The Pittsburgh option only became attractive to the Bears AFTER Russ had signed, and the price dropped for that trade to go through. The Bears had been seeking a #1, a #2, or a #3 from other teams. When Russ signed with Pittsburgh, they rewarded Pittsburgh for taking Fields by only asking for a conditional #6. Why is that? Chicago wanted Fields in Pittsburgh because they knew Fields would wind up being QB2 at best for the entire season. The primary reason they got rid of Fields was to avoid the potential crowd boise of a QB controversy in the event that Caleb Williams struggles early. That doesn’t go away if Fields is starting on another squad and manages to look good for a few early games. The Bears needed another team to give them a desirable pick or player for Fields, and then sit him on the BENCH! Pittsburgh was the only team that offered at least one of those benefits. Also notice how Fields worded his answer. He doesn’t have the mindset of SITTING all year. “Not sitting” doesn’t mean starting! Not sitting means PLAYING meaningful snaps at various points or at least getting significant 4th quarter work when Russ has built the Steelers big leads.
