    If you listen carefully, you can hear the pressure sound of the gas filling in when the intake valve opens, and then the sound of the exhaust valve opening.

    There are 2 much larger cylinder engines. They are Humphrey Pumps located at Cobdoglah in South Australia. They have bores of over 1 Meter and were used to pump water but are now on display.

    Narration is very good. The half wits that just want to hear it go pop pop pop (chug chug chug) would be happy watching a lawn mower. If you don’t want to hear the technical details just skip ahead. Only suggestion is the camera could have focused in to the engine details a bit more. By-the-way… additionally… the narrator is filling time while the technicians work on getting up and running.

    Check out Henry Ford about his nine single cylinder engines. This machine, 82 feet long, 46 feet wide, and weighing 750 tons, is one of nine that powered the Ford Motor Company's Highland Park plant while Model Ts were being manufactured there. Together, the nine machines generated 53,000 horsepower.

    There used to be some very big engines in the Ogema Hills near West Branch Michigan. They ran something related to the oil wells in the hills. I was 20 and climbed all over them so I believe they were bigger and they were spark ignition. It seems like they were Green and said AJAX on them. That was 50 yrs ago. ben/ michigan

    Hmm not the largest in the world, only have to look at Kew's 90 inch and 100 inch single cylinder Cornish beams where the beam itself prob weighs more than that whole engine does and the cylinder itself housing the piston on either is much bigger than the whole engine.

    I did a little online research and quickly came to a dead end. I had to go check Crossley engines. The engine I thought of immediately turned out to be two cylinder horizontal with open crankcase, so it’s not a contender for biggest single cylinder, but with con rods 10 feet long and a estimated weight of 30 tons it’s a beast. Built in 1907. I cannot find what fuel it used, so I’m not even certain it’s a diesel. Last known to be in Argentina 15 years ago.

    • @aaronwilcox6417
      @aaronwilcox6417 Před 9 měsíci

      Yes. Old mines used engines like this for mine hoists and compressors to create air pressure for drills. They also used air driven muckers and track equipment to transport rock.

    • @MJD-AntiqueEngineering
      @MJD-AntiqueEngineering Před 9 měsíci

      @thomas7529 They were used primarily for pumping natural gas along pipelines. At the far end of the engine is a compressor head, within which a double-acting piston pressurizes inflowing gas to 450 PSI and sends it down the pipeline to the next pump station. It was not uncommon to see 6-12 engines like this aligned in a row in those stations. The natural gas was also the engine's fuel source!
