  • I’m often asked what my favourite place to go to in the North East of England is, and without a doubt it is Beamish Living Museum located in Stanley, County Durham.
I luckily live only a 12 minute drive away so have spent many School trips, summer holidays and days out here, so I’m often quite surprised by the amount of people that travel to the North East, specially to visit Beamish.

I’ve never waited in the queue for the sweet shop. Glad you filmed it.

I haven't been since the 90s, it seems to have developed a lot since then. This place may have also started my love of black bullets.

My first visit to Beamish was in 1989, I'm sure back then it opened later as I remember it being dark getting the tram back to the exit from the town. I'm sure it was in October my first visit? I have been many times since with my children and now my grandchildren and the love of visiting never fades.

There were no queues when I've visited before. It must be getting a lot more popular.
Did you know that Fry's invented the chocolate bar and the chocolate Easter eggs as we know them today,?
I'm not so sure about the slow pace of life back then. As I remember, the normal hours for workers were 12 hours a day, 6 days a week with only Sunday's off. Search for 'A Visit to Peek Frean and Co.'s Biscuit Works (1906) Cricks & Martin'.
We had one of those window display chocolate bars back in the 60s. It was made of wood. 😁😁
I gave up eating aniseed balls. They turn your tongue purple. 👅 You're not a fan of Black Bullits?
Very few people would have had bank accounts in the Edwardian period. That would have lasted up to the 1970s because nearly everyone was paid in cash.
I remember the little Co-op in Lancashire had sawdust on the floor.
My grandad smoked Ogden's Battle Axe pipe tobacco. It came in blocks and you had to scrape it into flakes with a knife.
I think you're right about the ice skates.
Not sure about buying cure-alls in the chemist shop. The patent medicines had ingredients like opium (for children's toothache) arsenic and radioactive face creams.
21:43 We had a black bellows camera like that. The paper bellows fell apart eventually.

Aniseed balls are indeed the best but rhubarb and custard is a close second if they have none

I used to love going down the mine, I found it interesting because my grandad and uncle were miners from kibblesworth. I found the Freemasons hall interesting too but I would have paid more attention if I had known they would be controlling the government today. Thanks for the blast from the past. 👍🙏
