  • The video shows the steps of starting the diesel engine of the Valmet Rautpohja reserve power station and the measures to be taken during operation.
The State Artillery Works reserve power station was built to secure the energy supply for the weapons factories in central Finland during the Second World War. Later, the diesel engines of the reserve power station were used to produce backup power for Valmet Rautpohja powerstation department.

To me, this is absolutely a thing of beauty. And I love the attention to detail such as the hand pump for oiling the engine as it is barred over. Thank you for sharing this and thank you again for the English subtitles.

Holly God how's complicated to start that generator. For me, at my work, for starting the generator, I push a single button, the electronic equipment does everything else... Nice video, thanks!

Этот дизель запуститься даже без электричества, не говоря уже об электронике

I worked in a coal power factory and syncing a turbine driven generator needed complete manual synchronisation at that time. It was always a challange. Today, its only a push of a button, you're right.....

Отличное видео. Но зря не показали шильдик двигателя. Там написано "WUMAG Göerlitz". Это значит, что дизель выпущен между 1921 и 1945 годами...

These are German engines, from WUMAG- Waggon- und Maschinenbau Görlitz. To be fair the Germans were allies around this time due to their shared concern over the invasion of Europe by the Soviets.

The Waggonfabrik Görlitz (Görlitz Rolling Stock Factory) merged with the Görlitzer Maschinenbau AG (Görlitz Engineering Corporation) and the Cottbuser Maschinenbau-Anstalt und Eisengießerei AG (Cottbus Engineering and Iron Foundry Corporation) to the WUMAG - Waggon- und Maschinenbau Aktiengesellschaft Görlitz (Görlitz Rolling Stock and Engineering Corporation).

I understand this is now part of a museum. Could someone please tell me which museum this is? Thank you!

The reserve powerplant is located inside an industrial estate that is unfortunately not open for the public. One of the reasons of making this video was to give access to this piece of industrial heritage.

Looks neat. However. Hope this wasn't an emergency generator. You could have used solar panels and waited for the sun to come up quicker than this 😜😜😁

Not totally true - in wintertime sun goes so deep over horizon on that location, so it is not a option to rely only on solar.

Thank you for your question. The power station is not in the reserve use anymore, but it is now used as a museum. However, all the four engines are still completely functional.

Wumag Görlitz engine. Very detailed and clear explanation. Thank you. (I missed the disconnecting from the national power system before shutting off the engine)
