  • After attending a new years eve barstool racing enent, I noticed an interesting piece of wood being used as a firewood chopping block. I asked the owner why he decided to use such an interesting piece of wood as such a fixture and his response was, "as soon as it breaks you can have it" XD Well, it finally broke and now it is ours to play with.

One thing Duka Heritage does that’s really special to me: he makes sure the finished piece retains features that tell the story of the lifetime of that piece of wood.

Beautiful piece of apple. It is amazing how it ages that it develops its own patina.

Well, I like the finished result, Todd, as well as the process to produce it. It’s nice to see you back at the lathe and, as always, thank you for sharing 🌞

Talk about perseverance. Duka Heritage definitely has it. Plus a lot of patience. I lost your channel very unfortunately since my tablet and my laptop broke. So I am so happy to have found your channel again and to see that you have got a new lathe among other improvements to your workshop. That bowl is a true character piece. Awesome.

As always, a pleasure to watch you at your craft. So appreciate how you include your thoughts as you turn, showing us that creative genius at work. I like that you use a little resin to make a piece complete without having resin become the piece. Thank you for sharing.

You really used All The Things to bring this one to completion! She's a rough beauty. Gorgeous grain and what a great eye you had to recognize that in an old chopping block. You gave her a second life...she used to get beat up every day, now she gets to be admired!

Quite a workout. For the next one, you might try black resin with the black or brown CA glues for a more cohesive color palette. Truly a one of a kind bowl with a back story. Hope you write a page to go with it.

Thank you so much, really glad you liked the piece. With this one I was really trying to find a way to highlight the flaws in this piece and make them more like features. I think it brings some more of its story to life that way. 🙂

Incredible beauty from wood that most would have put in a fire!! So much grain going so many different ways must have been a booger bear to turn. I’m still using the Brad’s products. Noticed you using the Yorkshire Grit and really putting a shine on it!! Good job!!
Keep on turnin’ ‘cause love it and Thank You for doing so!!

I work with old barn beams frequently and I have found this tool to be pretty good. Granted it is harbor freight, I store mine with out the battery in. It is holding up so far. Barn beams are full of metal and this finds it pretty well. Cheaper than the router bits, band saw blades or chain saw chains. Less than $20 last i knew. Just my thoughts.

A chuck is essential, many of the other tools are complimentary. Really depends on what you’re turning but as in any trade the complimentary tools become essential once you have them. Slow and steady, piece by piece ✌️

You might want to try UV resin to infill instead of mica powder and CA glue. You can tint the UV resin the same as your regular resin for less color shifting

Bowl turned out nice but you earned it! Bandsaw and chainsaw blades toasted in one chunk of wood is a pretty high price.
Question: have you gotten used to the bigger lathe yet?

good video. Sorry about the nails. You are one of the few turners on CZcams that uses a Rikon 70-3040. What made you decide to go with that late over the others in the same price range? Do you still use it/Like it? Keep up the good work.

Thank you 😊 I love the Rikon. I think the biggest factor was the small footprint, huge swing potential, and the sliding bed which maintains the bed length potential.

It's to bad you don't have the time and find a container that would hold your Bowl that you could put the whole bowl in plastics maybe doing it in stages of different colors of plastic risn. In the cracks and then turn it back down I think that would look really cool.

It's wood, and wood that has had quite a previous life, so you're bound to get all kinds of strange and ugly stuff. But that's the beauty of wood. If we wanted something uniform we'd turn resin or metal or something.
