If I draw a rose and it comes out looking like cabbage I'm going to be like, "look at this awesome cabbage I drew".
LOL! Wise!
I'm gonna love that damn cabbage to death!
😁👍

Thanks for the tips. I haven't done charcoal since I was in high school been 8 years for me. The only time I use charcoal pencils is when I'm sketching out for paintings. Charcoal will be something that I will get into later on after I get back into my groove in art. Been out for 4 years and it feels amazing to be back into it.
Glad you're back to art!!
This is a good start to practice with charcol! This is my first time that I am going to practice with this mediums. I never use them, since I watch a Lisa video, and wonderful advice of how you can get easy results, with color pencils, or other mediums, just practicing with charcol first. And I buy it! 😅 Thanks Lisa for those tips!🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
My favorite medium. I don't see a lot videos on charcoal. I appreciate this and I really love your channel. I just love what you do.
Timely tips for me too! Got an Amazon Gift Certificate and bought some charcoal supplies, the water soluble graphite, and more paper to try! Haven’t worked in charcoal in years , I’ve been out of high school for a loooong time lol! Thanks for all you give!
Teaching your brain to actually SEE what you’re looking at, is harder than it sounds lol. It took me months to realize I wasn’t really “seeing” my reference photo. Now that I can see, I can confirm that this elevates your work!
I am so impressed. You are clearly a master artist and teacher. I am just watching this because I’m a competent artist, but teaching doesn’t come easily. I’m teaching a class on charcoal for the first time, and I just didn’t have the language. Thanks so much for sharing your wisdom!
I'm so glad I could help! Good luck with your classes, that's awesome that you're teaching!!
A really timely video Lisa!!! Thank you!! Just got the Derwent 24 set of tinted charcoal pencils, 3 of their paper stumps and a pad of coloured Mi Teintes paper for Christmas!! So happy to put these ideas into practice now. TFS!!
Thanks so much for your charcoal videos! They've really inspired me and I finally tried charcoal after avoiding for so many years thinking I wouldn't like it, and I love it! I just did my first charcoal piece a couple weeks ago, and I can't wait to do more. :D
Thank you for the tips. I haven't tried charcoal yet. Your rose is stunning ❤
These are some great charcoal drawings tips. Will definitely keep them in mind when next I use my charcoal.
Powerful and beautiful drawing under your magic hand! This is so creative! Truly amazing Art, your are the most creative artist
Thank you for the tips! They will be very helpful for me and your rose was beautiful! Would you consider doing a person portrait in charcoal soon? I would love to see how you do it.
I've been working with white and black on tan paper and just produced a pretty decent portrait. Thanks for the tips!
Thank you so much for this! I’m a new artist and the tip about over blending I think explains a lot about my struggles with charcoal lately
6 Things beginners need to know about charcoal drawing definitely!! It's important video for any painter, great work🎨 Regards 🙏
I like your approach on charcoal, great tips and the rose is just beautyful. Personally I prefere very, very smooth paper (like Bristol) for charcoal and graphite and seal the layers with a fixative. ☺
Have you ever tried soft filbert brushes for blending? It gives the softest shadings and transitions.
Your tip with the abstract shapes made my life so much easier, it's the perfect method for everything you paint.
You are always full of invaluable tips and tricks....always a favourite 🥰❤️
I think the paper is most important aspect in most art, more than paints and brushes .... just my opinion. Seems you're saying the same too :D
Wow, I had planned to draw a charcoal rose tomorrow!
Charcoal tip explosion at 10:53 🤭
Excellent💯👍👏 work
What if you want to add color? Can you successfully mix charcoal with pastel or Conte pencils? Do you need to use sanded paper instead?
You can add pastels or conte pencils to the canson mi-teintes, but sanded paper would also work. You will have to try both and see what you prefer!
I haven't tried charcoal but I actually just bought a pack of generals a week ago! I am coming from illustrative digital art and pencil sketches after 15 years so I'm planning on experimenting with different mediums and mixed media. I purchased the charcoal because before I dive in to my paints and pastels, I want to practice drawing and shading and getting values correct and stuff like that...I felt like charcoal was easier and forgiving (and you confirmed it). I'm not sure if I want to do realism or semi realism yet, but I'm definitely doing what I did with digital art, and that's creating my own compositions, so I am not going to be copying photos except for referencing, I will be putting together my own designs, it's just what I am used to. The funny thing is that my main subject is flowers and animals, so the first thing I'm going to attempt are flowers like peonies and roses! I've already drawn plenty of flowers with pencils, I actually used to draw all my artwork by hand and scanned it in to digital rendering. I'm glad for this video it's really assuring my decision to start with charcoal!
True, she sounds like a behaviorists - thats a good teaching comment.
Thank you for this video. Am currently drawing a commissioned Portrait And I was kind of confused on how to use white charcoal and also some tools that I can use to actually blend the this charcoal drawing.🙂 how timely the video is!!!
hello nice drawing so charcoal white and soft is enough?
Paphs rule! I love orchids. They're the only plants my cats won't eat!
That's one orchid I've never gotten. I need to! I love them! I mostly have phals with a few oncidiums.
@@Lachri I've got a couple of Oncidiums. They're in an East facing window. There's a local nursery that sells bloomed out Paphs for a decent price..$15 or so, which is less than half of what the blooming ones cost. They'll be on sale in late Feb. Yeeehaw!!!!
Please, do you use hard charcoal often in your drawings? Can I rely to Soft and Medium that I just got, or I should defenately get a hard charcoal pencil too?
what about a canvas? what i’m looking for if i wanna try out charcoal? is there a specific brand/detail of canvas that’s ideal for charcoal.
Canvas is too rough for me with charcoal. That's not something I ever use.
Is glassine paper like parchment paper?
Is there a difference between blending and transitioning? I keep hearing the word blending when I feel like it's more of a transition between two colors/tones.
It can be used interchangeably.
@@Lachri 😁👍
"Photorealism means you are working from a photograph."
I feel like the biggest idiot now.
"Me-Taren't"
I'm sorry but it's hate to see what you call advanced then. Lol
This is a late reply, but I think the tips were good for beginners. If you try to draw a rose as a beginner, don't worry if it doesn't come out like in the video. It's just one good practice subject since the shapes and values are quite random and make you force learn to draw what you see. Other good subject that came to my mind was glass bottle with water. There can be lots of reflections and refraction of light etc. that you really have to pay attention what there is in the picture and just draw them as they are.
