I was frustrated because I could not get a good sound out of my clarinet. After this tutorial, I can now get a good sound and play "Cardiff by the Sea" in my clarinet book. Thank you for this tutorial. It is excellent. I am 10 years old.

I was told to start on a 2-and-a-half reed when I was 11, and my teacher was legendary in my area. But other than that, I think this video is extremely helpful and accurate.

Started clarinet a month ago, biggest challenge was finding decent reeds & the right strength. Rico reeds were honestly so random I gave up, after lots of experimentation I ended up with Vandoren 1.5 strength. I have a couple of 2's but really wouldn't recommend starting on anything higher than 1.5!

It's probably better to start on a lower reed size to build up your muscles. A harder read will give you a more characteristic tone only if your muscles are strong enough for it.

I don't think children should start with a 1. It's too easy. Most people use around a 2 or 2 1/2. Intermediate players may use a 3 like I do. It is supposedly harder to blow but it gets great sounds and if you're tough on your reed then 2 1/2 or 3 is perfect. Still I think this is an amazing video. I show everyone this video who wants to learn. Thank you.

I am 41 and have not played in years and when I play low notes on the upper register or open g I get air sound I don't get that tunnel sound. Sound lime other is a led in my clarinet. This only happens on the lower notes. Help!

if you don't want the airy sound, (which it shouldn't sound like) you have to tighten your embouchure and make sure it is firm. you can tighten your embouchure by pulling your cheeks back, I guess you could say. It may be uncomfortable at first especially since you are older but you will get used to it.
