I’m way overdue for an update, sorry about that. I’ve been swamped with stuff to do and have a few videos I need to edit and put out. This is the first of them.

Why did Pontiac go to so much trouble? Couldn’t they have designed a crossflow head for the chevy inline 6?
lookin good love that color combo
Thanks!
Wow , very nice . Trans am steering wheel , trans am splitter exhaust , holley , gto dual gate ....
Kittys , here we come !!
Yeah one of these days! I guess I could always push it across the street if I had to 👍
That's cool !!!! especially the history,thanks for sharing it.👍
Thanks for watching!
@@olzkng your welcome,I look forward to watching more videos on thie Camaro
sounds great!
I learned how to do a compression test on one
OMG when I was a kid my parents had a I believe 78 or 79 notch back sunbird with a four-speed that car was incredibly fast especially when you consider the smog era that car was lightweight and that V6 and believe it was the Buick 285 or two something dead was incredibly fast for what it was
I’m a sunbird fan and owner like what you have done with yours
Thanks! I appreciate it 👍
Looks great, sounds great. I've only encountered one and it was a single barrel carb version in a 66 Tempest
Thank you!
Good job!!
Thank you!
Definitely too far out on the tire.
Oh well. Best I can do.
Ah, the old “How many telephone poles” stomping grounds. You did set the bar high.
Yeah, the simple days when success was measured by a burn out 10 telephone poles long! Life was simpler back then. This time around I was just trying to see how quick and hard it would shift at full throttle. It does pretty well 👍
Who did that snot of a weld on the exhaust?
I'll never tell Matt!
Very helpful! Thank you!!
You’re welcome, glad it helped! Thanks for watching!
This video is now 7yrs old and absolutely saved my butt today!! YOU SIR are a legend!!! Thank you.
Happy it helped! Thanks for watching the video and best of luck with your car 👍
It's kinda funny that the shortblock in this video and the shortblock in my 71 C10 are identical. In theory there's nothing stopping me from tracking down one of these heads and all the support parts to go with, bolting it onto my shortblock, and in effect creating a 71 C10 Tempest even though they were never originally sold that way.
Red Baron motor
Hoping those don't negatively affect your 60 foot times with the increased mass and stiffening the sidewalls!😁
Look good!!! What are the full dimensions of your rims and tires?
Thank you! The tires are BF Goodrich Comp TA G force and are 245/45-17 in the front and 275/40-17. In the rear The rims are 17 x 8” in the front and 17 x 9“ in the rear. The front tires are about 26” tall and 9” wide and the rears are 27” tall and 11” wide
Hot stuff
Thanks buddy!
The mighty OHC 6!
Beautiful car
Thank you! And thanks for watching
-89 is the same as 90. - In the old design, the easiest way I found to remove the timing belt is to undo the camshaft bolt and slide the wheel out along with the belt. Installation is the same. Real easy to move the timing one tooth this way as well. Rather than having to loosen the water pump and leak coolant everywhere and maybe ruin the gasket. With the balancer on the later design, perhaps its easier to just make a mark where the tensioner bolt is and then loosen that.
I just purchased a used dual gate from eBay . I have no idea what kind of car it is out of. I only know the his side is sloppy there is no detent left in the gear selection . . There must be some way to adjust the detents. I see a spring loaded mechanism on the side of the his. Side. Wish me luck
There's a place online you can buy some of the parts you'll need to rebuild a Dual Gate; www.shifterdoc.com/productcart/pc/HURST-Dual-Gate-and-Dual-Gate-2-Shifter-Master-Rebuild-Kit-His-Hers-p1748.htm There used to a be a guy named Mike Seidlik who reproduced some of the main parts (Mike's 442.com) but he seems to have dropped off the face of the earth. I believe The Parts Place has some of the parts to rebuild these shifters too or you could hunt on ebay. Good luck!
Excelente tutorial usted podrá facilitarme el número de pieza para el pistón de la caja th125
I have a 69 442 with th400......i have been looking for about a year for parts or shifter on forums and ebay...no luck. You have any 69 dual gates laying around in your collection? How do you feel of making another identical Dual gate for a 69 442 with th400? 😊 i really want to go with the Dual Gate
I don’t have a 69 Dual Gate on hand, sorry. A friend of mine had one for sale a couple of months ago so I messaged him this morning but he already sold it. Do you have to have the 68 and 69 H/O style with the curved handle or can use the Pontiac style with the straight stick? They’re functionally the same except for the shape of the stick. Do you belong to any of the Oldsmobile groups on Facebook? If you don’t I would join the Oldspower group, the Hurst Olds group, the Olds buy, sell and trade group, etc. Those shifters pop up once in a while and usually go for around $500. The Pontiac version is much easier to find and usually around $350 or so for a nice one. Have you checked with The Parts Place? I’m pretty sure they bought the rights to the Hurst Dual Gate and they reproduce a bunch of them with cables and brackets etc. They might have exactly what you need. Since the 68-69 Hurst Olds came with a Dual Gate and a Turbo 400 it should be easy to swap into your car. They didn’t use the console you have though, they used a much smaller console which is reproduced today. If you want to keep your original console you’ll have to modify it to work like I did. Still, it shouldn’t be too tough. Good luck with it!
Hi again, so I lucked out and got a hurst dual gate....it's not an olds....looks like a 68 or 69 Pontiac GTO shifter. I also got the neutral.safty switch that is mounted on the shifter...the top plate and the cable with transmission bracket....along with a spare 69olds console top shifter plate from the same seller. It should be here by Friday. Do you mind if I get your Instagram or email so ifni questions I can contact you??? Thanks Am
@@amrikjaswal76 you can email me at olzkng@aol.com. If you have a question I can answer I’m happy to help. I never put a dual gate into my 442 with a turbo 400 so I’m not sure how much I can help but I’ll do what I can. Sounds like you bought pretty much everything you’ll need for the conversion 👍
Thats a custom dash no? I own a non turbo Sunbird and and it has a completely different dash.
The dash and gauges are stock for my car. The panel to the left of the dash gauges is something I made out of aluminum. The Sunbird GT had a standard gauge cluster that you could order on non-GT Sunbirds. The Sunbird GT gauge cluster was later used in the GMC Syclone and Typhoon believe it or not. Thanks for watching!
Somebody help I have an 88 sunbird 70k miles I’m trying to put it on marketplace but idk if I should put it up for 15k 10k or 5k
It depends on a lot of things. Is it a turbo Sunbird? They're worth more than a non-turbo model. Is it a standard transmission or automatic? Standard transmission models are less common so they usually command more money than an automatic. How many miles are on it? What kind of shape is it in? If it's low miles, a Turbo with manual transmission and looks like a 2 year old car it might be worth $10,00 to someone. Unfortunately these cars don't pull a lot of money. A guy had a beautiful turbo automatic convertible GT for sale last year and I think he got $6000 for it. That seems to be all the money for them right now from what I've seen.
@@olzkng yea bro so it’s an 88 sunbird Turbo Gt Coupe. Manual. 70k miles on it. I’ve been looking everywhere online and I can only find the convertible version same year for sale. It goes from 7-15K. But the thing is if my car is rare and you can’t find it anywhere I wanna get the most I possibly can out of it. Please someone help
Are you a member of the Sunbird GT turbo Facebook page? That would probably be good place to post about it or advertise it. Either that or www.J-body.org web forum might be a good place to try to sell it also.
Have you got an email i can contact you on? Thnx Bob.
If it’s to tell me I’m a moron just do it here 😊. If it’s for advice it’s olzkng@aol.com
Any advice, i have a beautiful inline that was original to the car, but also have a v8 that id love to put in it....
It depends what you want from your car. If you just want a classic, great looking old car and you’re not really into rapid acceleration or burning rubber the 6 cylinder is probably fine. If you’d like to do a burnout here and there or love the bottom end torque and sound of a V8 that would be the way to go. My overhead cam 6 is smooth and quiet and runs like a Swiss watch. It doesn’t have a ton of bottom end torque but once you get off the line it moves along fine. A V8 has tremendous bottom end power and can rip the tires loose most anytime you want. Having had a V-8 in my car before I put the OHC 6 in it I can tell you the OHC 6 always causes people to stop and look at it at a car show. With the V8, they’d look at it for a minute or two and walk away. If that’s important to you that might help you make your decision too. Thanks for watching my video!
Well done.
Thank you!
Thank you for watching!
Very clever 👏 it's very good information.
Cool stuff! Are the tips of those needle nose hardened now also?
Yes they are! Like they spent a night at the Golden Banana!
All you did was get new axles ?
Yes, I had Moser make me a pair of axles. I put new bearings on the axles before they went in so the bearings and the axles were both brand new and slid right in. It took care of the problem. They usually get bent by either a huge pothole or from hitting a curb and bending the outboard section of the axle shaft or flange.
@@olzkng okay perfect I’m having the same problem in my rear passenger side I’m pretty sure that’s what it is would you have to get both new axles or just one
You can put in one used axle if you want. If t’s a common rear end they may be easy to find. My rear axles are Olds 12 bolt 31 spline which they only made for 2 years I believe so you very rarely see them for sale. An axle manufacturer may only sell them in pairs if you try to buy them new.
@@olzkng okay thank you again for all this info
@@Playboyjuany no problem, happy to help
Your old flex plate is junk!
Good to know but I too have several motors laying around.
You’re a smart man! Thanks for watching my video 👍
GM was WAY ahead of their time with this engine. Why was it dropped? Just think if they had produced cam heads for the SBC.
Thanks for sharing.
I have a 1985 5 speed coupe given to me the other day. Needs work, but I dig it
Should be a fun project! Post some videos of it as you work on it!
I just got one of these cars that was given to me. This mine is a five speed manual transmission. Are those reliable cars? And how are the manual transmissions?
If the head gasket has never been done you may have to do a head gasket at some point in its life. Otherwise, they’re pretty reliable cars. The five speed transmission is reliable as far as I know and very desirable. You should post up a video of your car!
What year is it
It’s a 1987
Hey I just did a head gasket on my 2L turbo I have the motor backfiring and the timing is out I think? Mechanical workings work well and sound good but I cannot get timing? Is there something you can recommend? I have replaced the ecm, gone thru and repaired the wiring harness all is new? I’m baffled The timing marks are to be set up at cam on tdc and crank at -10 btdc? I’m stumped and reaching out…..?
Can the injector wiring get mixed up?
The injector wiring position doesn't matter believe it or not. Just plug them in as they naturally fall near the injectors. I wonder if your harmonic balancer has slipped like mine did. Put number one piston at TDC and make sure your timing mark lines up at TDC like it should. Mine was off by about 20 degrees so I had to get my balancer rebuilt. It sounds like you set it up correctly just make sure the outer ring of your balancer hasn't slipped.
Go-Go Buick V6 Turbo!!
I rebuilt a 125 trans back in 1987 at the Chevy dealer, it was my first trans ever. I t my thougt it was easy 😊
I agree. They’re pretty easy 👍
What blades are you using? The manual says don’t use .025 thick blades. It’s supposed to use .020 blades, but I’m having trouble finding them.
I’m using a #4125A279 blade from McMaster-Carr. It’s .025” thick but like you, I couldn’t find a .020” blade. Seems to work fine for me.
@@olzkng thanks. I’m going to one a try.
You don't have to fill the wells under the pick-up coil with grease or use a felt washer on an Oldsmobile like a Chevy?
Mine did not have a felt washer in it but they often do, you’re right about that. There’s usually a clear plastic washer over the wells to keep the grease in the pockets though
I can hear it going Bang-Screach already!
God I hope so!
Hey have was wondering what ur doing with the 2.0 L turbo I've been reading and learning but from what I've learned that the original motor mounts only mount up to the 3.1 and 3.6 with out any fabrication however that do make a kit and it's possible to mount the 3.6 jeep in mind I just bought my sun bird about a week ago
I rebuilt the 2.0 and have been driving it this summer. I've never swapped anything into one of these cars I've just pulled out the original engine for a rebuild. I have no experience in what's involved with swapping in something else, unfortunately. Thinking about the SC 3800 I trial fit and hearing people tell me they swapped one in and it fit I was wondering why it was too tight a fit in my car. I'm thinking it's because I was using the 4T65E HD trans instead of a 125 or manual trans. That would have saved a bunch of space and it probably would have fit fine that way.
