I was born in KCMO but grew up in KCK. More activities on the Missouri side but I preferred living in Wyandotte/Overland Park counties on the Kansas side. My favorite residential area in KCMO is Ward Parkway between 63rd and 95th.

I was born, and grew up in Kansas City, and have lived in all sorts of neighborhoods on both sides of the state line. My old neighborhood is one that was considered a rough part of town 50 years ago, and it's probably worse now, the Independence Avenue corridor just east of downtown KC,MO. I still know people who live in that part of town, but if you don't know the area, avoiding undesirable neighborhood activity is a crap=shoot. That could be true of much of the area between Troost Avenue east to the Blue River. Some areas are quiet, and nice; others are a hornets nest where even a city boy like me avoids even during the day.
One rule of thumb; If the businesses in the vicinity all have bars on, or have the windows and doors boarded up, look elsewhere.
Many areas that have been sketchy in the past are being renovated, or gentrified as people rediscover the terrain that drew residents here in the first place.
There are also some historic neighborhoods, for instance, Hyde Park for one mentioned in the video that have some beautiful residences. South of Brookside transitions to the "Waldo" area that boasts a very pedestrian neighborhood of mostly single-farmily homes and some apartments with shops, and restaurants in walking distance, et al.
On the other hand, certain suburban areas that are beginning to show their age have had an increase in crime. Certain parts of what's known as Ruskin Heights has had a number of unfortunate occurrences to put it mildly.
      Here's one tip.
In the Midwest there's a convenience store chain called "Quik Trip".
If there's a Quik Trip store in the vicinity, that's a positive sign it's a relatively safe neighborhood because if they can't follow their wide-open business model due to security issues, they will sell the store and move out.
      Hope that helps.

I recall visiting my great gran back in 99 and noticed this about KC downtown. It looked boring. At that time me and my family were passing through while moving to the Bay Area from D.C. so you can how my perspective would be as such. I’m sure KC has its perks (definitely want to do a foodie trio there for the bbq) but don’t see myself living there.

There is no truly urban life in KC. Probably some of the worst city planning I've seen. "Downtown" is basically a parking lot and the "urban" area's plaza, crossroads, brookside general lacks some important aspect of urban life.
