2023 Audi RS3 vs Toyota Supra: Unfair Comparison!

  • This 2023 Audi RS3 is the newest generation of Audi's ultimate 401hp, 5 cylinder AWD sport sedan. The Audi is the new kid on the block with tons of critical acclaim. How does it stack up against the Toyota Supra in canyons and on the freeway? We run 0-60 times for each!
**When I refer to "auto mode" at the beginning of the RS3 drive, I meant the transmission was shitting itself. I was in Dynamic mode when I filmed the segment, but I drove it in Individual and played with all the modes for a quite a while before I got on camera. The car is reluctant to downshift on its own, and the turbo lag is very noticeable under all conditions.
Let the battle begin with this episode of Unfair Comparison Audi RS3 vs Toyota Supra!

As a RS3 owner I would like to mention that you are 100% right. I have been always saying that rs3 has a few drawbacks. The first one, as you mentioned, the turbo lag. It was quite disappointing for me to feel it. And yes, it is very noticeable and something I had to get used to specially if you prefer moderate driving on highways. It gets a little better if driving in manual mode but still quite big wait time until the turbo spools. I've driven many cars and I was quite surprised after driving B58/S58 engine from bmw (supra, 340, 440, m2, m3, etc). The spool is instant, it almost feels like a powerful naturally aspirated engine.
Secondly, in terms of cornering. I have always been saying it and will be saying it. Rs3 is about going straight line. You will feel that understeer right away on the rs3. Audis have been always struggling with this issue. You have to be extra careful when taking corners. I personally didn't feel quite a struggle driving pretty much every bmw line up.
Third, I would like to mention the brakes on the rs3. They are, however, spectacular. One of the best brake systems I have ever experienced. You will be surprised how powerful they are. By the way, lamborghini has used the same front brakes in the past for a few of their models.
Fourth, tuning potential. As the author of the video mentioned, rs3 is quite known in the drag race world. I already said that rs3 is about to go in a straight line and it is 100% correct. The way this car launches is absolutely insane in a good way of course. Even stock rs3 feels very fast when launched. After some modifications the car is literally a beast. You will be destroying pretty much every single car and you won't be afraid to race super cars such as Lambos, R8s, Ferraris, etc. But let's talk about some drawbacks. I would say it is the price that you have to pay to at least to get to Stage 2 levels. On every forced induction engine when it comes to tuning there are basic mods that are the must such as air coming in, coming out and cooling of the air. Mostly people upgrade their air intakes, downpipes and intercoolers and of course software upgrade on forced induction engines. So on the RS3 is is quite expensive to be honest to do this kind of upgrades. For example, upgrading the downpipe requires removal of the driveshaft. There is also one more part that usually rs3 owners upgrade is the turbo inlet. For such small part it takes quite some time to install it. Plus forget about doing everything yourself because there are big changes you will damage something such as the fragile driveshaft. Supra, on another hand, is very user friendly regarding upgrades and not expensive in terms of parts and labor.
Overall, I still think that rs3 is a great car but not for everyone. There are things that you just have to get used. My suggestion before buying the car is to actually drive it for quite some time before making decisions.
I don't think someone will read this but I just wanted to share my thoughts. Thanks!

You are accurate to everything mate...the b58 engine has amazing results with bolts on and can go to 800 hp without open the engine, but to put that on tarmac with the supra is hard
On the other hand with the rs3 at 500 hp range its a killer from a dig and at roll also

      @revmatchtv  Před rokem +3

This is what I stated in the video. Lots of comments seem to think I was in the wrong mode, or somehow want to believe what they've read about the Audi as the be-all, end-all sedan. It's not. The turbo lag is extremely noticeable and the transmission is frustratingly reluctant to downshift, regardless of mode. Sometimes, it did not downshift in manual mode, despite not being too high in the rev band. It's a wonderful straight line car. It's not a wonderful canyon car. I'm sure it's blazing fast at the Nurburgring, but a fast time at the Nordschliefe has no bearing on how the car behaves on a tight canyon road. The B58/8HP combo, is simply much better.

I just traded in my M2 Competition for a 2023 RS3 two weeks ago. I've only put a couple hundred miles on it so far, but I have a couple corners I like to take fast. And the first time I took the RS3 through one of them, I did it faster than I ever did with my M2 and it felt planted firmly the whole time.
Totally subjective, but it impressed me. I wasn't really expecting it to handle as well as the M2.

As the Supra used in the comparison is tuned, I wonder how much perceived better throttle response and shift points were due to tuning. I have a Stage 1+ RS3 (both ECU and TCU tuning with all bolt ons but downpipe) and that transforms the throttle response and shift points. The turbo lag is also lessened. I would imagine this skewed the “feel” for the Supra, considering how the same kind of tuning transformed my RS3.
Another key thing to note: RS3 also sees 500-515 whp with E85, similar to the Supra.
The biggest thing going for the Supra is the weight and two door, two seater chasis. This really makes the tuned 380hp feel faster and better put to the ground.

But definitely looking forward to the review of your build process. I've had a BMW 340 MPPSK with a stage 2 tune and of course my rs3 which was stage 2 then and the rs3 was quicker. Stock to stock I believe my rs3 was quicker, possibly the supra being lighter might be quicker? But these are 2 fantastic engines the B58 and the Audi 5 cylinder.. Great review tho!

The RS3 would make it through the snow here in Michigan that a BMW would be stuck or a roadside ornament in. Plus the RS3 is a better-looking vehicle in my opinion. Same for the comparison with the Supra. The Supra is too cramped to be used as a daily driver. If you can afford and want a summer-only car, get a BMW or Supra. You’re nit picking at the Supra a lot which should already give you your answer… clearly you want an RS3. But personally if I had to choose a car and I wanted a 4 door AWD vehicle the M340i xDrive exist. I have an M240i and the B58 in the M340i is the exact same as the Supra, the only difference is weight, the new RS3 is 3700lbs and M340i is 3900lbs… you’re not losing much at 200lbs, and remember the M340i is RWD based vs the RS3’s FWD base so it already feels better around corners. That will go up in value. I’ve had three BMW’s. They depreciate fast. The M340i xDrive is on my list. But the Supra is more appealing delisted AWD and 4 doors. Finally.. I do want a stick again. I don't follow. The RS3 has always been a 4 door. The departed TTRS is the only way to get this engine with 2 doors.

Don't trust the B58 motor (known for oil consumption) and Supra looks fugly. Went RS3...may not be as good on a roadcourse but better street car imo and easy to tune
