Your videos and shorts are all very good. You do excellent work!
@chiptenor I appreciate that, thank you! 🙏😊
Chris is so motivational all his art just pops and comes with a different type of energy. Had to look up who did all the men apocalypse books I grew up on! I'm getting back into drawing and he's def a artist I look up too
Very good fantástic 👍
@@jesuscarmelorodriguezlem-id2vu Thank you 😊
Oh wow, you actually convinced me to try out a brush, and see how it goes, though im still terrified of mistakes, compared to doing it digitally
@DarkTider It takes some time to get used to, but the results are worth it in my opinion. Enjoy and let me know how it goes!
Not bad
Fantastic❤❤❤❤❤
Definitely looking forward to watching the full video of this!

Beautiful work. Very inspiring video, Thomas. Thanks for presenting this!
@@dancingdog60 I'm glad you liked it 😊 Thanks for watching!
Great comprehensive inking video tom!! 👍👍
@@bgaston14 Thanks Ben!
Instead of a maru pen + fountain pen, why not a Gpen from the beginning ? You would have thin/ thick lines variations.
That's just what I had on hand. Plus, it's something different that forces me to think a little differently about my approach. I gotta get some G nibs soon though!
dude's a legend
Same inking can be done with the pen but it would just take more time.
you are amazing teacher , besides being an awesome artists :)
@MatoCreates That's very kind of you to say, thank you so much 🙏🙏
the longer my lines need to be the more sporadic my line weight tends to get, so the nikko mapping pen is good to counteract that for me.
Neat tip about the smudging tool. John Paul Leon was another amazing Toth-influenced artist who did amazing spotting blacks. I saw his “magnum opus” Winter Men, was turned into a limited artists edition. Would love to see that book in person, bet its gorgeous. Great video and cool commission!
Thank you! I would also love to see that artist's edition, I bet it's incredibly insightful!
Very informative, thank you.
Thank you for your Amazing Video Thomas can you make one of your thoughts about coloring in images or how which colors work better together again thank you 🎨🖌️
@blueoceans6459 Thank you for watching! I've been meaning to make a video about coloring. I'm far from an expert at colors haha, it's a real struggle for me, so I'm not sure how much advice there will be 🤣
Wow, that was great: ) So cool to see the close-ups of you inking, and esp. getting the super tactile feel. That scratching sound was oddly meditative too. Ha ha. What was really cool to see was how much you made the nib-inked version pop by just a few accents w/the fude pen! That was like a magic trick. What exactly are you thinking about when you make those kind of choices, to make an accent here rather than there, and then BAM, it's done? That was fantastic. It made me love that version the most. The variety of textures was so subtle that it made the drawing seem suddenly alive.
Thanks so much! I'm glad you enjoyed the video and that's a great question about the Fude pen accents. I used them where I thought I could best suggest some sense of a slight shadow, just for a bit of contrast. So, if you notice, those lines are on one side one side of her, and the rest are little corners and nooks where shadow might be. Not over thought out, but sort of instinctual. Hope that helps 👍
@@thomaspitilli That's awesome! I would definitely like to move toward that instinctual capability. Ha ha. So this is a kind line weight/light source thing? Maybe I just need way more work on those fundamentals to be able to "see" your logic when you hit those accents. I def. tend to overthink that kind of stuff and end up w/a mess.
@badicecream2913 Perhaps I'll make a video on it some time...
@@thomaspitilli Yeah! That would be amazing! Your takes on inking are really outstanding, so the more of them the better: ) Thanks again!
Thanks, Thomas. This is arriving to me at just the right time in my artistic growth process. Your explanation of each process is helping me be clearer about what my tasks are at each step of making a comic.
That's so great to hear! I'm glad this comes at the right time for you :) Good luck with your continued learning and let me know of there are any other topics or issues you'd like me to address 👍

I have no trouble spotting blacks…
In my case, time is a problem. I work sanding all day and when I get home, I don't have too much time to draw. Getting the final pencils fast is always a problem. I had to educate myself to sketch first, specially now that I'm doing pencils for my next book. It's frustrating erasing more than drawing but I understand your point and agree. Great video. See you on the next one. 🤘
For me, working digitally is incredibly freeing. Working on layers, scaling and erasing is so easy I can quickly experiment with compositions before getting into the details.
I'm doing my graphic novel in B&W, because a huge part of why I got interested in making comics was B&W underground comics from the 80s, up to and including the original Mirage TMNT comics. Yet after all these years I'm still hesitant to fully commit to giant spot-black areas, so crosshatching/feathering/black-spotting is still used very sparingly in my stuff. I've had people compare my stuff to Moebius and Geof Darrow (the highest compliments I've ever received) but I still want to get bolder with my black spotting. Frankly since I work digitally I have no excuse not to experiment, and this video has given me a bit of a push to try getting bolder with it.
@@ShinGallon Glad to be that push! I hope this helps take your work to that next level!
For me best black and white comic artist is alberto brechia
I really agree with him. Ive drew alot of my manga with no coloring but it still looks alright without the coloring😅😊
Very good interesing.👍👍👍

Spotting blacks has been my major gripe because I want to make my art pop out more. Thank God for this video!

@@bgaston14 Thanks so much, Ben!

@@smartkitville7167 That's a very flattering compliment, thank you! 🙏
@@thomaspitilli I love your art! congratulations!
Very helpful. Thank you for this, really gives me a strong retrospect into how comic artists would use darkness, shadow and light to create strong effects for depth and light of their fabric or clothes. I also love Alex Toth, Frank Millers Sin City, Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece, Yuichi Kumakura’s Jing King Of Bandits manga series And Matt Lesniewski of Faceless And The Family. Also how do I know how much shading to put on their face, I feel it’s good to have some shading but also believe that it becomes to tedious to focus on so much shadowing on their face.
Hey, you made a short out of that one point I found very useful in your video. Sweet! Hope others find it as eye-opening as I did. It was an incredibly helpful observation.
@@J3ss4u I had to make it into a clip! 🤣 I'm glad you found it helpful, I hope others do as well :)
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” - John 3:16 God bless everyone here. Jesus loves you and died for you on the cross. He did this to wash away the burden of sins, and if you open your heart to Him, He can take away the burden of your sins and give you a peace incomparable to anything in this world. ✝✝🙏
Great video. Thanks. Can I ask who is buying pictures of Peggy Carter though?
@muttdiggedy Lots of people. She's a pretty popular commission requests. Surprised me too.
What brand / model of Pen were you using for the black shading?
@@scottmulder8726 I used a variety of different brush pens. Check out my linktree in my bio and click on the Shop tab for all of the exact supplies I use 👍
Wow, I was looking into that Sailor 55angled fountain pen the other day they have aslo another that is at 44 angle. I got into ink 2 years ago. Before that I was painting with color, oil/acrylic mostly commission work always. Started with Mangaka nibs (Gpem, Maru, Saiji, school, map, also lettering), I thought this is the BEST thing for inking. No not for me. my hands hurt due hard pressing i rarely use them now. Tried the Pentel Pocket the tip is way too soft and very hard to control imo (gave it to gf). Recommendations to all. I have 2 ink penbrushes from Pentel that I like more XFL2L(medium) and XFP5F(fine) I love them both. Also come with a learning curve. I use real brushes also sometimes it's much easier to use brushes with ink. For finer and more detailed work if you are trying to get that brush stroke I use and recommend Sakura BrushPen really excellent brush tip that bends like a real quality brush, . For super, tiny details Sakura Pigma FB & Uni Pen FineLine Brush for me these 2 feel exactly same in quality and feel Uni Pen is slightly thicker and costs less both feel like markers that bend. Extra extra tiny details Tombow Fudensoke Brush pen this is like 0.1 tip very tiny (not waterproof). UniPen surprised me with quality, its same as more expensive Kuretake, Sakura, Tombow and Pentel. I want to get more fountain pens because they give me the best feel when drawing. Also sturdy, iridium tips, many different colors and rechargeable (ink cartridges are easy to replace, refill & with some nibs you can use acrylic ink. I even saw Fountain Pen with G-Nib).I recharged that Pentel Pocket for gf, many times so far, used Sumi Ink with a bit of water, also Indian Ink(waterproof).
