- With the float coat on, it's time for another experiment: mixing and applying a top coat of lime plaster. Unlike the previous, float coat, this one won't have any hemp in it. But as this is the first time I've applied this kind of plaster, it's probably going to take a bit of getting used to when it comes to mix ratios and how to apply lime plaster to a stone wall.
In this video I'll be using a finer sand and using a bit of trial and error to work out how much water to add to get the right mix consistency. As mature lime putty is not so easy to come by in rural Portugal, I'm using hydrated lime powder and adding water to make a ready to use putty-like consistency.
Will it work? Let's find out...

It’s truly fascinating to watch Guy experiment with so many different types of material. I very much respect his process. Love his reaction to a successful mix!
Once again, thank you for being the guinea pig on the lime plastering. We have the same book about lime and it is wonderful to see how it translates into a finished surface from someone who has never done it before. It gives us hope that we will be able to do the same. Since we are rebuilding a huge mansion, we will be using the steel trowel method to get a nice polish.
Before we know these areas will come together so quickly, all the groundwork has been done. So impressive 👏
I like how you are very methodical with your experiments and keep pushing for a result.
I think perfection is whatever you aim to achive achived. So a rustic texture is also a perfect finish if it is what you aim to achieve :)
Well done, Guy!!
You sure conquered the plastering learning curve. Well done Guy, lovely job 👋
Trying to find the right superlative but it’s taken by almost everyone in comments. I find it extremely satisfying watching you find your mojo with plastering. Well done you guys!
Luscious finish, and to know that it’s natural, breathable, even better. Congratulations 🎉
Fantastic rendering, well done Guy! You should be proud of yourself! 😉😉🍺🍺
such a satisfying material to work with, lime putty and mortar is. The shine in your eyes when you realized you got a good-feeling mixture is VERY relatable :) thanks for the video!
You guys are truly amazing to watch. I love all the thoughts that go into everything! Looks great!
Plastering in itself is a tricky trade to learn and working with lime is completely different so you done excellent 👌 well done keep enjoying it 👍
The scope of work ahead of you is mind boggling to me! But every experiment and success in that one little room will help to ease the work and time in the others. The sore muscles are a different story, lol! Great work Guy. Happy for you guys and your under floor heating project to begin!
Nice job. You are probably 2+ years ahead of us on your project. By the time we get to the lime plastering stage, everything will have grown back and you may be hankering to do some more to 'keep your hand in'. Consider this an invitation 😉 Galicia is not that far away...
It is so nice to see you doing something that is not exhausting AND is so successful.
That second wall was bloody near on perfect considering you’ve not done it before😊🇦🇺
Just had another ridiculous quote come through and finding your youtube has inspired us to give it a go ourselves in our very old property in Gloucester. Thank you!
How exciting to becoming close to finished with the construction of an entire room. Just having the laundry room set up will be wonderful. I like that you will be using either a clay or lime wash finish. Congratulations on getting to this point and now having the parts available to complete the underfloor heating. Next winter will be far more comfortable for you two.
Congrats Guy!! You got it, at last!!!👏👏🎉🎉🎉🎉🌟👏👏🎉🎉🎉🎉👏👏
One wall at a time, otherwise it can be overwhelming. I think you did a fantastic job and it's wonderful to watch someone take that much time and effort to craft something.
The rustic finish is beautiful and fits perfectly with the farm house. Can't wait to see you moved in and enjoying all your hard work.
G'day from downunder Kylie and Guy,
Don't you love it when something works out better than you thought it would.
Hey Guy, love the comment at the end about by the time you finish you'll be proficient and then never do it again.
Keep up the good work 👍
You've definitely got a talent for plastering Guy as I've said before. Very well done - (Kylie could be a little bit more free with the praise!) One method you might like to try is instead of spraying with water on the last stainless steel trowel before you trowel it is you could try a wide brush in your left hand that is soaked with water and you 'flick' it as you trowel - sort of quicker than a spray and you'll get into a rhythm.
@Darren Thyer Yes, agree the hand held spray bottle is more efficient and no puddles on the floor.
wow! the difference in the walls was very noticeable! GREAT job, Guy! I can't wait to see the finished product!
This was wonderful to watch, thank you so much for sharing the process!
So proud of you both!!!🎉 enjoy following you. 73 year old granny in NC
Boy, that was a lot of work! Beautiful work, Guy!
After all your gained knowledge and experience with lime plastering you could probably become a professional for hire! Great work you both. Can’t wait to see the end product.
It’s like watching mad science. I’m glad you got the right proportions. Looked like icing a cake.
Well done, your persistence payed off. I was relieved when Kylie gave it the OKAY.
Woo-hoo...the underfloor heating stuff!!! The walls look great and we love the rustic look, too. Looking awesome, guys! 😊
Very very proud of you as you should be.Well done mate.Fantastic
Practice really does make perfect!
Those walls are coming along beautifully.
Now I can say that you are practically living in paradise. Watching your video, it adds a little bit of optimism to me. I remembered how I bought a plot of land, built a big house, installed solar panels, dug a well, and became almost independent from the government system. Then the war came and fear for my children never leaves me for a moment. Perhaps, if possible, we will have to leave far away and start everything from scratch.
In a good way, I envy you. How great it is that you can freely travel around the world.
Good luck Blessings

@@carole4119 Thank you very much.
I am trying to find a way out. I have enough strength to do something good, but in our time, money is still needed. I think I will find options - there is nowhere else to go.
Nice work. Definitely a learning process. Decades back when I was patching plaster walls and ceilings here in the US I learned it takes a while to learn your “touch” with a trowel. Plaster is a multi layer process. The deeper layers just get sloped on and smoother as you work out to finish coat with fine finish plaster. Like you did. The undulating walls were especially noticeable in the corners. To better smooth out undulating walls use a longer trowel. Something like an old 4 or 6 foot level or a very straight aluminum angle iron to drag out a straight base coat. Maybe glue a cheap level eye to it.
You should be able to buy an inside and an outside corner trowel to easier make sharp corners.
I loved the excitement Guy had when discovering he had the right texture for his mix. It turned out very nicely Guy, well done.
Looks great - you two are troopers!
Beautiful!!!
And once again a brilliant video!!!
It's looking great!
I must be a geek because I loved that 🥰
That’s beautiful work Guy!
Bravo Guy!! Well done! 👏
Not to take away from what you accomplished in this episode which is massisve but I am really looking forward to next week's edition. UFH!
🙌👏🙌👏🙌👏🙌👏WELL DONE! LOOKS FANTASTIC! 👏🙌👏🙌👏🙌 I SO ENJOY WATCHING YOU BOTH!
Nice bit of Plastering , you now have got it down to a T 👋👋
Woah, buddy. You can tell on camera what a difference this coat made! I was so impressed, I ordered the book. We lime-washed the exterior brick on our home last summer, and I'd love to have some reason to do some inside walls... Maybe I'll build something with the excuse of needing to lime plaster it. LOL
Looks awesome!
Lovely job! I like the way the sunlight creates a natural shadow (if that makes sense) monastery .. natural..etc
Good work. Glad you got the feel of everything mixing and applying
You should be very proud of yourself Guy.
Excellent work. This place is going to be amazing! Warm, inviting.
I agreed with Kylie! Great job Guy!😚
It does look good , worth all your trials. Well done Guy.
That is amazing, looks so smooth and finished, well done Guy!
This was quite informative. Thank you for soldiering on sorting out the process.
Oh the walls have turned out so beautifully, Guy. I loved seeing how pleased you were when it WORKED!! It was uplifting to see you happy...and I think you deserved a premature celebration. It appeared to be nice to the touch and Kylie did approve of the 2 top coat wall. Success!
yeah! looks great! Well done!
Me and the missus were talking so loudly when Guy was doing the final smooth finish on the second wall, like "use more water" or "needs a second coat" etc... That we were so pleased when Guy did use more water, and Kylie said it needs a second coat! It's almost interactive watching your videos, definitely entertaining that's for sure!
Beautiful finish!
Love the result , great video , had to smile that when it’s all finished you’re going to be pretty good at it , but never do it again , 😂, well done from me but more importantly the boss was happy with it too, 🎉Graham
Looks great!!!
Good job, Guy. You're moving along and learning as you go. Keep up the good work.
You're doing better all the time. You two are really amazing!
It looks really good; so much better than before! 😊

Excellent experiment
Brilliant work Guy. Thank you for making our life so much easier ;)
I am so pleased you have passed this latest challenge it must give you such a boost for the long journey to come
Great & respected
it looks amazing 🤗
You probably already know this but I thought I would mention that fine furniture makers go over the surface of the wood with a light pencil so they can tell where they have sanded. That could work for you to know where you have done the final coat
What a great video. This has been very informative. Thanks guys!
Wall is looking good!
Amazing work guys, the place is going to look lovely!
Just subscribed, hello from South Carolina, USA
Absolutely fascinating! Kylie and Guy, your work ethic and tenacity are impressive and your explanations are so informative. I will soon be building in Mexico and I want to learn everything I can about the lime process for the walls. Thanks for the detailed information on the different products and the process. xx Texas
Although a 'how to' plastering video wouldn't normally be my Saturday night go to, you both manage to make it compulsive viewing 😂 really great to see it coming together, think it's such a good look on the walls and looks just right for the farmhouse. Good luck with the rest!!
Hi Guy, there's another CZcamsr called 'Portugal from scratch' that really seems to know a lot about lime putty and prepares big batches. She's also into cob mix.Check her out. Love the passion, the dedication and humour you two put into your hard work. Bless and thank you
Hey Guy, I have seen someone use a piece of rigid foam insulation to burnish the finish coat of lime plaster. It seemed to work well.
Edit: I forgot to mention that you are doing a fantastic job without my input.
"Now I am quite excited".. (chuckles) ... Such a geek! "...
U are way 2 funny😄! Great job guys!
Looking very nice after so many efforts you must be happy with it hugs from greece
Keep up the spirit you're on the wright track, nicely done.
👍👍very nice finish, great job!
looking good!
Very well done Guy. You are on your way to being a veritable expert. 👏👏... at plastering and getting plastered it seems🍷🍷🍷😉🥳
Guy the walls you've done looks good and what's more has Kylie's approval yay. Look forward to your next project xx
What a treat to be able to experience so many phases of finish without suffering sore muscles. Thanks Guy. This is probably the most illustrative video on wall finishing I've seen. I have a tiny powder room done in a plaster technique I don't at all like, and always wondered if I could bury it in a few more coats. I've contemplated using drywall mud to hide it since I'm well experienced with that product.
Perfectionist at work.
*Guy, awesome job done and the mistress of all trades, Kylie has given it the thumbs up too.*
Hello Guy
The walls look fantastic
Don’t be so hard on yourself
You are doing a fantastic job
Love to both of you
Andrew 💐💜
