably about 98kg at the time but it was years ago so can’t remember for sure. The issue was not actively piloting the wing.

@@MikeJTPG I ran the same, had a bad launch and spun in and crashed a few rotations, I would have loved to post it up but my gopro failed my chance of posting here.

You can hear the oncoming collapse and I don't like that lack of sound Get active )

Caps Pik Indeed. Something I leaned talking to the PWC pilots in Piedrahita at the time and have been practicing for the last seven years. Not happened since with active piloting.
