    A random greybeard feels the need to expand on your "back then" observation -- yeah, sizes were limited. Mostly the size of the assembled image, not the size of the source file, so removing two instructions (two lines of code) and adding six lines of comments would be a net win. To calibrate how small was small: my KIM-1 in 1978 had a kilobyte of memory; and in 1979, I used Intel 2716 eproms, which stored 2 kilobytes of data, were re-usable, and were cheap. How we reprogram the IC10 chips is a pretty good match for how people handled the 2716 and its cousins. It's tempting to do my IC10 development outside the game, and set up to automatically convert my editable source into minimal files for Stationeer (removing comments and blank lines, checking that it's not too long, then dumping it into the clipboard). One thing the Stationeer limitation will encourage is to build more complex systems using multiple housings, where each housing runs a program that does one simple part. We have the ability to communicate between them. Just have to carve the big job into essentally a collection of simple coroutines. Not sure how the farming might be divided into coroutines, aside from being able to lift Grow Light and Import Bin management out of the way, but I do see that such a tight memory limit will encourage that kind of thinking.

    Hey dude, I really like your scripts. Can you tell me where to find them? Specifically I LOVED your vulcan script that identified the types of gas containers in the filler. I may be lazy, but it would be ideal to have a repository (either steam workshop or somewhere else) for some of your good stuff. I, personally, am not strong at MIPS so it's nice to see how you handle solutions. Thank you for the solid videos! Quick edit: even a github would be good. <3

    Some food for thought... You spoke of backup power generation possibly masking issues with main power generation, and well, there are means to thwarting such problems, such as a suitable application of more logic. For example, the establishment of a monitoring, and/or notification center (preferably in a commonly traveled area), in which you can feed all pertinent data to so you can monitor your atmospherics, gas supplies, gas generation and consumption, power generation and consumption, water generation and consumption, etc. with color changing LEDs to notify statuses, flashing lights to grab your attention to critical issues, and of course, some nice console graphs to display generation versus consumption. Cheers!

    Is there some easy way of telling the various printers to make x amount and then stop? Having to babysit cable and plate manufacturing is tedious.

    • @VenusianGamer
      @VenusianGamer Před 8 dny

      One method is to only provide the materials required to make the specific amount you need. Using a standalone stacker to break up ingots to the correct amount. If only printing one item, hit the arrow on the printer to select another item and when the current item finishes, it will stop. Scripting can also be used to control the printers, but that would fall outside of easy (well, I guess it would be easy once all setup...) For example, this is why I break up my steel into 50 unit ingots so I can make a specific number of steel items without using all my steel if I forgot about the printer.

    • @HotblackDesiat042
      @HotblackDesiat042 Před 6 dny

      As he said, it depends on what you consider easy. For a relatively easy logic implementation I'd recommend using the setting dial on a stacker off the printer to indicate the quantity you want the printer to produce. Then all you have to do is track the stacker's import counter until it equals the setting, then deactivate the printer and reset the import counter. For example: alias printer d0 alias stacker d1 s stacker ClearMemory 1 #Initializing the stacker's import counter by resetting it to zero. start: yield l r0 stacker Setting #Loads into r0 the stacker's dial setting. l r1 stacker ImportCount #Loads into r1 the stacker's import count. sne r0 r0 r1 #Set r0 true (1) if r0 does not equal r1, otherwise false (0). brgtz r0 3 #Branch ahead relative 3 lines if r0 is greater than 0. s printer Activate 0 #Deactivate printer. s stacker ClearMemory 1 #Clear stacker import counter. j start In the above program you will note that once the stacker's import counter equals its setting value the program will no longer skip passed the command lines to deactivate the printer and clear the stacker's import counter. I also created a logic chip variation that essentially performs the same logic for someone who was a bit timid with programing IC10s, which is as follows: Requires 5 Kit Logic I/O and 2 Kit Logic Processors. Logic Reader Stacker Setting: Stacker(in) - Setting(var) Logic Reader Stacker Counter: Stacker(in) - ImportCount(var) Logic Compare: Logic Reader Stacker Setting(1) - Equals(out) - Logic Reader Stacker Counter(2) Logic Reader Printer Activate: Printer(in) - Activate(var) Logic Gate: XOR(select) - Logic Compare(1) - Logic Reader Printer Activate(2) Logic Writer Printer Activate: Logic Gate(in) - Out(printer) - Activate(var) Logic Writer Counter Reset: Logic Compare(in) - Out(stacker) - ClearMemory(var) (Note that with this method you'll have manually reset the stacker's import counter first (e.g. drilling and replacing the stacker, or writing a true to it's ClearMemory data port.)) Cheers!

      The key is to just keep at it, writing new code and going back over the documentation (IC10 wiki), write some more code, back to the docs, and repeat. If new to assembler languages, watching a MIPS programming video may be helpful (but note, IC10 is based on MIPS, but also very different). My Moon/Vulcan series have code embedded (generally far smaller than this video) in the descriptions when I program things...

    FYI: Much like the card for your sensor lenses which provides x-ray vision highlighting ores, there is another card which provides x-ray vision highlighting all of your pipe and cable networks. While it may take a bit of acclimatization towards getting used to this feature, I'd highly recommend it. It can be greatly beneficial not only when tidying up cable and pipe networks, but also when laying out new networks as I've noticed you have a bit of a bad habit (no offense intended) of automatically equipping the wrench or cable cutters when placing new pipes or cables especially along wall edges and corners. Many old school players have learned the hard lessons of the lurking potential catastrophes in accidentally splicing into unseen existing networks. So some of us have employed the good-practice habit of not equipping a tool until it was absolutely necessary. But the somewhat recent addition of the expanded sensor lens use with network vision has remedied such problems quite effectively. Cheers!

    Are you planning to use charcoal filtration or evaporation to purify shower water? Heating up polluted water with a small heat exchanger and outputting via evaporation valve to your water combustion cooling system is an essentially free and permanent solution, but that area is already crowded enough with pipes. On the other hand, charcoal needs new machines to get going, but the piping is easier and demand is low enough that a quick-and-easy solution might be better. On my next Vulcan run I'm planning to go the water boiling method myself. If I'm going to set up a water combustor rather than trading for bulk water, then an extra few devices to also have the system boil and reclaim polluted water is worth it and will let me use the hardsuit more freely.

    • @VenusianGamer
      @VenusianGamer Před 12 dny

      Given I rarely need to wear a suit at this point, shower is not required and didn't plan on setting it up now. I haven't mucked with polluted water and didn't realize could boil off the water to separate from the pollutants. Went a bit overboard with the trading this series. In the future, I will restrict myself to buying seeds only (and sell anything to make credits for seeds).

  • @QuiranPup
    @QuiranPup Před 18 dny

    Is there a specific reason you're not comparing the sterling output temperature with outside temperature and have the base open the doors when the outside temperature is lower?

    • @VenusianGamer
      @VenusianGamer Před 17 dny

      The problem with my design is I'm cooling the Stirling generator 'and' H20 in the same cooling room. If the H20 is at 200C, the Stirling at 600C, and outside is 500C, I don't want the doors to open and heat the H20 up. The the doors only open if "night" (or temp <= 127C) or the outside temp is cooler than the liquid (H2O) pipes. The other reason is to hit max Stirling efficiency, the gas outside of the Stirling should be as cool as possible, thus night only running. So even if the doors are open with outside at 300C, Stirling internals at 800C, it still shouldn't run until night (127C) for efficiency. Note, this is all a new design and trying it out for the first time to see how it does. I reserved the right to make improvements. <g> <g> <g>

    • @QuiranPup
      @QuiranPup Před 17 dny

      @@VenusianGamer Ahh, that makes sense. You're choosing to cool the H2O at a slightly slower rate in favor of a higher power output from the Stirling engine. I cannot wait to see what improvements can be found for the system :D

  • @HotblackDesiat042
    @HotblackDesiat042 Před 18 dny

    Rather than enclose the solar panels in a greenhouse, why not just replace them with heavy panels which are impervious to the storms? Surely you can manage the astroloy and stellite construction requirements at this point. Cheers!

    • @VenusianGamer
      @VenusianGamer Před 17 dny

      Requires 15x Astroloy per heavy solar panel. Which is basically 15x cobalt each. To replace all 21, that would be 315 cobalt. Plus all the work for the other requirements. I rather keep the cobalt for other items. Besides, it would be a boring one or two episodes for all that work <g>. (If I had serious deep miners running with auto smelting, then it would be a different matter).

    IRL, plants respire water vapour during their 'sleep' cycle. I wonder if the game engine could allow you to harvest this if they introduced H2O vapour as a plant side-product?

    • @VenusianGamer
      @VenusianGamer Před 23 dny

      I've heard this before, but haven't seen it yet. In the Vulcan (pre-installing a drain from a older save) and in the current Moon series there is no water in the inside base gases when I just checked.

  • @HotblackDesiat042
    @HotblackDesiat042 Před 24 dny

    A passive vent to a condensation valve would probably be the preferred way of pulling the liquid water out of the atmosphere. Unless the devs reworked the drain inlet it's going to contaminate your water line with all the gasses in your atmosphere, because it drains a bit of everything, not just liquids. In other words, you've now probably got some N, O2, and CO2 gas in your water pipe. Also, I really like your idea of daisy chaining stirling engines together in series. I wonder why I didn't think of that when I suggested using the stirling engine; I guess that makes us even (LOL)! It won't be efficient for power generation, naturally, as each chained engine will suffer greatly from the law of diminishing returns, but the power generation is just a bonus as they're primarily being used for cooling. A fair bit of experimentation here could also determine how to get the best of both worlds, i.e. power gen and cooling. I look forward to seeing what you'll achieve! Cheers!

      Not really sure. My general rule is to put enough radiators outside that during the night the first stage chamber will cool down to around 132C. Finding coal during mining hasn't been an issue so far and once I get my sensor lens then its a piece of cake... (Delay sensor lens as finding stuff hasn't been an issue.)

    I made something like you did here and it works fine. I have a night-time medium fan sucking in 127c Vulcan night air. Some will go to a filtration to filter out CO2 into a tank and the rest is being condensed (pollutant is the only thing that condenses), which is stored in two inline tanks and then a purge valve to keep it all under 4000 kPa. This is all outside. The condensed pollutant is cooling the CO2 to around 55-60c. But the "cool" pollutant is also going inside and being purged into gas and then compressed again to liquify. The heat from the condensed liquid, which is on the gas, is then going into a heat-exchanger with the "original" pollutant as a liquid. Which then cool the gas a bit (it's usual around 70c). And it's also hooked up on a AC (coolant side). When I inject the 55-60c CO2 into the base, the AC will transfer the heat from that into the Pollutant gas in the 2nd stage, which then transfers it to the first stage, where it bleeds off during the night. Works like a charm.

      Good idea! For my Vulcan series, I switched over to a closed loop system with two stages that can reduce below 20C. But requires a bit of hardware and prep time to get running.

    Returning to here ... the idea of losing all my crops when opening access to the next part of the base keeps digging at me. I think maybe the smart move might be to temporarily seal up the hydroponics area with a few walls, so if you dump the air in the base, your plants are happy while you recover. ... Am I being paranoid? ;)

    • @VenusianGamer
      @VenusianGamer Před 29 dny

      Part of the excitement... To handle a mistake, wall off part of the base interior. Then using a large power vent to move all the gas in the area changing to a small tank. (So now the area to be changed is in a vacuum.) Now make any updates, including going wild ripping things out. Once the structure is back together then dump the save gas back into the space. For example, if/when I replace the old iron windows I will wall off the plants, pump all the gas into a tank, then make the change. Once done, just dump the gas back in. For the windows around the plants, possible to bring them to a vacuum for about 10 minutes before damage occur (in theory, haven't tried it yet), make the change and dump the gas back in.

    You’re making some cool builds with nice exposition but, Please, prioritize installation of bright overhead lights everywhere. The head lamp is charming for the first couple episodes of a series. But it’s fairly unpleasant long term: we get 320p of twitchy, head bobbing viewing area out of a 1080p stream. Similar request for your moon series.

    add a heavy wire transformer to the wire going outside...if you upgrade to extra solar or other modes of power in future. Question: is there a mod that gives random building error.. like a pipe loose electric wire not socketed properly or something not done the correct way.. when building a indoor system and laying the extrnal furnace outside on the moon surface.. i know there is a suggestion on steam for chos surface problem scheduled for future updates.. and Solar flare and random Meteor Showers on the moon is one of them. but is there a mod for that... mostly now its very peaceful and easy to build... i know you can choose before starting the game to option out what you can bring and not bring with you..but like not having a furnace or advance printer that don't work without 1 pre-programable chip with a few printing tool diagrams and some basic manuals welding/drilling/pressure.. and make it look more Admissible like the Aurdino EEPROM chip That can be electrically erased.......and not have the entirety of wikipedia on Any basic chip right out the advance printer... yeah i know its a game.

      My 10 solar units are right on the edge of standard cable and did print heavy cable in EP11, but havn't got around to upgrading them (but working just fine). Not aware of any random build error issue. For Vulcan/Venus, just place full O2 bottles around the outside of the base at random and wait... <g> The Moon is the starter planet for learning about Stationeers with a reduced things to worry about. With easy survival, focus on base design and automation. For example, full automated generation of H20 with zero mining is still a bit of work to get running. Didn't follow your last few statements, but you can add your own soft limitations. For example, I would do the old Venus without using the Solid Generator to make it more difficult. (But the game is a bit different now...)

    Future Improvements (so far): 1. Check that the robot arm is empty after dropping item in import bin, if not then signal alarm, sleep, and retry. 2. If on a "first pick", nothing is acquired, signal alarm. 3. If on a "first pick", if not a seed, sleep for 1 minute and continue. (will permit reducing trays to speed up operation)

      Yep, I believe I did comment that a stacker could be used with the output. The assumption is the output will be used as input for some automated process, so the use of the stacker may not be required.

      To make it faster without too much work, just reduce the number of trays. Then add some logic to slow down a little if first picks are not seeds. And/or just replicate the entire setup. Imagine ten running in parallel <g>.

    I expect this starts again at zero whenever you reload the game or tweak the code? Maybe an external memory chip would help it remember where to resume?

    • @VenusianGamer
      @VenusianGamer Před měsícem

      If the code is updated, then could manually update the two lines in the "initialize:" section with hard coded number. Smart restarting is difficult as it needs to know if in a first pick or next pick state, or in the middle of dropping something off in the import bin. It would be possible to put all that state in memory (shifting bits around), but would increase code complexity and difficult to test.
