Wooden Ships Comments on this Gaff Cutter Golden Vanity
Built in 1908 by Sanders and Co, Galmpton on the River Dart. The design was known as the Mumble Bee class of Brixham Sailing Trawler but unlike many of her sisters who went to sea as fishing vessels, she was launched as a yacht for the marine artist Arthur Briscoe who used her as a floating studio, recording working lives at sea in the early 20th century. Briscoe had a very recognisable style in his art work, his pictures providing a snap shot of life at sea for men on the sailing trawlers and other working vessels.
Through the 1970's her then owner sailed her across the Atlantic a number of times, including taking part in the 1972 OSTAR single handed trans-Atlantic ocean race.
In the early 1980's she underwent a major 5 year rebuild after being bought by the newly formed Golden Vanity Trust. She then worked as a youth sail training vessel taking part in several Tall Ships races, working as an RYA training boat and introducing all manner of young people to the work of traditional sailing.
Sold to the present owners in 2019 she has continued to be used as a commercial vessel providing sail training, holidays and adventure around the Solent, West Country and English Channel.
She underwent a very thorough refit in 2020/2021 as detailed below, her commercial licence was renewed to category 2 and she is now presented in very smart condition, fully equipped and ready to go as a commercial or private yacht.
Her length, coupled with her generous volume and space below decks mean she would make an excellent private yacht, providing a relatively easy to handle platform with lots of living space and separate berths.
She is listed on the National Historic Ships Register.
Length on Deck 39'
Length Overall 53'
Length Waterline 36'
Beam 12'2"
Draft 6'8"
Thames Tonnage 21TM

This ship has come into my harbour twice now and it’s still here. It’s amazing in person and I watched it leave the first time and watched it sail away. It’s truly an amazing looking ship ❤
Braken left his ball behind.
Wait. Does the captain of the Bessie Ellen not own it? Or is she the one who bought the Bessie Ellen? This is before the Stern bulwarks were painted pink. Did Venturesail buy the boat?
Whatever you're asking pricewise, isn't enough
Absolutely one of the most beautiful boats I've ever seen. It's a shame that some marinas don't allow wooden boats.
Why ?
@@bernardmullan9186 Insurance reasons. Sort of how some campgrounds don't allow RVs older than ten years old.
lovely tour, thanks for sharing. would not want to be below deck during a storm though...
I’d Love to take her across the Atlantic!
Another money pit. Sooner or later they all end up at the bottom.
Her name is "Iris Mary" - CK105. 44' long, built in 1912. Wonderfully rebuilt by a shipwright owner.
Interesting vessel. I do think it's a bit of a stretch to say she's been "exceptionally well cared for..". Significant wood refinishing is needed. Ill-fitting storage doors/ cabinetry. Rust on multiple fittings. Water stains on forward cabin headliner - that is significant because where else has the water leaked into? The bilge has standing water. The hot water tank has evidence of leaking. While she may be mechanically sound, she should be emptied out of personal belongings and deep cleaned to get a better idea of condition. One can spruce up a property for showing, but a vessel, especially a 60+ year old one takes much more effort to realize asking price.
I love so much about this boat, but the cockpit. I can't figure that out. I guess you just stand in the bucket while at the helm?
Nice to see tidy cordage Pity about the wind noise But still a super ship
Impressive ! The force 10 is gimbaled fore and aft !?!?
I used to live directly across from Silvers boatyard (yes, it’s still going but not full builds). I have had many a wander through the boatyard on a nice evening where there was always something interesting to see. A shame to see this once beautiful boat in such a terrible condition.
Groovy....
Pink? Well made but it's too intense; darkish green or similar gives rest for the eyes after a hard day's sailing. Not sure about the nav. placement. Good storage which reduces the clutter. (A wooden boat launched in the NHemis. some months ago now looks like the town tip; the sense of large space is immediately reduced when the shelves have jars and tins of chutney etc etc decorating the walls..)
Not much left of the origonal ,guarantee that 😊
Groovy little sailboat
What a beautiful boat. Not one of the "don't touch" museum pieces. Dreadful music though...
Not exactly built for comfort - very much an ex-working boat - which will require a massive investment in time and money to convert to that of a traditional sailing vessel.
Ketch has 2 masts ?
A rather large boat wouldn't you say.!!!!!
Lovely ship
Wow! What a beauty. Fair winds..
Komt uit een tijd, waar de tijd genomen werd om iets te maken. Kwaliteit in ontwerp en afwerking. Geeft deze boot karakter. Alleen die schijtdoos?😂 Mooie koperen emmer.😅
Wow! This was my father’s old boat in late 80’s/90’s. Lots of happy memories sailing on Nell, but where has the Mizzenmast gone!? Looks odd without it!
So a Pilot Cutter and not a Gaff Ketch?
Красивое
VERY VERY NICE .🇦🇷🙂
It is not a ketch. it is a Kutter😮 sailors grupo.. from Malvinas Ailands 🇦🇷
Sailed on Nell from Mylor to Kinsale, Ireland in the mid 70’s. Belonged to Chas and Sue at the time.
Nice boat but the cockpitt uncomfortable for my us.and to small.
What a beauty, I would take it if I was very wealthy because of takes a lot expensive work to keep it in good condition.
Fabulous..and so smart of you to offer witg only fine lens work minus dialog..no words could of matched
Che bello! Grazie mille!
In my 60 odd years as an English speaker and being in the antique trade, also a boat builder and boat owner, I've used and heard others use the word patina 1000's of times, yet I've never heard anyone say patina like you do. I think you'll find common consensus and dictionary explanation of correct pronunciation is pateena, not pat i na
Prettiest thing I ever did see!
The grain in the deck planks looks like pine, not teak.
Good luck finding someone with the heart, the knowledge, and the bankroll to maintain this beautiful antique.
She's a beauty❤ -id help the byer with 3 weeks of whatever the annual maintenance is needed if i could get a week of actuall sailing on that thing😊
I'm in love with this boat!
Title error. Great boat.
Sorry about your cold, hope you’re better soon! Beautiful boat and well represented.Thank you for sharing.
I figured out what bits are but what are bobs. Are bobs bigger then bits? You said, “bits and bobs”.
Beautiful! Full headroom without a raised cabin top. That's a big, spacious old boat!
Beautiful boat. Three heads. Wow!
Don't like the layout, but absolutely beautiful S.V...
Excellent video! I love wooden boats, having built a 37 cutter in the seventies and a 42' ketch in the eighties. Nell is rather spectacular, and whomever did the rebuild deserves a medal. Thanks for sharing!
WOW! Thanks for sharing.
