  • I make my first eagle feather fan and take you along with me, while providing basic instructions.
DISCLAIMER 1: I had no prior experience of fan construction, nor do I have friends or family that have experience with fan construction. I conducted hours of research to find information from several Native sources to learn every detail of fan construction. If you plan to follow my instructions, keep these facts in mind and note mistakes were made in this video. If anything in this video was done “wrong,” or if you have better solutions, ANY AND ALL ADVICE IS WELCOME IN THE COMMENT SECTION for myself and future viewers to learn from. Chi miigwech!!
DISCLAIMER FOR NON-NATIVES: My non-Native audience is welcome to watch this video for entertainment. However, the instructions in this video are meant solely for Indigenous peoples to recreate. Feather fans are deeply spiritual and hold significant meaning to Indigenous people who use them. Do not recreate a feather fan if you are non-Native, even if done so “respectfully”, and especially if done so for a costume.
In addition, please remember that it is illegal for non-Natives to own eagle feathers or parts: www.fws.gov/midwest/eagle/eag...

Just a pointer to help... Use a fly fishing spool threader..it looks like a wish bone.. that way you can really pull on your work and get very detailed... Just a suggestion... That's what I use.... Hope that helps

I'm so glad to have found your video! I have held onto my Eagle feathers (but not been able to use the number of them I have) for YEARS because I've been too scared to make a fan, and it's been difficult to find good instruction. But the time has come! I appreciate you sharing your mistake, as I was struggling with understanding feather placement with the curves. Thank you so much for your humor and sharing. I feel more confident to take on this project! Miigwetch!

He chose to live as a french Canadian instead of sharing his beautiful Native American heritage and beliefs with his kids and grandkids. It saddens me but I believe he must have had his reasons.

❤❤❤ Chelsey, thank you for allowing us to share in this sacred act of creating your eagle feather fan.
I love this little peek into your life as a young Indigenous woman, wife and mother.
Personally, I am flabbergasted that your little ones allowed you so much uninterrupted time!! As an artist and writer, my children were always needing our wanting something right at the most critical points. And, I loved to hear the sweet voices of your children in the background.
If you ever decide to help your little ones make their own fans, I would love to watch the video with my 5 year old grandson.
Also, I hope you will create a video of you dancing at your first PowWow. I am interested to know how the experience expands your spiritual relationship and enriches your life. How will it improve your role as a mother? I berks we all need to plant ourselves deeply in our roots of spiritual connection to the Divine Source.
I am very impressed with the beautiful craftsmanship and your commitment to creating the finest, most beautiful fan.
Will you create another one? Wouldn't that be a lovely, life-affirming present for someone special on the occasion of their own first PowWow?
I love your sense of humor. And I love that your husband is so supportive of you. You have such a beautiful energy and an inner light that makes this world a more hopeful place.
Blessings be upon you Dear One. ❤

Thank you for your video. I'm making my regalia for the first time (coming home to my Modoc roots) and it's so helpful to have videos to show how to do it since my Native side of the family is basically ignoring their heritage... ☹️ Well not all thankfully because my great aunt made sure my whole life that I never forget my native ancestry and that always meant a lot to me so here I am, trying to recover my heritage.
I'm trying to learn how to make the feather plume hairpiece (women's regalia) and I'll be beading my headband soon also. I'd be super-thrilled to find a video on how to make those (though I've been beading for a few years now so it's more the structural how-to that I haven't figured out yet). Please let me know if you have a video for that. Thanks!

@@prettycringeyyou have the right name cringey. You should add illlerate to it aswell. I'm very qualified to teach as I've been making these fans for 30 years and am a 50 year old indigenous man myself. Why don't you shut up and kind your business. I was talking to her not you. I wasn't criticizing, I was offering professional advice.

Thank you for the video. I think you could have left out a few of your editorials but then that wouldn't make it your video. Your fan is beautiful it is yours you made it with your hands and your ideas. It is yours.
I would have suggested you use hot glue instead of the wood filler. Also the glue to put on the black leather, my recommendation is to use 3m spray glue or a contact cement. I would prefer the contact cement but the 3m is pretty much the same in a spray.
I would have also, since you are good with a needle, stiched the black parts together. But then you always have next time and from what I can see you may have an opportunity to make more for others. You're color schemes are natural and your sense of symmetry is very good. I'm am more of a raw natural. The feather fans I've seen in museums are pretty raw. The feathers I find along the road are from birds I'm not sure of what species I just pick up what I can find that are of interest. I try to straighten them put the like ones together and try to keep it as symmetrical as possible but also with a very raw native look rather than a commercial look.
In my opinion, and this is only my opinion as I am not a "registered Native American" I am only one who appreciates the culture, the commercial beauty that has bestowed many off the Native culture is part of the indoctrinated white culture. I'm not saying that is bad but it looks like something in a GAP or American Eagle commercial.
