- Here’s the full Von Trapped Family recording we made for Hay Festival, where we chatted to Rosie Boycott about A Theatre For Dreamers and Hydra, David Gilmour sang some Leonard Cohen with Romany, and Charlie Gilmour read one of Leonard’s poems. Enjoy!
What a lovely guy with a lovely family. Sold all his guitars for charity and raised over 29 million breaking all auction records. An all round decent human being and so deserves a good life.

Ah how lovely. This is my memories of ‘living with the covid crisis’. This is when I delved into one of my favourites, Leonard Cohen. I became utterly obsessed. I bought and read everything he ever did. Pollys book has immortalised the island of Hydra for me. This video has opened up another aspect of it all for me. I am now going to read Charmaine Clift. As someone down below pointed out, during the Covid music came our in force by so many amazing aritsts from John Fogerty and his wonderful family, Mary Chapin Carpenter doing weekly show for months, Robert Fripp and his wife, Paul Simon and so many others not as well known but doing virtual concerts form home. When I found the David, Polly and Family it was amazing! Love Leoanrd Cohen. So sad he is gone but his music lives on and his story because of Polly! Thank you all for these amazing shows!

I, as a Greek, feel very proud that Mrs Polly Samson wrote a book about Hydra. I am a very big fan of David Gilmour and I hope that sometime maybe during summer time I will meet both of you accidentally on a Greek island.

Polly is a great writer, I remember an early short story cillection.
Must read this a book as a huge Cohen fan myself. So interesting to hear of the inspiration for this.

I've stumbled across these Theatre For Dreamers videos a year late and I'm spending a beautiful sunny South African day being charmed and, in this instance, greatly moved by the music, the words and the poetry of familial warmth. I'm a huge Leonard Cohen devotee and I'm wondering how I visited Greece a few times without ever going to Hydra. Despite being a struggling artist I hope to put this right when Covid allows. Thank you, David and Polly, Charlie and Romany, for the inspiration! Efkaristo.

What a beautiful family, both inside and out. David and Polly seem to be such a perfect couple and we can tell by their lovely children what wonderful parents they are! Romany is so beautiful, she looks a lot like David in my opinion. BOTH children seem to be so talented, like their parents. This was so interesting! This book helped me feel closer to a friend who lives in Greece, but also reminded me of how much I love Leonard Cohens' songs which are performed with great feeling by David,Polly and family.
Songs I teethed my guitar and singing on. And the Leonard Poems are the most wonderful. Then I went on to play Pink Floyd. Such sweet people here.
Having read the book, I like the insights that this interview brought to the story. Thank you Polly and the entire Von Trapped family. This is superb.
I'm very grateful to have discovered this today. I've been a big fan of George and Charmian for decades - but I've been struggling morally with a similar conundrum, of wanting to write a fictionalized story straight out of an historical account of many known Australian aircrew (and many more unknown, except to their families) who frequented a particular pub in London during ww2. The idea of putting words in their mouths has truly felt like it would be too much. It's gratifying to hear Polly speak about her own experience with this.

One huge positive to Covid, its inspiring artists everywhere to produce priceless art as this. This would not have been if wasn't for the pandemic, it's beautiful and crazy at the same time.

As a Hellinas I'm proud and greatifull for the fact DG and the Oikogeneia embracing the Hellenic culture and a spec of the history. However it is an slingshot for advertising.....which shouldn't happen, or at least more music than anything else. However a beautiful family ❤️ and is so great to see DG to show the path to his lovely wife and daughter. 🙏🙏

This reminds me of my college years, when I would spend my summers on Mackinac Island, in between Michigan’s upper and lower peninsulas. Ironic that I had always felt I left a ghost of myself behind, and hearing David Gilmour sing of ghosts. I sometimes wonder if that place haunts me or if I am haunting it... still staggering about the grassy highlands with bottles of Grolsch and playing old CD’s of Jethro Tull...

I find it impossible to believe that the David Gilmour here is the same person who was barking out Roger Water's "Dogs" lyrics on the Pink Floyd album "Animals". The 1977 album was, in my view, one of the greatest anti-establishment efforts ever - it was more punk than "punk" in the Year or Punk. This "thing" though is more like one of those arty-farty coffees you can now spend 2-3% of your monthly salary on. I struggle to get it. It seems to be inspired by hugge.
It's simply a different project, people can move on and do different things. If you're "struggling to get it" you're probably thinking too hard about it
