One of the most iconic nct songs
NCT's whole group concept is based on dreams, so in NCT-U's "Make a Wish (Birthday Song)" they talk about making a wish like on your birthday because wishes are often things you dream of happening. Everything NCT does is about dreams, dreaming or being in a dream state. Therefore, that is the theme you will see being repeated and referenced in all of their MVs across all of their sub-units.
As you saw, "Make A Wish (Birthday song)" has 7 members -- Taeyong (NCT's leader, main rapper, main dancer), Doyoung (main vocal) and Jaehyun (main vocal, sub-rapper and visual), who are members of NCT-127; Xiaojun (main vocal), who is a member of WayV; Jaemin (lead rapper), who is a member of NCT-Dream; Shotaro (main dancer and vocalist), who is Japanese, is no longer a member of NCT but is now a member of SM's new boy group RIIZE; and Lucas (rapper and visual) who is from Hong Kong, is a former member of WayV.
If you like their dancing, you really need to check out the dance practice for "Make A Wish." NCT are known for being amazing dancers and they have a dance practice video for almost everything they do. You should consider pairing your reactions to their MVs with the dance practice that goes with it. :D
Because NCT is an SM Entertainment group, it shouldn't be a surprise that they are also amazing singers. As you are starting to discover, SM is known for having some of the best singers in the industry. You can't be an SM artist without having unbelievable vocal abilities. Even the company's rappers focus on vocal training. That is why the company has gained the reputation as the vocal powerhouse of the industry. All of SM's artists and groups are known for being top tier when it comes to live vocals and perfect harmonies.
NCT -- which stands for Neo (a pop culture term that means new/original) Culture Technology -- currently has 20 members. And the group right now as a whole has 4 sub-units -- NCT-U, NCT-127, NCT-Dream and WayV. (NCT will officially become a 26-member group when NCT's 5th sub-unit the "New Team" debuts.)
Therefore, their style is meant to be new and original with elements that embrace different cultures and technologies to create their sound. What you just heard is considered NCT-style, they don't really have a traditional music style that you can attach to them.
NCT is a group that is constantly changing and rearranging its members and sound and we never know quite what to expect from them. With a concept that allows the members to rotate between sub-units, changing, adding and subtracting members depending on the concept and style of the group or song, you should never expect the same thing from them. You are better off always expecting something new, that somehow, also ends up sounding very much like NCT. LOL
NCT-U is made up of all the NCT members, they just add and subtract members from all the other sub-units depending on the concept for the song. NCT-U songs span a wide range of styles and genres and can include anywhere for all 20 current members (soon to be 26) or only 1 or 2 members. The U stands for United, but I also like to think of it as Universal because of the way the group never has a fixed number of members. This sub-unit is designed to be fluid, which means the group is constantly changing and rearranging its members with every song.
NCT's fourth sub-unit is WayV, which debuted at the beginning of 2019. They are NCT's Chinese sub-unit who produces songs in Mandarin and promotes in China. There are currently 6 members in this sub-unit. All the members of WayV have Chinese heritage, but like Ten who is Thai, they aren't all native Chinese. Most of the members of WayV had already debuted originally as members of NCT-U + 3 new members who debuted specifically with WayV because they were Chinese. (Kun, the leader of WayV, debuted as a member of NCT's special project group NCT-2018 and WinWin debuted as an original member of NCT-127, but he no longer promotes with 127 since WayV's debut.)
The only reason why WayV doesn't have NCT in their name like the other 3 NCT sub-units is because, at the time of their debut, there was a lot of political issues between Korea and China, and because of that Korean companies were not able to work in China. NCT's Chinese sub-unit has been going to debut for years, but with all the political issues it took SM Entertainment a long time to find a way to work around all the rules the Chinese government put in place to prevent its native Chinese citizens from working with anyone associated with Korea and preventing anyone who was working with a Korean company from working in China.
Therefore, in order to circumvent some of China's restrictions, SM found/created a Chinese company that was willing to take on NCT's Chinese sub-unit, but also allow SM to have a say in the group's concept and promotion activities. Part of how they get around the rules is they gave the group a name that distances them from their Korean roots. (That is also why WayV's Chinese fans are called WayZenNi instead of NCTzens and why WayV has their own lightstick design that is different than NCT's, etc.) The company WayV is under is called Label V which is part of SM, but separate from the Korean branch of the company and it produces songs in Mandarin to keep the Chinese government happy. All the members of WayV also speak Mandarin and have some connection to Chinese heritage, but most of the members are not native mainland Chinese citizens, so this gives them some immunity from the Chinese government. But they are representing China and they are promoting Chinese culture, so the Chinese government kind of turned a blind eye to the fact that they are technically still under a Korean company, as long as they hid any connection to their Korean company while doing promotions in China.
NCT is one of the most internationally diverse groups in all of Kpop. The members as a whole represent 8 different countries and they speak 7 or 8 different languages. For example, there are 11 native Korean members (*Taeyong, Doyoung, Taeil, Haechan, *Jaehyun, Jeno, Jaemin, Jisung, Jungwoo, and new members Sion and Daeyoung), *Mark is Korean-Canadian, *Johnny is Korean-American (from Chicago), 5 Japanese members (Yuta and new members Riku, Yushi, Ryo and Sakuya), *Ten is Thai, *YangYang is Taiwanese but he grew up in Germany, Hendery is Chinese from Macau (China) and 5 mainland Chinese members (WinWin, Kun, Xiaojun, Renjun and Chenle). However, they all live and work in Korea, so everyone speaks Korean fluently. Plus, many members have attended international schools or lived abroad, so there are several members who are also *fluent in English, on top of speaking 2 or more other languages.
NCT is SM's attempt at taking over the music industry around the world. SM's original goal was to eventually have NCT sub-units representing every major city in every country in the world. For example, they are just about to add a Japanese sub-unit. It has always been SM's plan to have world domination. And to that point, right now NCT-127 is the group that SM is using to try and get their foothold in the U.S. music market with all English versions of song like "Regular" and "Highway to Heaven" and collaborations with American artists such as Jason Derulo, as well as U.S. concert tours and promotional tours with the American media, etc.
So, this year is NCT's 7th anniversary, but debut dates are different for any number of members because it all depends on when they were added to the group. And many of the members of NCT actually became recognized by fans even before debut because they were part of SM's pre-debut group project called SMRookies (or the new members who were part of a reality survival show called LASTART), so SM did activities with several of the members before they debuted.
