Thanks! And to me it's equally amazing to think of what they did in the decades following the migration. Not for the faint of heart!

Beautiful. Thank you for this. I have such tender feelings for the sacrifices of our fore-bearers. This brought me to tears.

I have LDS friends, what’s the best way to celebrate Pioneer Day?

Well, I don't think we have what most would call mainstream traditions that we share on this day, but it's common for nearby church buildings of our religion to have little celebrations with food and games like a wagon race. It doesn't really matterthe food. It doesn't really matter the game. As long as we gather together. I, myself, really want to start some traditions to feel closer to our people from this time, and I think becoming more in touch with my own history is the most important peice missing. The event starts and ends with a prayer, and I'd have to say that's the most unifying thing.

Taking note that this comment/question was posted two years ago, but for what it's worth, I think it could be fun to celebrate Pioneer Day with Honey Comb (for the Beehive State), churning butter with cream in a glass bottle, and a dutch oven party over an open fire. In addition to the Mormon Pioneers, I like to watch for patterns of whenever a people of any faith go to great lengths for religious freedom, as we see with the Pilgrims and the founding of America. Monumental, a movie by Kirk Cameron, is excellent at showing this pattern. These peoples are often peacemakers, looking for a way to worship freely and create a beautiful place to live; they're passionate, devoted, resilient, and sacrifice a lot in accomplishing this. But in the end, it's worth it to them, if their children can have a freer future! ! LDS or otherwise, there's something really beautiful about celebrating a passion like that! And I think you're LDS friends would love to celebrate with you!

I visited the handcart trail and graves. I was not inspired. All I could think of was the irresponsible parents who put their children at risk. Too bad there wasn't a CPS back then.

Dawn, there was no where to go. They were pushed out because of their faith. They had to leave.
