Growing up in close proximity to the royal family, Lady Glenconner befriended both the Queen and her sister, Princess Margaret, at a very young age, developing a close relationship with them. Her friendship with Margaret was particularly strong and in 1971, Lady Glenconner became her Lady-In-Waiting, a position she would hold until the princess’ death thirty one years later. In 2019 she wrote
a memoir titled Lady in Waiting: My Extraordinary Life in the Shadow of the Crown, claiming “I was so fed up with people writing such terrible things about Princess Margaret. In her role, she accompanied Princess Margaret all around the world and was made a Lieutenant of the Royal Victorian order.

Inappropriate interviewer sadly who seemed to know little and didn’t seem interested in knowing more😂. Instead of facilitating and encouraging he looked bored and at times too nervous. Lady Glenconner of course would be nothing but polite and grateful for the session. Her book is excellent…what a marriage!
I agree he looks thoroughly bored and disinterested in Lady Glenconner's tales of her part in history.
She is very witty and has some extraordinary tales about her life with her husband, Princess Margaret and has had some pretty traumatic events in her life losing sons to drug addiction and AIDS over the years and still remains down to earth.
The more I watch the more I see how disrespectful the interviewer is.... who chose him to interview?

I thought I was the only person who thought the interviewer lacked interest. What she talked about was fascinating on many fronts, it would have been a much better talk if it was a speech.

@@rosinaphillips122 I think just out of respect for someone who is at that grand old age, any decent host will show more interest. Many things she said is now on record and can be 'history' for the future and I honestly found what she said rather interesting.

The interviewer seemed so dry and disinterested. He rudely stared at his questions and seemed to tune her out when she was giving her answers. Oxford Union needs to find someone more professional in the future. The Lady deserved more respect.

Did the interviewer really have to be there? He was clearly indifferent to the whole thing, had not done his research and his only aim was seemingly to tempt Lady Anne into indiscretion. Thankfully, Her Ladyship behaved impeccably, as usual, and saved the day.

It was a very enjoyable interview. Lady Glenconner was so interesting, however, there are lessons to be learned for the Oxford Union. This interviewer, and interviewers in general need to become more aware of how we communicate, not just in a verbal sense, but also using our body language. This interviewer did not appear to give Lady Glenconner his undivided attention, he spent a lot of the time, it would appear with his attention elsewhere; appearing to be present only after he had consulted his pre prepared list of questions. I am sure that when Lady Glenconner was his age this would have been quite disrespectful. it is important to remember that good manners are timeless and transcend all generations.

It would certainly have benefitted the interview for all concerned had the interviewer shown at least a vestige of interest in the Lady he was interviewing. I imagine that there would be many who would have given a great deal to be in his privileged position. You don’t know what you don’t know, and this interviewer was unwilling to learn. Hopefully this isn’t an indication of where the Oxford Union is going. Standards need to be kept.
It is disrespectful today! And he seems a beat away only from filing his fingernails. Shame on him especially as Lady Glenconner is a delight! I would listen to her all day and forever. He is a terrible choice to be anywhere near her!

The host was disinterested and bored but at least his apathy allowed that aged matron to speak at length and without interruption. Many interviewers tend to interrupt way to often. The generation gap is glaring.

Thankfully, Lady Glenconner gets by quite well on her due to her exquisite class and upbringing, which stand in stark contrast to his.
I didn’t think he was so bad, but his feet were center stage. Very distracting.
@DoubtingThomas I was thinking the same thing. They have a lot of commonalities such as 'gal' and 'gorn' for gone and 'orf' for off etc The also use a lot of military terms which is where pukka comes from.
He obviously had not even taken the time to read her book.
What a sweet and down to earth witness of history. Saving clothes coupons for the coronation dress, not being able to study as a woman and having no heating.. hard to imagine and food for thought.
Plenty of people had no heating. Most of the huge country houses had almost no heating.
Tiny cottages had at least wood fires in the kitchen, at least, but many of those huge country houses couldn't stretch to a fire in ANY bedroom. So whole floors with no heating at all. Nearly all the houses had big gaps in the windows sills, and the icy winds used to sail through bedrooms. The big kitchens had the ovens, etc - nice for the servants, and The family of the house might have one room with a wood fire, but few big houses were anything but freezing. You just had hot water bottles or heated pottery 'pigs' squarish 'bottles' with corks, full of hot water - or even a brick, from the oven, wrapped in towelling in bed.
I live in a house next to an open door to the outside, every night, and winter gets down to -8° C about 5 to 8 nights for the season - and many frosts.
I have dogs or cats in bed, a hot water bottle and 3 duvets and I am warm as toast until I get up.
Blenheim only got central heating because of the huge dowry of Consuelo Vanderbilt. She is remembered as the provider of Central heating by the family, now. Though I am sure it has since been updated...
Yes my grandmother won a scholarship. She was just a farm laborers daughter but was told education is wasted on girls and forbidden to take it. She only died ten years ago.

It was awful. Why choose him? He was obviously letting his politics get in the way of the interview and it seemed almost 'performative' at times. But then I remembered how stupid I found most of the kids who went to Cambridge when I would visit friends there as a teen. I was a working class kid who'd been in care and left school at 16. The big difference between us was their enormous confidence. I'd come top of my year in sats exams, yet I still didn't believe I should apply to uni. The kids aren't wrong when they talk about 'entitlement'.

The commentator appeared not to be interested in what Lady Glenconnor was saying. He was constantly moving in his chair and rubbing his face. She was an excellent speaker with so much insight into a period of history that she experienced and was able tell us in a wonderful realistic way She is an excellent speaker with so many visual commends that we could imagine living in history’s

'Unlike Diana, who came with sort of a posse of photographers, nobody knew Princess Margaret came' (34:48). Princess Diana's daughter-in-law is, of course, merely following her mother-in-law's lead.
'Well, that's quite the story' (4:38). 'Well, I mean, that's certainly quite the story' (21:16).' 'Well, I mean, it's certainly quite a remarkable story....' (23:22). Social skills? Sitting close across an elder lady with legs crossed, and in the beginning he asks a question and then attends to his clipboard as his interviewee talks, clearly waiting for her to have finished rather than listening. His lack of breeding highlights her the opposite.

Wow... She's a beautiful and fascinating soul . I really enjoyed listening to her. I'm so glad she spoke from her mind and not necessarily from the Interviewers ques. I'm so very glad princess Margaret had her as a friend. In a fish bowl like the British royal family fish bowl, I imagine Lady Glenconner would have been a truly valued friend for the Princess.
As for the Interviewer...Wow... if it wasn't for this lady's true grace, he wouldn't have lasted a second. Destined for Fox News, as career choices may be slim..lmao.
What a lovely interview! I enjoyed Lady Glenconner's book, and I hear that she has a new one coming out in 2023. It didn't seem like the crowd really enjoyed the talk, and I thought that it was fascinating.
Perhaps the crowd were anti monarchists despite listening to this wonderful and entertaining lady. Maybe it was their way of showing contempt and especially after her mentioning snowflakes. Too funny!
Also, were that the case, they might have been shown that the life of unadulterated luxury that we imagine royalty and the gentry to have, was behind the scenes very similar to an ordinary person's life, (no heating, rationing) albeit with wealth.

This is a fascinating interview and recollection of royal history. How lucky we are to have an honest, humble employee to share her life experiences and her truth with the royal family.
The host/interviewer appeared disinterested and ill suited for this. Smirking into the audience?! Rude. Poor choice for such an esteemed personality such as Baroness Glenconner.
Perhaps the worst interviewer I have ever seen in any format. His apparent indifference was not only rude but also contrary to the aim of any interviewer -- to engage the subject! Lady Glenconner performed a master class in aplomb by ignoring his bizarre mannerisms and talking with animation. I think the Oxford Union owes her an apology. If other notable figures watch this interview, they will probably decline future invitations. His treatment of her was potentially humiliating, but she rose above.
She couldn't understand his bizarre accent which was quite funny. He was asshole & Lady G should have given him a slap for his rudeness.

Lady Glenconner’s interview was the best, best & most enjoyable In my memory. She has lived through so very many experiences, true life’s very wonderful gifts & truly the worse of of losing children being devastating. WWII, the blitz & the yrs & yrs following, a sometimes very cruel spouse & his being physically cruel. But she’s nearly 90yrs, written now (2) valuable books, setting history straight at last, the 2nd opening so much more helpfulness to badgered women,by following the works of Queen Camilla’s cause for Women. & Interviewer-allowed her to speak uninterrupted, Jolly well appreciated…
What a delightfully entertaining woman. I could have gladly listened to Lady Glenconner regaling her remarkable encounters and experiences for hours. A rare treat indeed. She would be fascinating to speak with. I admire her terrific candour and empathise with her tremendous loss.
People who have lead such adventurous and magnificent lives as the Baroness has are an absolute authentic treasure, and can provide an extraordinary insight into recent history having lived through monumental challenges and tremendous change.
The majority of us quite likely can not even begin to imagine such contrasting decades. For example I was born in 1970, whilst there have been many advancements and changes in technology, and certainly to a lesser extent in fashion since the early 90s even including the style and shape of motor vehicles, aircraft and architecture also very little change at all since the 90s.
Although the 60s - 80s were uniquely varying, although they are nothing like the undeniable changes the occurred from the 1900s to the 60s. The enormous contrast from the 1900s to the 30s were exceptional with such phenomenal differences in each and every decade being so distinctly different from one to the next.
Indeed what an adventure Lady Glenconner must have had, particularly in her social circles, being witness to the curious and fantastic leaps of change and mostly advancement could only be described as an absolute thrill ride through history.
On a less auspicious note regarding that ill-mannered character who interviewed lathe Baroness, what an enormously disrespectful individual, he paid no attention to anything Lady Glenconner spoke of despite her compelling anecdotes.
Arrogantly he directed his attention anywhere than with his guest, ignorantly preferring to frequently check his watch demonstrating extreme disinterest while dismissively fussing with his notes/folder, he engaged more with a bottle of water!
I honestly don’t believe I can recall a more rude and common individual entrusted with such a privileged role.
Canada is a nation of the most kind and sincere, polite and delightful people, they could only be deeply ashamed and embarrassed by such classless conduct from one of their countrymen, he is certainly not an ambassador they could be proud of and nor could the prestigious University of Oxford. Simply appalling and tremendously disrespectful!

What I find interesting is the commonalities between the upper and working classes of that era. My grandfather, who was in the workhouse* as a kid, would say 'gal' for girl and 'Orf' for off or 'gorn' for gone. The both also used lots of military terms which is how so many Indian names got into our vocab. *It has recently changed from the workhouse to a home for the poor etc but changed in name only, because it was run along the same lines.
The man on stage is obviously bored to tears. Should have gotten someone instead of him as this is real history, told by a marvelous Lady.
What an embarrassing interviewer. He couldn’t raise more than 1% of interest in what this lovely lady with wonderful manners & memories was saying.

And as not to make her ladyship look old and confused, he simply let her speak. But all you see is an American who you perceive as not bending over backwards and bowing to the aristocrats and royals.

I love her. Her book is great. She’s fantastic with her stories and her great sense of humor. The interviewer is really a dullard. He barely looked at her, so busy reading his notes, drinking water, looking down, playing with his watch. Yikes. Good thing he managed not to yawn.
Lady Glenconnor is a wonderful stort teller and its lovely to have this first hand account of the behind the scenes of this historical event.
That interviewer was extremely rude with his figeting and lack of attention and his distinct lack of interest. Very bad manners and not acceptable at all. Who ever choose him should really reconsider their decision and not allow him to do anymore interviews.
He should never come into contact with any human ever again. He cannot display any respect or value for them. She is gloriously interesting.

What a beautiful spirit she has. An example of how money and status doesn't protect you from the hardships of life. Her directness when speaking about her son and his death from AIDS in the '80's and her other son from drug addiction was unexpected. I would love to ask any who are reading this to capture recordings of family, friends, neighbors who are in this age range. It's so important to capture their memories of a time that is moving away from us fast. I'm 60 and grew up in Mississippi and our family doctor saw us in our home. I did my first office visit with a doctor when I was in the 3rd grade in 1973. So many things have changed. Some of that change is wonderful and some is dreadful in my opinion.
Yes, you give great advice. I'm the same age and regret not recording my grandparents. My memory of their stories, and they had them, becomes less precise as time goes on.
The interviewer obviously had somewhere better to go to. Such an interesting talk whether you are a Royalist or not and should have deserved a better reception.
Lady Glenconner is delightful and such a great storyteller. However, the disinterested interviewer left a lot to be desired. The best thing he did at least, was to allow her to speak without interruption. But his condescending chuckles when he thought she had given too long of an answer, his look of disinterest and bored fidgeting was distracting, like being at a lecture with a bored teenager. I am pretty sure Lady Glenconner was aware of it but is too confident a woman to give him any thought and just went ahead with her wonderful stories and descriptions of historical and personal experiences. She is a treasure.
She glanced at him for feedback or encouragement once or twice, was rebuffed, & swiftly employed her wonderful social skills to amend the situation.
Indeed, she rescued the interview and gave a wonderful talk all in her own? He’s useless and worse.

So we did get to hear this lovely treasure from bygone era speak naturally about her very interesting life. Thank you Oxford Union. The interviewer seemed a bit distracted though which I find off putting.

Such a shame the audience were so boring and the interviewer was bored and disrespectful ， honestly they could have had a more experienced interviewer. Lady Glenconner was fantastic , she deserve more respect from this generation …l simply enjoyed her and a joy to listen to her stories.

This host is acting like he got the short straw, painful to watch. That aside, a marvellous opportunity to hear about a world that is quite different than most.
The commentator/interviewer was awful. He couldn't remember where she was brought up! Hopeless.
The interviewer was so ignorant, he couldn’t even remember the significance of Holkham Hall to Lady Glenconnor when a member of the audience asked a question about it.
Lady Anne, in contrast, was charming, extremely interesting and candid as ever.

I love all the insights provided by Lady Anne Glenconner - what a glorious storyteller she is. I have bought her books and each one is a marvel. I highly recommend her novels - they are very entertaining. I must say, the interviewer is ghastly. He clearly hasn’t done his homework and his lack of interest is irritating. I do wish the camera hadn’t cut to him at all.
