Taibi had a very good reputation when United signing him and was regarded as one of Serie A's better keepers. Worth remembering that you had keepers like Peruzzi, Toldo, Pagliuca and a young Buffon all around at the time too. Then he put a United kit on and fell apart!

Caulker was signed on loan because of injury troubles leaving Liverpool with 2 senior CBs.
And Caulker was used as a 90th min sub 3 times to ping balls on to since Benteke was useless. It's not like Liverpool had Messi on the bench to throw in against a team defending on their goal-line to try and find a winner(and it worked against Norwich).
Why did Liverpool sign him? Because that's what they could get. It's better to get someone that has actually played that season then someone who sits on the bench for a bottom half team.
And Klopp had been at the job for a couple of months, he wasn't about to make wholesale changes in the middle of the season.
Was anyone excited by the signing? No. Did it make sense? Yes. Liverpool were short on defenders and needed a back-up in very short order.
Also, the fact that Caulker lost against Liverpool is kind of irrelevant. Hardly his fault alone that SOTON were shit on the day. Van Dijk lost to Liverpool 3-0 a month before joining tham. Should Liverpool have said "fuck it, he's obviously shit." And moved on to a different signing?
