  • From humble beginnings as a fuzzed-out, proto metal garage unit to a brief flirtation with Space Rock, UFO’s career took a sharp right turn when guitar virtuoso Michael Schenker joined their ranks. Over the following five years they proceeded to release five albums exemplifying the 1970s hard rock sound. They seemed to have it all- a wild man on bass, a unique crooner with a world-weary inflection that elevated their lyrics, and a guitarist who helped set the bar for the next generation. Yet for all their swagger they never quite grabbed that brass ring, and today lurk on a tier lower than the one that occupied by many of their contemporaries.
For this episode, noted heavy metal journalist Sue Verica joins the show to discuss the legacy that UFO established during their golden era.

Oh, LOVE this band. I think some of Marty's (and many others) problems with UFO are the result of viewing the band through an 80's metal perspective, which kind of dooms them to inevitable failure. I love their ballads and sentimental moments - they sort of remind me of the British version of Cheap Trick ("Out in the Street" could be a Cheap Trick song, title included).
Speaking of Force It and Hipgnosis, the coolest thing about the cover is that it was designed by Peter "Sleazy" Christopherson of Throbbing Gristle and Coil fame, who cast his two future band mates, Genesis P-Orridge and Cosey Fanni Tutti, as the naked cover models.

Very cool show! Sue is always an awesome guest and it's great to see your guys' takes on older bands like this.
I was 100% in line with Marty when I first checked these albums out, having heard a lot of hype about them being classics of hard rock and coming away disappointed. That said, I did add some tracks to my "liked songs" on Spotify and have been really digging them when they pop up on my work commute. I'm actually really looking forward to revisiting them (which I plan to do over the next couple days) and I think I'll appreciate them more now that I have a better idea of what I'm getting into.
I will also mention I've gone through a similar thing with other 70s bands (Thin Lizzy and Blue Öyster Cult for example); as a metalhead you get used to albums that are pretty consistent style-wise and where every song keeps the energy level up (apart from maybe a small interlude here and there). A lot of the mellower tracks on these old albums have turned out to be huge growers for me and now I love them just about as much as the harder rocking songs.
Wish I could have caught this one live but always great to watch later anyway!
    Cheers 🤘🤘

I was fortunate enough, and old enough, to have seen UFO in their prime, opening of course, for Blue Oyster Cult. Shenker was awesome.

Extreme metal fans can't appreciate UFO because their used to constant head banging. I grew up in the 70s and this band the Scorpions and others were my band.

The first time I dug into these albums a couple years ago I ended up coming away with the same feeling Marty had.
I just finished re-visiting them and even going in with some optimism for more songs to "click" with me, not much changed unfortunately.
Don't get me wrong, there are some absolutely AMAZING songs throughout, but to me most of the albums are definitely a roller coaster ride.
I think maybe one of the big reasons behind this is simply quantity over quality. I know it was kind of the norm for the time but I personally can't imagine putting out a full-length album every year for 5 years amidst touring. Surely the label executives etc were pushing these guys to crank out the albums, and I think they suffered as a result of that.
To me, there are 2 albums worth of really great to amazing material throughout that 5-album run, and if they had focused more energy into a smaller number of songs there could have been probably 3 great albums instead of 5 good ones.
Just my 2 cents of course! I'm glad musicians these days generally face less pressure and can operate on their own timeline for the most part, especially within the world of rock and metal.
Anyway, still a great show regardless. Thanks again Marty, Alan & Sue!

Y'all need to bring in Martin Popoff to educate about the greatness of the Paul Chapman era. I cannot believe you're casually writing off everything after SITN. Shame.

Great review… but I feel like yall are metal heads. Reviewing. a rock band from the 70s. seems a bit predictable what y’all think of them..
