Cleaning the mill scale off will go a long way in improving the welds. Especially with the TIG torch. That's why you see the spatter and sparks from the torch. Filler rod is also your friend. Cool project though, I'm looking at doing something very similar. Thanks for sharing.

Nice job but seriously, use the guard on your grinder. Those cut off wheels only need a tiny crack to blow apart and do a lot of bodily damage.

U should try wearing thin leather gloves or deer skin and choke up on torch head. U will have better control. Try keeping the tungsten angle perpendicular to work. Make little figure 8s when welding without using rod and will blend it better i found.

Looks like the problem there was some kind of draft blowing the gas away.

Nice idea, you should really at least talk to someone about basic welding tips. There is free info everywhere. Check out weld.coms CZcams channel.

Promise me you will enroll in a night ciass to learn tig welding correctly. Alas you have undercut the material because you chose to use an autogenous process- "without filler wire ." The strength is less. You broke off a tungsten and have poor looking deposits. It is essential that you grind steel clean for tig, its not very forgiving as you have seen and you are completely wasting your gas by not using a filler rod.Better to unlearn any poor habits now than have them become a greater handicap in the passing of time. You also took a comparatively longer period of time for the weld passes that you have had to go over twice ! I hate to see anyone struggle and some instruction with theory included will help big time.

as stated I am still learning, and since then I have learned a lot. I will admit I really don't take the time to clean the metal as much as I should. as far as taking a class, its not gonna happen.. I have a regular day job and a family to take care of right now but , maybe in the future.
